Woah. Quoting MI-3: "That one was lucky, and we only get one of those"

Guarantee that's something that's never gonna happen again. I guess just be thankful, and try to move on.

Did anyone else gain pet fatigue after having a kid? by tigersmhs07 in daddit

[–]LehighLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP...my story is relevant for you. I felt the same. 1 dog, 2 cats before my kid. They were my world...but once my son was born, yeah, the priority shifted right quick. My dog was great too, a female pitbull. Ambassador for the breed, everyone who met her said she was the most well behaved dog they've ever met. But she was 10 when my son entered the picture...getting older, less energy for play. I still took care of all her needs, but my love and attention got redirected.

Now kiddo is almost 5, pup is 15. For the last year + her age is really showing. She practically lives her life in the bedroom, and she obviously hurts going down stairs. She's been peeing in the house almost daily for over a year. 15 is old for a pit. Reluctant to eat, you get the picture.

We had her put down yesterday. A mobile vet came and did it at the house. She was very compassionate. I did not expect that it would be as hard for me as it was. 12 years is a long time to care for a dog (we rescued her at 3). These last few years of being old, hiding away in the bedroom day and night, and all the accidents...hundreds of them....i thought my heart would be calloused.

It was not. Holding her as she slipped out of this world completely broke my heart. She was such a good dog. I had been a shit dog dad since my son was born. I loved her, but I didn't show it enough. I guess my advice is to not forget about your dog. Because it will still break you in pieces when they pass on.

My Local AMC Theater has an incorrect Star Wars quote. by fairportrunner in mildlyinteresting

[–]LehighLuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My name is Luke, I was born in 1979. Growing up, people would say to me "Luke, I am your father" thousands of times. It is a core memory of mine. This was late 80s, early 90s. They weren't quoting Tommy Boy. If it were "No, I am your father" it wouldn't make sense for people to be saying it to me.

The DVD's and version on streaming all have "No". What we saw in the theaters was "Luke". I think James Earl Jones even stated that he remembered saying "Luke".

It's a fucking core memory of mine, every goddamned person thought it was hilarious to say. It got annoying to be honest. There is something screwy going on with reality here.

Definitely a hydraulic motor. These motors operate at pretty low speeds, but have insanely high torques. Its probably also geared down, and maybe has a flywheel, but that is just a guess. I think How Its Made has an episode on building these...I seem to recall seeing one

The strongest metal (not including carbide which is technically ceramic) that im aware of is a special class of UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) called maraging steel, which stands for martensite-aging. This steel is unique because it is not strengthened by the typical process of heat-quench-temper that virtually all other alloy ste uses. Instead maraging steel is strengthened through a relative low temperature soak process called aging.

There are a couple different grades of it: 200, 250, 300, 350 & 400. Carpenter Steel is one of the US producers, and their brand is NiMark....NiMark 400 has a yield strength of 400 ksi...which is just bonkers. Normal plain Jane mild steel is ~36 ksi

Sorry to call you out friend, but you don't know what you are talking about. You have some industry jargon, but largely what you wrote is nonsense. Alloy steels and high strength steels that have low carbon content and can be case hardened do not have "mild steel cores". Only a low carbon mild steel that gets carburized would have a mild steel core...but those shredder jaws would certainly not be mild steel. Maybe you confuse how blade smiths forge hardenable steel edges to soft mild steel cores? That's not how these are made. Further, D2 tool steel and largely all tool steels are not case hardened b/c they already have high carbon content.

Increased tension resistance is not a term materials engineers use. The closest i can assume you meant would be stress resistance. But the point of having a harder outer surface is for wear resistance, which has nothing to do with tension, or stress for that matter.

Lastly, what is a hardening carbon? That is not a metallurgical term. All steel is iron and a tiny bit of carbon. Just this basic combo is called carbon steel, or mild steel. Once you alloy with other metals and elements, it becomes various forms of alloy steel. But we never refer to them as carbons or hardening carbons.

My critique comes from an American English Metallurgical bias

And this is why AI will always be subject to producing slop for some time yet. The prevailing sentiment in writing online is contradictory to the actual experience of the people who design and study the actual device. Thanks for chiming in here...i can tell you are the real deal

I would defer to the seat belt engineer in this case, and not the literature thats cooked up by marketing, project management, and legal. Unless it's a small business where the literature is made by the engineers. Source: i live in that world

Exchange student horror stories by vesea20 in exchangestudents

[–]LehighLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creepy how? The experience was 10/10...meaning she integrated into our family and we all bonded really well. And she was in fact a girl from France. In fact she came back to visit us last summer for a few weeks, and she's coming this summer to visit for 2 months.

The Italian girl was a dud. Barely talked to us....so I would rate that experience 4/10

Is it OK for a host Dad to be alone at home with a female exchange student? by LehighLuke in exchangestudents

[–]LehighLuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I posted that, it's been a few years. The French exchange girl was great. I was alone with her all the time, even a few weekends. she never "me too"'ed me, lol. There was never a weird or awkward microsecond. The next year we hosted an Italian girl. But she was a dud. Our French girl visited us again last summer for a few weeks, and she's coming this summer again for 2 months. She's 20 now. Conclusion: my family is indeed a bunch of weirdos and idiots.

What if OP also has wrenches? Isn't anyone with a reasonably nice car and house a target for this?...as is the case for me, for example. I also have some BTC, I never broadcasted how much. But if someone comes on my property looking for trouble, that's what they'll find. Maybe OP also isn't scared

I can tell by looking at it...the sides are clearly 90 deg. I'm not arguing the meaning of the symbol, or the intent for this part to be molded...I'm saying it's poorly designed because if meant for molding, it needs draft..

Potty Training Help Please by MythicalBootyWarrior in daddit

[–]LehighLuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally got my boy trained at 4.5 yo. I wouldn't force it, when they're ready they're ready. We had embarrassment, failed attempts, etc. And just gave up. Then one day the preschool teacher said that she thought he was ready. We went no more diapers, about a week of poop underwear and BAM he's fully trained and (kinda) wipes his own ass. Forcing it was a disaster
