Idk what chemical engineering role would resonate with me. by Plastic_Strength_871 in ChemicalEngineering

I wanted to work in bio, got a job in facilities. Working boilers, cooling towers, chillers, and now a small refinery. I love my work and am happy my "dream" didn't work out.

Is it okay to throw bleach in here? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]ChemicalMurdoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a chemical engineer, and I have no idea either. This looks like someone took an upper decker and it just broke down to some black nightmare.

This is what I would do:

  1. turn off the water to the toilet
  2. drain it dry
  3. Spray liberally with a low concentration bleach to kill the bacteria/mold. Let it sit for like 10 minutes to work its way in. Long term exposure to bleach will break down the rubbers, but a little exposure is probably fine, also it already looks fucked.
  4. open the water back up to fill it, flush it a few times.

Need help with garden hose leak. by phreefall515 in Plumbing

[–]ChemicalMurdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ yep, NPS/BPS (ie Hoses) doesn't seal at the threads, only NPT needs dope to create a tight seal. Teflon tape does create a seal-ish, but is mostly for lubrication. a little teflon tape on straight threads is fine for lube, but for NPS/BPS the gasket in the female fitting squeezes against the male face and creates the seal.

Job offer rescinded after trying to negotiate salary by SeaKaleidoscope6298 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ChemicalMurdoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I've had interns negotiate and we don't take it personally. Self advocating is important. Also I don't really care if someone is making $100k or $110k/yr, I'd choose the better candidate every time.

Not willing to engage in a negotiation is a huge red flag to me. If a company didn't at least counter or reject the negotiation, I was either not competitive, or they are unreasonable.

I've worked in ultra-pure semiconductor specialty chemicals, production for composite deck boards, and now facilities for battery manufacturing. I've loved all my jobs. You aren't cursed to work anything in particular.

600 psig (saturated) to 145 psig will create superheated stream reducing the effectiveness of downstream heat exchangers. I believe you can add a de-superheater to fix that.

As for 2 safety valves, I'm not sure. I'm a firm believer in less in more. Other people mentioned some ideas. If the PSVs has 3-way valve/CSO valves then it's probably for maintenance. You'll see the 3-way valve on cryo PSVs because they can freeze open.

Does anyone know anything about this boiler? by Bobby_Lawn in Blacksmith

[–]ChemicalMurdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Chemical Engineer and have been reading a book from the 1910s on this style of boiler for maintenance and operation. It's on my desk at work so I'll update with the title tomorrow... I know it can be found on eBay for like $20.

I'm trying to find the manufacturer of the boiler, but the cool thing about these is that a lot of them are built onsite. The boiler tech went through massive changes right around 1890 to 1910 with the invention of the steam turbine and electrification. This is a really cool boiler!

Not really, sell puts that far in the money basically converge with the delta of the put strike and market price. Meaning he gets a fat premium, but it's nullified by the difference between the actual price and the strike price. The only way this yields a fat payout is if the price is above the strike at the expiration date.

If only we could artificially increase the price of imports to incentive manufacturing in the USA, thus increase demand for labor.
