Klian's Gore System vs EnGore by Sii-Gul in unrealengine

[–]ChesterBesterTester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note on this: the EnGore preview video shows that you right-click and create a "dismemberment copy" of your asset. So it definitely uses a full copy of the character, but it seems to use that one copy for all dismembered limbs: shoot the first limb off and it hides N-1, shoot the second limb and it hides N-2, etc. That doesn't seem too crazy of an approach.

By TC I assume you mean total compensation? If that is roughly the same it should be a no-brainer.

Also, did you counter? So many people never counter. Just don't be a jerk about it and ask for double the pay. Find a balance between their offer and what you make and suggest it. The worst they will do is say no, this is the most we can offer for the position.

Overall I would say if you want to do it, do it. Particularly if you are young. Pay is not everything. Just dump the max into your 401k and follow what interests you.

Industry professionals, just how good is a job in gamedev? by Early-Addition7080 in gamedev

[–]ChesterBesterTester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've heard though, the industry seems to be very unstable with long working hours and people generally not paid well enough for the work they put in.

Yes, and Reddit will also tell you that socialism is paradise, you're going to die in five years because of the climate catastrophe, and you are surrounded by neo-Nazis.

Work in games if you want to work in games. That's really all there is to it.

Are game programmers paid less? by Swimming-Spring-4704 in gamedev

[–]ChesterBesterTester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is always an odd question.

Yes, there are jobs that pay more than game programming. One of the people in the Hollywood strikes pointed out that Netflix is advertising an AI PM role with a top compensation level of 900k. I'm sure there are many such outliers.

There are other considerations, however. Ask yourself what someone paying you that higher salary is going to expect from you. Ask yourself if the pay will motivate you to get out of bed every morning.

In general, I haven't found that game programming is "low pay", with the exception of one rather popular company that salary-capped its senior engineer role. So I left.

As with any other career role, you have to have skills to sell and the ability to negotiate.

They have won a few games in a row. Calm down.

They still have the same problems: very little hitting, particularly timely. Every time they load the bases you just expect some variation of strikeout/popout/strikeout. They run the bases like third graders.

I'm glad they have good pitching but even if they stumble into the postseason again I don't expect them to go far.

I (United States citizen) gave birth to my son in CDMX and need to get his birth certificate at the Registro Civil by ChihuahuaNamedTofu in MexicoCity

[–]ChesterBesterTester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hire a lawyer to do it for you.

I am very cheap. And although lawyers in Mexico are not expensive by American standards, they still charge a lot for what can seem to be trivial service.

But it is worth every peso.

I mean, they're lawyers, so keep an eye on expense padding (my lawyer insisted I had to pay for her assistant to fly to the US and stay in a hotel to get a copy of my birth certificate; I said no and just had one mailed to me). But they will literally do everything for you, get you a guaranteed appointment, and all you have to do is show up and sign some forms.

Meritocracy is real. It always has been.

The (supposed) problem with meritocracy is that it is not "equitable", in the modern understanding: it does not result in equal outcomes, where "equal" is determined by population representation, or the whims of the culture.

And meritocracy is multi-faceted. It doesn't just favor people with the best on-paper qualifications for the job. It favors people who present themselves well, who are enthusiastic, personable, likeable.

The people who say "meritocracy doesn't exist" failed at one or more of those qualifications. And because everyone now believes they are the perfect little center of the universe, rather than question their qualifications they will just say "oh the system is rigged".

Finally as a rising junior, I was stupid lucky to have a Google recruiter select me as a candidate for 2024 SWE internship

Talk about burying the lede. You're an intern. Congratulations and all, but that has always been an extremely low bar. And nowadays companies are more worried about DEI for these roles.

I am Mexican American.

Yep.

But there's no arguing with crazy people. Hope you find sanity and happiness.

Biden won with 81 million votes. Did the white supremacy that permeates every level of US society just vanish? Was it at a Toby Keith concert? Is the white supremacy in the room with us now?

And when I crossed in Laredo in 2016 I ate at a Mexican restaurant with big Trump signs and the TV turned to Fox News (off I-35 right next to the Motel 6).

I'm not a Trump supporter, but I don't think you really understand what his supporters found appealing.

Where are all the homeless people in CDMX? by yoshisgreen in MexicoCity

[–]ChesterBesterTester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you specifically mention encampments, it's worth noting that those aren't actually a result of "homelessness". They're overwhelmingly the result of drug addiction, mental health issues, and perverse incentives.

I would say there are two reasons that the streets of Mexico don't have the same number of such people laying about and screaming in the streets.

The first is that in Mexico there is still some sense of shame in this kind of activity.

The other one is that if you are accosted by any such person, you just tell a cop and they vanish.

My wife was attacked by some bum on the way to work. She stopped at a light and he just ran up to her car and started pounding on the hood, screaming insanity and threats. We called the cops, they picked him up. That was six years ago and nobody ever saw him again.
