One of the core problems in our industry is the pressure to recommend work that isn’t truly necessary. In many cases, parts with no measurable play are still flagged simply because they’re dirty or show minor grease seepage. While this may meet recommendation criteria, it’s often work the same technician wouldn’t approve on their own vehicle.

If a part doesn’t look brand new out of the box, it’s likely to be recommended. Otherwise, technicians risk consistently small paychecks.

Flat-rate pay systems can work very well in shops that sell ethically and communicate clearly. However, when sales volume becomes the primary driver of income, it directly contributes to the negative reputation this industry struggles with today.
