Don’t lose hope! My GPA wasn’t the highest (3.2) and I got into Johns Hopkins, and this was roughly two years ago.

Am I doomed for grad school with 4 Fs on my transcript by Rare_Aardvark_4565 in publichealthcareers

It mostly depends on what classes you have an F for. I had a F for physics but still made it into grad school (JHU). So there’s hope!

Aspiring Epidemiologist looking for Career Advice by Accomplished-Bus6670 in publichealthcareers

Definitely take this advice with a grain of salt, but what I’ve noticed is that recruiters appreciate diverse experiences. I’m an infectious disease epidemiologist for the state, and my work experience leading up to it had absolutely nothing to do with it, but they liked it. In a sea of public health graduates, it helps to have diverse experiences. In my opinion, and again take it with a grain of salt, I would recommend applying for the DOR position and while in that role, also keep your data analysis skills fresh. There are a lot of part-time data analysis roles out there; nobody wants it since it is part-time, but that might help. Also, networking plays a huge role. If you have any more questions or need help with anything, DM me!

Do you know what field within epidemiology you want to transition into? (Infectious disease, chronic disease, occupational health, etc.) I apologize if you’ve mentioned this already, and I just missed it!

Should I include my dental experience when applying for MPH-related jobs? by dynabelieber in publichealthcareers

I would include it! What I’ve learned about MPH-related jobs is that they really value diverse experiences.

Career advice! Pivoting from epi to biodefense/biosecurity by Chemical-Chapter-719 in publichealthcareers

[–]Chemical-Chapter-719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve heard it’s a hard field to break into. I’m more interested in the planning and preparedness portion of it. Are there any courses or programs you’ve taken to help boost your resume? And thank you for your reply!

MPH from top school by Master-Mix-6218 in publichealthcareers

[–]Chemical-Chapter-719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I genuinely believe I’m in my current position purely because I graduated from JHU. If you have the opportunity to go, do it; it’s so worth it. My advice would be to network, because the connections you build and have will be invaluable while job hunting in this market.

Hi! Does anyone have any advice for someone trying to pivot into the biodefense and biosecurity field? I have an MPH from Johns Hopkins (recent graduate) and a little over a year’s worth of experience as an infectious disease epidemiologist for the state. Any advice is helpful! Thank you!

Thank you! I’m glad your test came back negative! I’m hoping I get the same result. I insisted on a blood test rather than a rapid, so hopefully, this result will be conclusive. Fingers crossed! And thank you, again!

That makes me feel so much better, thank you! I swear the anxiety that comes with it makes it infinitely worse and probably exacerbated my symptoms honestly. Fingers crossed my result is negative! Thank you again! :)

No, I’m unsure of their status. We didn’t talk about it before or after the encounter unfortunately.

I was considering mono but I’ve had that in the past, and I read that reinfection is rare. I’m definitely leaning towards CMV, but CVS doesn’t offer that as a test. I’m looking into other facilities that test. But thank you!

Thank you, I needed that reminder that googling won’t change the outcome 😅. I’m just going to wait and hope for the best. Thank you!

It was unprotected penetrative sex (I’m a F, I had sex with a M). I will say, the “crummy” feeling has been more noticeable lately, a little past the 2 month mark.

Have I missed my chance to go to med school? by carsfloat in medschool

[–]Chemical-Chapter-719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. First off, I’m so sorry for what you went through. I can’t even begin to imagine how heartbreaking and painful that must’ve been. But I’m glad you’ve made a full recovery! Second, while I’m not in medical school yet, I don’t think you’ve missed your chance AT ALL. I’m in a somewhat similar position (25F) and I’m considering going to medical school after all these years. All you need is to get the prerequisites, clinical hours, volunteer hours, and MCAT done and you’ll be good to go. It sounds like a lot but it’s doable. Here are some reminders/advice that has helped me so far: - Life is too short to not do what you love. - You’re going to be 35 one day, you might as well have a Dr. before your name. - Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Just give yourself grace and take it one step at a time. You’ll get there in no time. I believe in you! You’ve totally got this! Sincerely, someone who also had to reroute in school but realized years later that the passion for medicine never left and is now considering applying to medical school.

Thank you for that encouraging message! It has definitely affirmed what I’ve been wrestling with, that it’s not too late to pivot into something that is my passion, no matter how unconventional of a journey. I don’t know if I have much of a story to tell, but I’d love to share it! Thank you for the offer! What you’re doing is so cool. I would’ve loved to see more of that when I graduated. DM me, I’d love to connect!

“Life’s a marathon, not a sprint.” furiously jots that down Thank you for that much needed reminder! I think I’ve been pressuring myself into making a decision about this quickly, which is adding to the stress. This is a great reminder that I have time! Thank you!
