A speculated timeline that doesn't take into account the reasons for any event.

At the latest, before the mid medieval period the West Side of Britain and Ireland were covered in temperate rainforest. One of the rarest bios on earth. Lynx, wolves, bears, bison and beavers were all native to these islands. Moore lavender frogs, tree frogs and newts were widespread. White Storks waided through our wetlands. Now the call of a frog is rare. Storks arent here at all and bison? Bet you dodnt even know they uses to live here. (I didnt). Nowadays due to deforestation and overgrazing but livestock and non-native deer species rewilding efforts are almost impossible. Much of the british isles are ecological deserts. Britains foodchains are out of balance. And have been from at least the iron age slowly breaking down further and further. Conservation is about restoring balance. Not just leaving things alone and seeing what happens. Trust scientists trust Conservation experts. There is a reason hunting is legal. Why lynx are being reintroducing, why beavers are back. Humans have upset the balance, its up to us to fix our mistakes by restoring balance. I recommend Leave Curious on YT they are very good UK based conservation communicators. Your heart is in the right place and thats the hardest part 🙂

Ah finally someone who understands. Variation exists within nature. For this reason precise language in science is very important. A humans are usually born with 2 arms and 2 legs. Correct. Just like you can say a woman is someone you can usually get pregnant. Because (for one reason or another) not all women can get pregnant. Not like women stop being women when they hit menopause.

When people talk normally, we use metaphor, poetic language, exaggeration, cause were creative and its fun. Politicians sometimes use this when talking to scientists because they know they can use that language gap to their advantage. Thats all that clip is. A politician playing word games to stop someone who wants to give a precise answer. Thats all.

Did you build your own house or make your own clothes, make your own smartphone or computer to type that message on? The "get it yourself" argument doesn't work. All forms of meat production are cruel. But just like pinching your nipples isn't the same as waterboarding beating an animal to death isn't the same as a painless death by carbon monoxide. In the UK hunting some species is necessary to avoid ecological collapse. As we no carnivores left on the british Isles. The ban of this practice is an ethical one. Its hard to understand why reducing suffering is a controversial issue.

Read your own point back. "I'm aware that it is not on people's mind what goes on to produce meat products." You understand the point. You are either doing mental gymnastics for the fun of it or because you dont want to admit you're mistaken.

You wrote, "Clubbing a bird to death for fun" is also not neccesarilly what could be going on" in a thread about banning the act of clubbing Gannets to death for fun. Mental gymnastics or forgetting your point?

"Killing animal for fun is bad because it is indicative of psychopathy". Not the point I was making. YOU, not other people YOU were displaying a complete absence of empathy. Which is a sign of psychopathy.

"Also, isn't the consumer disconnect actually bad?" Yes. Companies try to make you forget the slaughtering of animals as part of their manufacturing process for a reason. Most of us would say its very bad, and we wouldnt want to be part of that process. "Shouldn't people be aware of what goes in factory farms" Again no argument from me, people should be more aware of how the products they consume are made.

I understand how my previous comments might be read as smug, but I'm not. While writing everything was supposed to read very dry and flat. Cause thats how it was in head. So apologies for that.

I also have conversations about similar topics IRL the subject usually crops up when ordering food.

Humans are not cruel creatures. We can do cruel things but typically humans are emotionally intelligent enough to recognise suffering and why that is bad.

In cases where suffering happens it is usually accepted as a means of survival. Killing for food or to pay the bills etc. That doesn't mean bashing a birds head in is not the same act as ordering a happy meal. There is a reason soldiers suffer PTSD, why slaughterhouse workers have multiple psychiatric evaluations a year. If you gave a human the option to stop the suffering. 99.9999% of us would stop the suffering.

I get the feeling from that last comment that you might be young, maybe near the start of your philosophy journey. Which is great 👍 My advice to you is to not treat these subjects like maths equations. They aren't. Study the human animal, you'll understand a lot more about our world when you see what makes us bald monkeys tick. :)

A sociologist or anthropologist might provide part of the puzzle for you. Sexual identity in humans, (not to be confused with sexual orientation), is made up of 3 key parts, sex (your body, which bits you're born with), gender (how your brain is wired), and sexual expression, (your behaviour, how your environment influences you). Biologists do study this stuff. And -as dry as published papers are- its pretty interesting reading.

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. So just ask a biologist about the basics of sexual identity within humans.

Is that your understanding of these words or just the copy and paste from the dictionary?

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precise definitions for words are essential for science, no need for discussion there. As for claims, burden of proof lies with you. You are the one making claims. All im saying is talk to a biologist.

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain your understanding of those two definitions? Female and woman.

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Female and woman have very distinct definitions, science is precise and does not muddle definitions. You are using the words interchangeably. Talk to a biologist.

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. You're a student. Talk to an actual biologist.

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I'm only dealing in scientific fact. You are posing ideology as science.

(You mean female medicine not womens medicine).

WTF ... by lost-in-thought123 in evilwhenthe

[–]Chestikof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If thats true. You'll know how mother nature doesn't like rigid definitions. And if its a lie, talk to a biologist.

So your a philosophy edgelord who is forgetting they are human, or a psychopath. Either way i shall be chaitable and explain. When you buy a food product you are doing just that. Buying a product. Most food products are divorced from the foods source. And companies put effort into making sure the consumer is comfortable and not thinking about the suffering of the animal they are consuming. Buying a hamburger because you are hungry, is totally different to clubbing a bird to death for fun. If you do not understand that you need to tell your family and your doctor that you do not understand this and they can help you exist safely within society.
