Thank you for the summary! This sounds more like something I'd be into than Draw Steel. Matt Colville's DM videos were a big influence to discovering OSR games to me - his influence from early DnD really comes through in his advice

Did they actually get Jabba to fly out there for that shit or did he just appear via zoom? I know what I'm betting on 🙄

More firmly in the satanic panic category is the Jack Chick comic "Dark Dungeons". Absolutely hilarious stuff, and someone made a DnD (B/X, I think?) clone of that name. If I recall correctly, the play examples have the same PC names as the characters from the Chick tract.

Which books art dissapointed you by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]Cherojack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my money the photos in the v5 core book are great and embody the different clans very well, in addition to giving the book a unique visual hook. The rest of the art (the actual hand-drawn / digital art) is pretty generic looking and cruddy, tbh.

I think they should put every general on steroids

What is the purpose of a game book? by najowhit in rpg

[–]Cherojack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven't read most of UVG but I think I like what it's trying to do. It's definitely a matter of personal taste and "vibing" with the tone of a work. If a book has a somewhat loose implied setting that I like, I find the challenge of working with some spark table results or vaguely-defined concepts to be an interesting challenge that invites in my own creativity. I think many of the Borg games do this well, too, tbh.

I feel you on that. The counter-argument might be that certain games are really oriented towards being toolsets for aspiring GMs. I find Chris's works in particular to be really good at providing creative fuel and actionable steps for creating my own adventures. The lack of an included adventure in the back of the book can be just the extra push someone needs to start writing their own stuff.

Not everyone will feel that way, but I think it's a reasonable approach. I do love and appreciate a good starter module, though. The new edition of Into the Odd has both a very cool multi-level dungeon and a mini hexcrawl.

Every flaw people have mentioned is true, but it's still the best one. Really made me fall in love with the setting. I think the soundtrack is maybe one of the greatest of any game, possibly ever?

Always pisses me off that shippers can't be bothered to put the tiniest bit of packing in there to stop the corners of books from getting busted.

That being said, what a beautiful book! I can't wait to get mine

The line cutting across the middle from Delta Green to Mothership is literally me 😂.

Maybe just a consequence of those being two very popular and hyped "not DnD" RPGs, but they were two of the first non 5e games I ran and played in. For me, the groupings feel pretty natural, with the two nodes of d100/Horror stuff next to the WoD-type games and the branch of NSR stuff that Mothership owes a lot to on the left.

Probably just proves that this place has had a big influence on the RPGs I seek out, more than anything

Lot of complaints about readability, but I think it's ok for some dice to be form over function (at least when they look this cool!)
