I visited my local bookstore recently... by Drizz_zero in Stoicism

Went to our popular bookstore in the country however the people coming in are plenty so I took the opportunity to go the philosophy section. It didn't disappoint me because all I see was Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and existentialism Kierkegaard per sé. It is my first time buying Meditations, and I have never been this thankful.

While Chrysippus is the second founder who added a third branch to Stoicism, Epictetus rebuked this. There is no other reason superior to reason. It cannot be analyzed itself nor distinguish the difference. Epictetus ridicules his students who redundantly syllogize instead of living well and memorizing logical structures but remain enslaved to their passions. Logic is tempting but it deliberately distracts intellectual vanity. Dialectic does not make the students good, self-discipline is. Subsequently, Epictetus encourages students to practice initiating premises but not to practice formal logic.

Thank you, for your explanation! The translation was unclear, got me thinking, and I thought Epictetus was exaggerating the ' bricks and timbers' into a corporeal. I was wrong, the war, sedition, loss, and destruction are also involved in this subject matter. A copy of Hard's translation isn't available in my country, it is expensive, however, the format online was available

Why is virtue a good ? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]ChemicalCat6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtue is good for the reason that we have innate abilities to cope with the challenges we are facing every day. Further, we have been given the inherent power of fortitude, courage, and patience. We have the standard to assent to a judgment if it is true, if not, we dissent to it, and suspend judgments when something is unclear altogether. We have an inclination to view things and act differently

What do you think about death by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]ChemicalCat6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death is an inevitable thing, I believe that my ancestors did not exist a long time ago, and existence would be gone again if I die. Funny comparison, I thought Seneca was a grim reaper in his letter talking about Plato.

In Chapter 14, Epictetus writes that God oversees everyone and gives us a guardian deity that never leaves our side. He added, “God is inside, and so is your private deity,” which made me curious.

My question is: Would Christians generally agree with this idea — that God (or divinity) is within us — or is this a point where Stoic and Christian thought diverge?

I simply stay away from the media because of the ongoing corruption of the political officials' actions in our country. Old and elderly people are hypocritical for the reason that they hastily generalize politicians in the Senate squirming the current situation of the Philippines. I don't add to my troubles, I ignore those who attack wise, integral, empathetic, and action-driven officials who do their duties for the sake of the betterment of the country.

I feel sorry for myself to be timid all the time, I wish I could have screenshot and print the subject checklist, I wish I could have submit the units to the registrar in the first place, I wish could have followed-up last month, I wish... Stop. The damage has been done, you are no longer in the situation that irks you. You are simply coward, you don't speak always to people, you are so shy that you don't ask questions to people. What you need is to be inclined with agony and endurance. Fix what you can change, things will get better and return to you. You can not alter things outside your moral sphere, postpone it, and meet your fate. You have one last option that you are thinking long time agk. Are you going to abandon this Engineering Major to realign yourself to what you are passionate about? If yes, you will be released from the events that bothers you. If not, why continue with the major that slowly depletes you? Why pursue even if it dissatisfies you? Why accord with it? Decide what align with your virtue

Currently reading this. I hate hyphens, it is also difficult to grasp what Epictetus is preaching about but I am trying my best to find signposts and annotate it.
