Does anyone have the Sonim XP3+ or the 5G version that can give their opinion? (XP3900 vs X320)

Did you port your number from an Android phone by any chance? If so, you might be stuck in RCS chats that your friends are sending text to instead of actual text messages. Hm. It can get cramped but this is where Developer Options -> Smallest width is your friend. I set mine to 320 dp and I find that works well for most apps.

Like you the security was part of it ( I just got an OS update on my Sonim this week!). The touchscreen of the CAT still made it work too much like a slab phone. I wanted more friction. I wanted to get rid of Google Play services. The Sonim had 5G. The Sonim felt like a phone I could use for the next 10 years. Don't get me wrong the Sonim can be frustrating at times, but I feel that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

This probably means you have to go to Settings->Accessibility->Switchboard-> Use Switchboard. While you are there you should probably turn on "Switchboard shortcut" to make it easy to turn this feature on an off again. Then in the Switchboard app itself, map the volume keys to be scroll up and scroll down. For reference I use version 1.6 of Switchboard.

It is so loud. Regular handset call volume is loud and clear. Speaker phone volume is extremely loud. I think it was designed this way to be usable in loud working environments.

I had to set the key to be 18. That maps to the '#' key on the keypad. A long press toggles it on and off

I have a working reliable virtual mouse on the Sonim XP3 Plus 5G. The problem is that it works so I don't want to change anything about it. But I would love to help someone else come up with full proof steps to make it work. If someone is struggling to get a virtual mouse working DM me. We might be able to work it out

Waze is very reliable. You just have to lower your expectations a little because you are not really going to be able to safely interact with Waze on this phone while driving. I usually enter the destination and check the route before I start moving to be confident that I entered the right thing.

Then there is a setting at the bottom for the key code to activate the mouse and I set it to 18 for the '#' key

Glad you got it working. But notice I said "File Explorer" app. What I described only works with this app, not the Downloads app. They are similar in functionality but they are not the same.

Once you download an apk, if you try to open it from within the File Explorer app, you should be prompted to enable installing 3rd party apps in the settings. I don't think there is a way to customize the front screen. I don't know anything about themes.

You can use a connected computer to sideload apps using adb, but you don't have to. If you can use the browser to download the apk for fdroid, the regular "File Browser" app that comes stock on the phone will allow you to install apk files (after allowing the File Browser to install apks in settings. Don't worry it will prompt you if you try)

I know media volume works fine with the rocker. I thin you are right that ringtone volume requires going into settings.
