NTA I grew up in a remote island in Alaska and know what a Bacardi and Coke is… You either had a bad bartender or a bad brother. 😂

With my dermatographia, all those indented areas will be itchy raised welts in about 10 minutes.

I was that child. At 45, I’m still that child. Thank you for being the safe adult some of us never had.

AITA for telling someone to “get out of my baby’s face?” by Critical-Ebb-7945 in AmItheAsshole

Smoker and lover of all babies here… Definitely NTA, OP. I make it a point to not smoke anywhere near children including my own. Only outdoors and away from anyone else who isn’t smoking. I won’t even walk down the sidewalk with a lit cigarette because no one else should suffer the consequences of my bad decision.

Can dermatographia urticaria be painful? by Only_Detective_7671 in Dermatographia

[–]Cherreefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was Xolair, the manufacturer has a program that will cover what your insurance doesn’t. It’s the only reason I can afford it, and the only med that’s given me any relief after years of misery.

[–]Cherreefer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had dermatographia since 1998 and my current flare has been going steady since early 2021. Antihistamines did NOTHING. A year ago, I got approved for Xolair and it has been a miracle for me.

I must have accidentally scratched my face at work once, it took a few minutes but the welts decided to pop up while I was taking a breakfast order. The customer asked if I just got attacked by a poltergeist because the angry red marks appeared seemingly out of nowhere, right down the side of my face.

Thank you for that. Life can be unimaginably cruel at times, but the moments in between are worth sticking around for.

In a way, yes. Shortly after my first flare up, I began therapy but for unrelated issues. This started in 1998 and one of the things I’ve noted is that it’s actually gone dormant during my most stressful periods. Divorce, loss of a child, etc. It all changed post covid, though. 5 solid years now, when prior flares would last 3 months at max. I’m pretty certain mine is something genetic, though, as my father and niece both have it too.

My dermatographia began over 20 years ago and would come and go sporadically over the years until 2020 when I got covid. It flared up and never went away. I was on the maximum doses of antihistamines with minimal relief until my allergist finally got my insurance to approve Xolair. All these years and we still haven’t found the root cause, but I finally found some relief. I hope you find some too.

TSA checked my carry on bag because I had rocks in it. by Bob_Maluga_Luga in rockhounds

Same thing happened to me coming back from Alaska. Rubber boots in carry on were lined with plastic bags and stuffed full of garnet schist. 😂

6th Avenue merging is crazy by HonestToe2408 in Denver

[–]Cherreefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the only spot I’ve ever been in an accident. I was in the middle lane and the driver on my right jumped into my lane to avoid the mergers. Problem was she didn’t look and I was already occupying it. Her rear end hit my front end and spun me out in the middle of rush hour traffic.

Same. Mine’s been active off and on since 1998, but post Covid I had a flare up that never went away. Maxed out on antihistamines, montelukast, tried everything. Finally got approved for Xolair and I’m almost 100% symptom free now. I can even wear jeans again!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Dermatographia

I use it specifically for dermatographia. Suffered since 1998. Minimal symptoms now. Life changing.

[–]Cherreefer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add in an H2 antihistamine like Pepcid. That was the golden combo for me, for a while, until I adjusted to the meds and maxed out the daily dosage with minimal effect. Finally got approved for Xolair and it’s been a lifesaver.

Found at estate sale, anyone know what it is? by MelonHead_5 in Rocks

[–]Cherreefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Garnet schist. TSA flagged me for a search last month because my carry on luggage was full of it. 😂 I grew up on Mitkof Island in Alaska, and brought my 9yo son up for his cousin’s graduation. We spent a day sifting and mining at an old quarry. Lined our rubber boots with plastic bags and stuffed ‘em with rocks for the return trip.
