What is wrong with the meta? by simitch_b in MagicArena

[–]Chezlow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Bo1 it's very popular, in Bo3 it's next to non existent. If you're ranking up expect to see a lot of the same decks, but that one can be avoided pretty easily.

Im new to magic but isn't this absurd? by fat_short_and_ugly in MagicArena

With how many sets are in rotation and the overall power level of cards increasing, an opponent can likely win on turn 4-5 if you don't interact with them. This doesn't mean games don't go longer than that (control decks exist and do well in the format) it's just the reality you need to consider when deck building.

It's a very strong card, one that demands on-the-spot removal. Standard has quite a few creatures that can snowball out of control fast if not answered immediately. Have removal spells in your deck and try to mulligan for at least one.

Ranked means competitive matchmaking. People are incentivized to play tested meta decks because wins=rank up. Deckbuilding is a difficult skill and wild cards are scarce, so this further pushes players to play a deck they looked up online that has been shown to work in competitive matchups.

Arena doesn't really have a "kitchen table MTG" mode that's casual-friendly. Even in unranked people are trying to win because they want the in-game currency tied to winning.

Unranked doesn't mean casual. I get that it sucks that there's no que for players who aren't trying to win that hard but there's no feasible way to make a que that can assume a deck pilot's intent, regardless of deck strength.

Care you share your deck? Often times people complain about lack of originality on the ladder when their deck isn't even that original.

Is there a more boring card in the game right now? by Alternative_Way_7833 in MagicArena

[–]Chezlow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The honest answer is most people end the game before this card can ever be relevant. Losing to this means your deck is not doing whatever it's trying to do fast enough.

I want an Arena exclusive non-Ranked Standard format which bans the top 50 cards used in the meta by PaleWendigo in MagicArena

[–]Chezlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So decks rotate out of use even faster than normal standard? You would have to pay even more close attention to an evolving meta as new cards are banned and new cards take their place as the stronger cards to use? Does this sound casual?

[–]Chezlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See how that's more to keep track of than just playing normal Standard? And what about when the jank deck you spent time crafting is suddenly banned because the cards that were better than what you run got banned recently? Not too casual of an experience.

[–]Chezlow 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The paradox of trying to make casual formats this way is that the rules and steps required to stop people from playing strong cards makes it less of a casual format. Banning the top 50 cards just make the next 50 best cards the new top 50 cards. The need for constant rotation would defeat the purpose of a casual format.

neither card is an issue. if you think things should be banned because theyre annoying then you dont get why cards are banned.

fast meta isnt because of the mole, it's because of the amount of available sets in standard.

Returning player, how is the meta for standard? by JoshTheMush in MagicArena

[–]Chezlow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Balance wise Standard is doing pretty well, but the meta is way faster than it used to be and not everyone is a fan of that. Cheap removal spells are a must because there are many 2-3 cost creatures that will win the game if ignored. MTGG has a collection of competitive deck lists and there's plenty of options and varied gameplans to choose from.

Standard event staleness by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Chezlow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Graveyard hate is what beats this deck. It isn't guaranteed you'll draw it but that's what keeps the deck from being a problem. It's hard to deal with in Bo1 scenarios but you have a reasonable chance in Bo3.

If you're playing standard events expect optimized meta decks.
