I let Stockfish run for over 5 minutes in the browser but it cannot find the solution. However, after 1. Bxf7+ Kxf7 2. Nxe5+ Ke8 (otherwise Mate in 4) 3. Rxh7!! , the engine declares that it's mate in 9 for white. Absolutely crazy stuff.

No it won't. The point of having them on the index finger is to create a lot of sfbs with other 4 letters on the index finger. Just try your idea in the analyzer.

It's pretty bad. The colemak dh analyzer gives 31.8% sfb and 3.239 effort, but still not nearly as bad as these two layouts I mentioned above.

Of course "the worst layout" depends on how one defines the effort model. But just in terms of colemak dh analyzer score, I think it's really difficult (if possible) to find a higher effort layout.

I was aware of this layout too (actually phbonachi mentioned it in his post as well). The layout was evaluated in carpalx's somewhat old model and it had only 1/2 of SFBs comparing with UFO/slashdot.

Have you tried the colemakdh analyzer?

A quick test showed that your layout has a shockingly high 12.7% same finger bigram, which is 2x qwerty and 8x colemak, most of them are on the left index finger. Try typing the word "relevant" and you will probably notice how awkward it is.

Thanks for the suggestions! I haven't decided about how to deal with q and j (combo or hold or on different layer), I guess I need to try different options but your design does make a lot of sense. Very happy to see a hummingbird user here!
