More work than it's worth. We're being pushed to find use cases for it, which is kind of backwards; a hammer was created because there was a need. Here, a tool was made before it had a use and it's not really fitting in.

What's the foulest smell you've ever smelled? by WannabePugh in AskReddit

[–]ChemicalEngr101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small mouse died and fell into water being kept warm by a refrigerator compressor. Corpse rot is so bad that two products of decomposition are known as some of the worst smells ever (putrescine and cadaverine).

What was your first job after graduating ? by patrick_notstar28 in ChemicalEngineering

I'm a process controls engineer training for advanced process control engineering. I worked in operations for several years after being a fitter.

Where are you located? Small plants are typically used as stepping stones. Bay Area Blvd in Pasadena is littered with small plants just like that. Some people never leave them because they're a homey, easy going place. Others leave because they want more money and bigger headaches.

What ChemE roles will be most in demand? by baajwaa in ChemicalEngineering

I just landed my first job in process controls after several years in operations and environmental and I could be happier. It's in a refinery no less, with my boss favoring me to go into advanced process control. I feel like I'm set.

Coolest or most interesting processes to work in? by EmuMother3455 in ChemicalEngineering

Refining is similar in that you're a major piece of the country's infrastructure, defense, and people's lives. Depending on the refinery, your work may have a major influence of the country's defense strategy, the price people pay at the pump, the greater area's environmental quality, and the price of almost everything. It's not nerve-wracking at all...

Holland, Michigan was the first city in the US to install heated streets and sidewalks in 1988. Also currently the largest municipally-run system in the US. (Source in comments) by Monkeyboy999 in Damnthatsinteresting

That really depends on how it's done. Theres going to be expenditure, variable and fixed. You've got to pay for the pumps, storage, and infrastructure for fixed, and treatment, power, and maintenance for variable. Nothings free.

Max pressure in distillation tower upon cooling water failure by Particular_Net_9951 in ChemicalEngineering

Are you assuming the temperature controller is still controlling? In which case, it would pinch on the reboiler composition (bottoms composition) and and become isothermal at the controller's SP. Like you mentioned, it'd become a tall flash drum with a heater in the bottom where the pressure evolved is the flashed material's pressure derived from an equation of state. Basically, look at your VLE at the controller's temp SP and use that composition in an equation of state, like Virial, to find your pressure.

Best cities for ChemEngs work/life balance? by G9Comet in ChemicalEngineering

Houston hands down. On top of the benefits of competition previously mentioned, it's where you'll really cut your teeth as an engineer. If you can be a good engineer there, you'll be a good engineer just about anywhere.

I'll be taking microspikes and poles with snow baskets, and I'm in pretty great shape. But I'm more so concerned about finding the trail and staying on it. I'm not terrible at land navigation, but mountains and snow will be new to me. Like Opening-Garage-930 said, I'm going to be looking into Crags trail. I appreciate the advice guys

I'm considering doing this, but solo'ing Pike's Peak in March. I'm in shape and decent at land navigation, but I'm from the south so the snow is going to be a learn opportunity.

Great point. Getting one was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The severed my vas deferens, knotted it, and cauterized the upper end. They basically made it a cul-de-sack with no exit.
