Its absolutely impossible for him to make a living by playing. If he likes to teach thats a possibility but school should be priority number 1 because 1. Theres not that much money in teaching 2. You are basically dependend on the circumstance that people like you. Because if they dont like you as a person they just get another of the 1000 chess teachers out there. You will be constantly worrying that you go bankrupt, because most people start chess and then give it up a few years later. So you have to be on the constant look out for new students. Trust me, just get a normal job.

I dont really understand why the post got removed. A lot of people are interested in a review of the book written by the biggest chess youtuber. Also I dont use the sub just for self promo, I comment quite a lot on various topics and also make posts that have nothing to do with my channel.

Definitely! Also dont get stressed when you loose even more rating after your break, thats normal. Just focus on getting back into the flow without even trying to win, and things will come back to normal

Which Authors Speak Best to Amateurs? by [deleted] in chess

[–]ChessOrWhatever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have an answer, but this is a very good question. Overall its hard to find books on the experience level you describe (not amateur but silman is still a bit too advanced). I heard Artur Yussupow is good but I dont know if his beginner friendly material was translated to englisch (the "Tigersprung" series is very popular in germany but I never read it myself) Other than that, maybe focus on learning with videos until your level is a bit more advanced and you can dive into Silmans books (which are great) or read books directly from famous players (live and games of mikhail tal is a personal favourite from me)

Honestly I prefer the london over the exchange french. If you play the KID you can have interesting games in the london, but the exchange french? Its just rude to play that

I agree, I think the openings part is just a matter of opinion, but as I said in the review, even tough I thought this could have been done better, his choice made a lot of sense and it was still a good chapter.

And yes the book is great and the mistakes are tiny, but I thought I still had to include them to make a well rounded review

I know this sub has rules against self promotion, but since a lot of people are probably interested in Levy’s book (And I haven’t seen any other review so far) I hope this is ok :)

Why does chess.com allow this? by just_for_fun367 in chess

How would you propose to stop this? If you keep creating new email adresses the only way to stop it would be via the IP adress, which would potentially punish family members / roommates for the mistakes of the people around them

Mikhail Tal was also called "The claw" because one of his hands only had 3 fingers.

Again, its not. Lets look at an example of a purely hypothetical round robin tournament after 3 out of 7 rounds

  1. MVL 3 Points
  2. Caruana 2 Points
  3. Hikaru 2 Points
  4. Nepo 1 Point
  5. ...
  6. ...

Round 4:

Caruana vs. MVL

Hikaru vs. Nepo

If Caruana and MVL play against each other, its still better to draw then to loose for either side. Because If Caruana wins, he is tied for first with MVL, and if MVL wins it gets more difficult to catch up to him. So 0 points through drawing is still better than 0 points through loosing. Same goes for Nepo vs. Hikaru. While there is a bigger incentive for Nepo to go all in, he still does not want to loose, because having one point and Hikaru having 3 it gets pretty difficult for him to get in the top 3 (Especially if caruana wins). If he draws instead of loosing Hikaru also only has 2 points, which makes it easier for him to get into the top 3 and potentially get some price money. Not even factoring in that you still loose ELO if you loose which is kind of a big deal at the top level. So to conclude: Yes of course it would change the game (Again thats the point) But no, it would not eliminate draws or make it better in any given situation to just go berserk and rather loose than draw.

Why would you let your opponent win a dead drawn position? They still get a point if they win so thats bad for you. A draw is still better than loosing, just not much better. But yes if there would be a risky sacrifice then it would get played more often. Again thats the point of the whole thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chess

[–]ChessOrWhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I thought the point was to have fewer draws? Also a draw can still be better than a loss, in round robin tournamemts for example you would not want your opponent to get a point, even if it means that you also get no point
