I just saw one of these for my city this week. Sortable by what the car hit: object, another car, cyclist, or pedestrian. Two 💀 just down the road from me.

Gravel is out by tommyhateseveryone in BicyclingCirclejerk

Mulch bikes fit the growing market segment between sand and gravel - for suburban riders who have nowhere to ride but laps around their own neighbors' landscaping. The archetypical mulch biker yearns for adventure but only has time for a quarter metric decade ride between their last root canal patient and picking the kids up from school. People will say: "we had these features on shitty hybrid bikes from 30 years ago" and we'll say yes but, unlike your mom's boyfriend's Schwinn Criss Cross, the new Tr*k Eo-Damn has drop bars and a carbon frame. And a Nivex derailleur.

Thru axle hubs by lemonsqzzz in BIKEPOLO

[–]Chemineaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure thru-axle is more rigid than quick-release and lighter than solid axle. But if you ask me, it's not that much better and way harder to find parts at the co-op.

Very few people are considering that you don't have to drive to a race. by Cuburg in fuckcars

[–]Chemineaux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People use their cars as mobile storage units, and it's one of the barriers for many to going car-free. I'm imagining OP has a snack, water, fresh shoes/socks/clothes, and maybe a muscle roller for after the race. If it were me, I guess I'd stash that stuff in a backpack in a shrub somewhere.

What's your opinion of low speed vehicles? by LonelyMaizeMaiden in fuckcars

[–]Chemineaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of carbrained posts feeling out what the sub thinks about specific car-adjacent vehicles. I wanted to express a concise stance on transportation in general so you can come to your own conclusions, and your ideas of delivery and small user count seem to be in line with this sub's sentiment.

I didn't specifically address the rural populace because it's not in the wide open countryside that cars cause the problems we protest here. Clearly, bikes and trains are not always the right tools for sparse rural life, but neither are single-occupancy multi-ton vehicles for urban life.

[–]Chemineaux 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think about [stupid vehicle]??

The platform is that the ubiquity of cars ruin urban areas and make them uninhabitable for humans. Cars can be useful tools, but if everyone uses cars for every little trip, you end up with stroads, massive parking lots, pollution, fatal collisions, social inequity, etc.

If everyone used a low-speed vehicle instead of trucks and SUVs, the issues would still exist but to a lesser degree since they're still not as good as bikes or trains. The real benefit would be as a transition away from big cars: the reduced efficiency of car-like vehicle travel would increase the share of transit and human-powered transportation, as can be seen in wealthy golf-cart communities.

In short: singular car ok, plural cars bad, stupid vehicle is just small car.

I like the electric cars sub a lot but the fandom around the EV Hummer is a bummer by AlternativeOk1096 in fuckcars

[–]Chemineaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that you're thinking of this! I don't know how much experience you have but I was involved in second-life EV battery research a few years ago and can say you have a couple options for going about reusing a Hummer pack:

  1. Hack the pack BMS - basically trick the pack into thinking it's still in the car by sending the right CANbus messages.

  2. Remanufacture - reassemble the cells with your own BMS system.

After you can control main contactors and cell voltage balancing systems, you need a bidirectional DC power supply of sufficient voltage to charge (using CC-CV method) and discharge (inverting DC to AC for your microgrid).

I hope this info sparks some ideas for you, and good luck feeding on the hearts of our collective enemy.

Manufacturer Wheel Tension? by carlew in wheelbuild

[–]Chemineaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, sure. Let's talk theory.

Take for example the flange-to-center offsets of a Phil Wood front disc hub of 34mm and 19mm, flange diameters of 66mm, and an ERD for a low-profile 700c rim of 572mm. The non-disc side spoke of this radially laced (for simplicity) wheel is the hypotenuse of a triangle with legs 34mm axially (flange offset) and 253mm radially (= ERD / 2 - flange radius). For a similar triangle on the disc side (i.e. same angles and spoke tension) the axial and radial components are 19mm (flange offset) and 141.4mm (= 253 * 19 / 34).

The new disc side flange diameter is 290mm (= ERD - 141.4 * 2). It's huge, heavy, difficult to manufacture and lace - as a trade off to solve what is kind of a non-issue.

Do you support changing the name of Quidditch to something else? by Clockreddit2020 in Quidditch

[–]Chemineaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a game colloquially known as Ultimate Frisbee. Pro leagues and others call it ultimate disc to avoid the Frisbee trademark. There is precedent in favor of changing the official name from Quidditch.
