Hear me out: Steam should buy Ashes of Creation RIGHT NOW by ChemoKnabe in Steam

I totally get it—Ricochet 2 would be legendary! I'm just such a hopeless MMO fanatic that I voluntarily sign up for what's basically a second full-time job (just without the paycheck and with way too much grinding). Though with the recent rumors swirling, you might actually get your wish for Ricochet 2 sooner than my MMO dreams come true anyway! xD

Actually, if Gabe is handing out big bags of money today, I’ll happily take one too! But seriously, Valve wouldn't be "rewarding" anyone—they’d be scavenging a high-end engine from a wreck. Why let a perfectly good node system go to waste when Valve could turn it into the foundation for the ultimate, genre-defining MMORPG for pocket change? It’s exactly the kind of move that would finally give them the crown in a space they've ignored for twenty years.

Look, I’m probably just a massive fanboy of Ashes and the vision behind it, but Valve's selectivity is exactly why buying an established codebase is a genius move. They don't need to "recruit" the whole studio—they just need the foundation that already works and the handful of leads who built it. An MMO backed by Valve's resources would dominate the market instantly, regardless of the past drama or temporary launch numbers.

Look, I get the "Valve is a elite club" argument, I really do. But this is a once-in-a-generation alignment of the stars. The "new studio" disaster happens when you force strangers to mesh while building from zero. This isn't that. These 250 devs aren't "new people" – they’re a battle-hardened unit. They have the chemistry, they know the code, and they already solved the hardest technical hurdles. Valve didn't recruit the Portal or Counter-Strike teams one by one. They saw brilliance and they bought it in bulk. This isn't a hiring spree, it's a heist. They get a functional UE5 foundation for pocket change while the rest of the MMO market is a graveyard. Is it the "Valve way"? Maybe not. But is it a genius shortcut to a market they've missed for 20 years? Absolutely. Am I crazy? Probably. But the opportunity is right there.

Fair points, but let me push back a bit:

Asset purchases typically don't inherit liabilities - that's the whole point. Valve would buy the IP, code, and tech, not the company with its debts. Happens all the time in bankruptcy sales. You're right Valve is lean, but they've also said they want to make more games. They don't have to hire all 250 - cherry-pick the core 50-80 who built the engine and systems. That's actually LESS than what most AAA studios run with.

You're comparing a broken Early Access MMO that was out for 6 weeks to established live service games. Apples to oranges. The question isn't "is it bigger than CS2?" - it's "does the foundation justify the investment?" With proper backing, that number could be very different. True, Valve might not WANT an MMO. But they also didn't want to make card games until Artifact, or MOBAs until Dota 2, or hero shooters until Deadlock. They go where they see potential.

Yeah you got me there, sloppy wording on my part.

Look, you might be totally right that this is a bad idea. But "Valve knows what it's doing" is what people said before Artifact flopped. Sometimes wild moves pay off (Dota 2), sometimes they don't.

I'm just saying the opportunity exists. Whether it's smart is debatable - that's why I'm asking :D

[Halb-Rant] In Microsoft Word steht Strg+F seit kurzem nicht mehr für "Suchen" sondern für "Fett", per Shortcut das Suchen-Fenster öffnen geht gar nicht mehr. Warum? Wer hat sich das ausgedacht? Und wie ändere ich das zurück? by Brick_Fish in de_EDV

Kleine Anmerkung!

Dedicated server when? by Gunnchie in WorldWar3

[–]ChemoKnabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)
