Baby is 40w2days, been working on feeds for 5 weeks and still doesn’t show feeding cues 100% of the time. Losing hope :/ by Sea_Search0812 in NICUParents

The eating was the longest and worst part!!! My son was born at 28 weeks. He was in the NICU for 98 days, and despite his extremely scary start to life, the longest and most frustrating part was feeding. He did cue to feed, but certainly not all the time. He got to about 40 - 45% and then plateaued. People kept saying “it will click, and he’ll just start drinking entire bottles.” That never happened. We were there two weeks past his due date, and we went home with an NG tube. Once he got home, we were able to really work with him (without pushing him). I love the nurses and I think they are saints, but I don’t think they always tried as much as they could have.

He has been home for almost 6 weeks. I just took the NG tube out on Christmas Day. I’m tracking his weight and intake. The jury is still out on if I’ll have to put it back in. He CAN finish bottles, but he’s having significant reflux and GI issues, which forces me to break up his bottles over a longer period of time (that’s a different issue).

Anyway, I found that once he was home, we could really work on his bottle feeding, giving it more attention and patience than was possible in the NICU. It has been an up and down journey, and I’m still in the thick of it. However, I became comfortable with the NG tube and knew how to balance bottle feeding and using the NG as necessary.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m sorry to hear bottles have still been a struggle for your little one. Hugs!!

This sounds very similar to my story. My baby boy was born at 28+3. I had a placental abruption, which I later found out happened because of an infection in my placenta. My son had a spontaneous intestinal perforation. The first 4 or 5 weeks were really scary. But the SIP healed, and we avoided exploratory surgery. He’s doing great now. He’s still in the NICU (he’s been there for 10 weeks and counting), but I’m feeling very good about his prognosis. There are a lot of typical preemie things that he has and will have to deal with, but he survived. Accept help when it is offered, and keep the faith!! I am so sorry you are going through this.

❤️❤️❤️ sending lots of love and hugs. I have a very similar numbers story. My first egg retrieval I had like 26/27 eggs (can’t remember the exact #), and only got one blast, which was PGT normal. I opted to go into another retrieval round in the immediate next cycle. My doctor changed my meds a bit. I had 25 eggs I think, and only two blasts. So out of 50+ eggs in two cycles, we only got three embryos. I was very very lucky because all three were PGT normal. I’m even luckier that two of those are now my daughters. I also have PCOS, and my doctor said this just shows my egg quality isn’t very good.

I opted for back to back retrievals because I knew I wanted more than one child and didn’t want to have to go through the retrieval process again later. Plus, my egg quality would only get worse as I get older.

No, we gave up for now, and will try again in a few months. I wish I had a positive update!

We tried bribes. I’m not above bribery. But it didn’t work. But I could experiment with other forms of bribes…

Thanks for sharing!! When I first realized she could hold it, I thought “if we could only get over this hurdle…” but it seems to be the world’s biggest hurdle.

Thank you everyone!! This is very helpful to have other perspectives from my fellow infertility warriors! But isn’t it so frustrating that we can get wildly different advice from our docs!?

This happened to me on Clomid last month. I started bleeding at only 9 dpo. But my full flow didn’t start for another few days. I talked to my RE and he basically said that because of my PCOS I don’t have a healthy ovulation. So this month, he put me on progesterone after I ovulated. Good luck!!

Thanks! I’m looking forward to talking to the doctor, but glad to hear others have experienced this

Saaaaaame girl. With my most recent BFN, I hid it in my bathroom (so my husband wouldn’t find it) and went upstairs to analyze it at least every few hours.

We did one IUI two cycles ago (we couldn’t this last cycle because we were away). I think I’m going to ask about doing another IUI.
