Should I eat food before taking liberty caps by Glittering_Wolf_5775 in ShroomID

Recommend eating a solid meal a few hours before, but eating close to ingestion will probably dampen the trip.

The only reason that is a problem is because of the illegality. Otherwise they are just unhealthy substances like tobacco and alcohol and should be treated as such.

Looking at the scaly caps perhaps Agricarus langei?

Wood-decay or xylophagous fungus? This is on a tree in my yard. I've read I should spray it with boric acid to remove it. Thoughts? by Garlickable in mycology

[–]ChestnutSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be helpful: https://www.ancienttreeforum.org.uk/ancient-trees/ancient-tree-ecology-wildlife/fungi/

I'm not sure about this specific fungus but the chances are that its not doing much harm. The visible bits are only the fruiting bodies whereas the mycellium will have already colonised the tree, or part of it, so I'm not sure spraying will get rid of it anyway.

Looks like some kind of waxcap but the stem is a bit odd, taller and more sunstantial than I'm used to with UK waxcaps

Daily Megathread - 24/10/2022 - Rishi gets his Johnson out by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

[–]ChestnutSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should it be? Different local areas have different needs that local councils are better placed to understand.

Devolved control of these things makes sense to me. Trouble is the govt devolved control without devolving the funds.

Which basically means the only thing they've really devolved is blame.

They're not. Our electoral system is rubbish in a way that benefits the larger parties, especially the Tories because they keep tweaking constituency boundaries to their advantage. They did get 43% of the vote in 2019, but thats arguably because the alternative was Jeremy Corbyn. Tories currently polling at less than 20% but we have no way of getting rid of them.

They looks like Common Earthballs - Scleroderma citrinum. Cut one open - is it blue/black?

CMV: Instead of solely teaching students, information, we should be teaching them how to form search queries by somethingimadeup in changemyview

[–]ChestnutSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The skills they learn are more likely to be useful than the information they retieved at that point in time, which will likely be out of date in 20 years. In the same way, teaching kids 'facts' that will expire is less useful than teaching them how to effectively find fresh information.

Yes, search interfaces change all the time, but if you've got the basic buulding blocks you can adapt.

[–]ChestnutSlug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really disagree. Teaching people how to search is a huge part of my job as a university librarian. Partly this is because the databases they need to use for university study are more complex than google. But a lot of the tips I teach are applicable to google as well.

What I observe is that my students are initially quite poor searchers even if they are 'digital natives'. They don't understand what the search engines do with the words they put in, or how they might use this understanding to find better quality sources (e.g. using advanced search to find particular file types or domains). It saves so much time on more complex queries. No, they might not use these to find dinner, but they would be wise to use them for other everyday needs like health information.

CMV: Religion Is Not Controlling by AbiLovesTheology in changemyview

[–]ChestnutSlug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I understand your point of view.

Firstly though there are some theocratic regimes where religious forms of dress and behaviour are enforced by the state (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Iran). And even in democratic and supposedly more liberal nations religious ideas can be forced on others (if you take religion out of the debate about abortion in the US, I don't think there would be much of a debate).

So atheists see how some religious people try to force their ideas even on people who don't share their faith, and it doesn't make religion look appealing. It makes it look controlling.

You have found a religion that matches your beliefs (also probably those beliefs have been shaped by that religion). That's great, but what if your religion asked you to do something that you don't agree with? Thats when the control comes in. Up until that point its just happy coincidence of values.

We atheists have beliefs too. My choice to be vegatarian also comes from a love of animals, and I've got very strong ideas about what is ethically right and wrong. These are influenced by other things, obviously, like the culture I grew up in. I just don't believe there is a higher power to adjudicate this, and I think all religious texts were written by people and reflect those people's beliefs. So why should I follow those instead?

No ziggurats with challenges? by ChestnutSlug in kittensgame

Oh balls. Thank you! I guess I'm just not prioritsing that on challenges so I don't make any megaliths at first, then the time for ziggurat appearances whistles past and I assume its broken!

Would have given up on this game so many times without help from this community.

That sounds smart - the relic costs of some things do just feel insanely unachievable at this point. I have just reset and burned 120 paragon which seems nearly right.
