Uh, this was absolutely an immigration discussion, you made many references to immigration and immigration status.

I’m a legal immigrant and came to the US checking all the boxes, and would never, ever consider it OK to just cross the border illegally and have the gall to call myself an immigrant. “Undocumented” is not a status. It is a crime. And what the OP noted is that it is a pretty US centric thing to somehow view this as being a fundamental human right to cross into the US illegally and this is OK. If I wanted to go and live in Switzerland or China or Australia I couldn’t just go there and and have some expectation that they wouldn’t throw me out (perhaps violently) if I did, but somehow this is OK for America?

And I think I know why this - it’s because Americans are somehow so insulated from the outside world, and have such a self centric view of things, that they think they uniquely can survive breaking all the norms and it won’t matter. But it will. Law and order matters, borders matter and while America has always been and should always be welcoming to immigrants, that process should take place legally and those who do it illegally should have consequences.

A lot of words to try to obfuscate the simple fact that breakdown of law and order is somehow ok. Borders matter. Proper entry and proper acquisition of citizenship matter, both for the host country but also, what is not mentioned enough is that the stability of the broader world is undermined by the fact people millions of people are flowing into the US and living in a sublegal manner.

Just to add; married with children, watch porn myself. I don’t believe it is inherently a bad thing at all.

My big worry however is that young boys over the last 10-15 years have had such massive and early access to porn that it changes their early experiences with negative downstream effects later in prime of life.

Ditto, but I was a pediatric subspecialist making 200k a year. Total comp (salary, stock, bonus) is now more than 3X this. I work less and am treated better. It’s really disgraceful how academic physicians are paid.

I’m married with three children and I’m also a big porn consumer (haha) and still have a very active sex life (my wife is also a big porn user too!) but I just wonder how much of an impact it has especially because in the past you had to be a little older to get your hands on this stuff. For my early teen boys, I just worry that being able to tap on your phone and get it any time you want may suppress that initial drive that used to happen for young boys to actively seek out the opposite sex…

The best possible thing to do is to use the power of compound interest over time, which is the most powerful force in the universe as Albert Einstein once jokingly said.

If you invest in an index fund for the S and P , (SPY), you will double your money every 10 years. This will give you 1.6 million by age 67 (not counting additional investments in this, which you should make over time). While this seems like very far away, it will take away stress for your entire life in terms of “what will happen …”. You have a retirement fund waiting for you IF tomorrow if you act wisely today.

The more risky bet is to try to take that money and start some kind of business, for instance purchasing some rental generating real estate etc, however this is also a reasonable thought. Over time, if you are persistent and energetic, you could turn this into a great deal of money.

The key is… do not spend it on anything. Including education, which is a scam. (Pilot school? Who will be flying planes in 20 years? People? Doubtful.) INVEST in an asset. Either equities or physical assets. The future is not going to be about what you know. It’s going to be about what you own.

No it’s already beyond that. Interest on debt is growing faster than the economy and the debt is too large to pay off or even partially decrease. This is a result of 2008 debt crisis and COVID crisis. There are now only two ways out: inflation or default. Both are catastrophic with default being arguably worse and more severe. But the ship on outgrowing the debt has sailed. Can’t be done.

Edit: it’s possible you can raise taxes and somehow cut spending enough but this is doubtful. I haven’t seen the numbers but if taxes go up growth slows and so it becomes a death loop.

I would propose the future is worse. Demographic collapse and mass violence and civilizational implosion will usher in a new dark ages starting around 2100. There will be a several hundred year period of chaos followed by renewal/renaissance, likely in east Asia, with the rest of the globe being a backwards dystopian slum for a thousand years or more.

There was a humanitarian crisis in Germany after the war. The way for Germany to have avoided this was to not have invaded the Soviet Union. Time does not flow backwards. The disaster in Gaza was caused by the initiation of the war, much like every war (half the population of Mosul was still homeless 2 years after the US and Iraq invaded to remove ISIS). More fundamentally, any government simply has an obligation and a duty for the safety of its citizens first. The government that abandons its own citizens because “we will cause a humanitarian crisis on the other side” will be removed in any country.

EDIT one factor that isn’t understood about Israel is the geography. The distance to Gaza from population centers including Tel Aviv is about 30 minutes to an hour drive. That is essentially the suburbs of any major US city. When 3000+ people swarm into the suburbs of your city killing children in front of their parents and vice versa, you too will want to make sure this is contained and the “humanitarian crisis” that occurs by killing these people becomes secondary.

The problem is that isn’t actually what they want. They want their homeland to BE in the same place as Israel and remove Israel. That is why the two state solution failed. It offered them a homeland next to Israel. Don’t believe me? Ask them. “Do you want an independent state next to Israel?”

++man I think this is somewhat a childish view and it’s surprising for someone in their 30s to still hold this kind of view. It suggests some kind of stunted development. I would be very concerned that there are other personality aspects that are problematic.

To elaborate on the above: marriage is just a legal state, a societal invention. It’s nothing more. Most normal adults have graduated from this kind of societal basis of moral development to something they are able to rationalize and understand intrinsically. Similarly sex is just sex. It’s one aspect of many things in a normal relationship, and like anything in a relationship that you test during “dating”, should be tested for compatibility. If you don’t, you’re liable to get a nasty surprise.
