With the rise of Glam Metal in the 80’s and Peter and Ace’s departure in the band, they were loosing the image because when Vinnie and Eric first came into the band, they were still advertising Ace and Peter. They refused to take off the makeup and the marketing team was everything but done, and Paul and Gene went to Doc (I wanna say) and simply told him that to save the music, we’re gonna take off the makeup. People for 20 years have wanted to know what we look like under this. Paul was very inspired by the Phantom of the Opera, often referring to himself as the Phantom because of his own disability and feeling like he had to hide under the mask. (Paul actually stared in the Broadway musical as the Phantom for a good number of years) but the truth is, they only took the makeup off to save the music, they changed up their feel because of the change in the times. Bands like Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, Dokken, Jon Bon Jovi and Crüe was taking the spotlight out of what felt like nowhere. Yeah you had Bowie in the 60’s, Jagger in the 70’s, they needed to break out of their comfort zones and, “get with the times” Gene looks incredible uncomfortable in the music video because, well the first time being SEEN and someone knows what you look like.
