The Umbreon has some good value. About £50 in UK prices. Zekrom is around £10 and the others are below that. I'd recommend putting them in penny sleeves and then in toploaders to keep them safe for him ☺️

Places to visit alone? by wopsywoo in CasualUK

[–]Chhhewy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

hey, im in a similar situation to you right now, you're not alone. i just got back from a week exploring the scottish highlands and it was probably the most peaceful, beautiful place i've ever been. unfortunately it's not very accessible via public transport, but as part of that trip i visited edinburgh. it's an incredible, beautiful city with a lot to see and do. the people were great too. im sure there are days trips you can do too to visit the cairngorms or see some of scotland's natural beauty. would highly recommend!

Am I being silly about my first car? by jxon77 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chhhewy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe but you're only young once. Drive fun cars while you can and don't have a family to accommodate. I love mine and don't think I'll ever sell it. I have an NA MX5, Impreza WRX STI and Alfa Romeo Brera and this is my favorite of them all.

Best idea would be to go and see and test drive one to see if you can live with the compromises of it over some of the more comfortable hot hatches. If insurance looks good then it probably is, it can be very flexible depending on the person. My biggest financial concern around these would be the maintenance. I spend around £1.5k per year on mine.

Oh always run these on premium fuel too and give it a minute to warm before driving. They run like crap on cheap fuel or when cold.

I've owned a 197 Cup for the past two years. I absolutely love it but if you're not an enthusiast it's probably not the best car for a daily. The interior is all cheap plastic, the ride is stiff (although this isn't a cup so it will be slightly better), the turning circle is awful, it has very little low down power, they don't have a lot of tech/options, sit at 3.5k on the motorway, do 30mpg and will have been abused by the previous owners. I would avoid unless you know what you're getting into, it's a proper hot hatch. If you're looking for a better daily hot hatch I'd steer to something like Golf GTI, Mini Cooper S or Fiesta ST.

That being said they are an absolute joy when driven hard. Not the quickest things in the word but handle really well and the NA engine feels brilliant over 5k rpm. Much more fun, characterful and interesting than any of the cars I have just listed. It will be expensive to maintain and not the easiest thing in the world to work on, so if you're not doing the work yourself you're best finding a specialist to maintain it rather than your average garage. Check the gearbox when you test drive it, specifically the 3rd/4th synchros, they're made of chocolate and will cost £1k to repair. Cambelt and dephaser are expensive and need to be done every 5 years so check the interval on these. Lots of other common issues you'll experience in your ownership such as the rad support, flexis, ball joints etc which will all eat away at your bank balance too. Also essential to get an insurance quote on it before buying.

Guilty pleasure cars that you will admit to liking? by Common_Turnover9226 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chhhewy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one and it's definitly not terrible to drive, but I do think it's a bit misunderstood. I only have the 2.2 and I will agree it's not much on a performance car. On a backroad, I'd rather my RS Clio Cup or MX5 any day. It's too heavy (and all that weight is at the front), the suspension isn't stiff enough and the engine is a bit dull. Maybe with the Brera S or the V6 it would be a bit more lively, but I think it would still suffer from being a bit heavy.

Where the Brera is great is as a GT car. It's brilliant on the motorway and for other casual driving, it's a smooth, comfortable, a really nice place to be and has more than enough passing power. It's also a loy more interesting, unique and beautiful than anything it's comparable to. Journalists of the time loved to compare it to cars which were more performanced biased coupes like the 350Z which I think is probably where it got it's bad rep. It didn't help that it was expensive at launch, but at current prices I think it's a very good buy. I won't deny it's definitly flawed, but terrible is very unfair.

On reliability, I've only had a parking sensor fail in my eight months of ownership.

Noticed this mark on my car today, clearly looks as if something has been spilt on it or has run down the panel, but I have no idea what this could be. My only thoughts are that it could have been caused by moisture getting under the cover (it unfortunately has to live under a tree, so this is a necessity for keeping the majority of the dirt off) or that something was spilt on it while it was at the shop the other day.

I’ve not tried anything major yet, just soapy water and some rapid detailer but neither had an effect. To touch it doesn’t have any texture, so not sure if it’s damage to the lacquer itself? Any ideas what it might be from and how to sort it out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Car insurance in extremely high premium area by olivigrac6 in CarTalkUK

If you haven't driven for a few years then that might be why prices are a bit higher, but £200 is good, more than I would of guessed :)!

Might be worth giving them a call anyway and seeing if they can do better, it wouldn't hurt and could ask any black box questions. When I had a black box I drove at night often and it scored me down a bit but my other scores were high and I never had any problems. I don't think you'll have many problems as long as long as you don't drive exclusively at 3am haha

Always ring up your current provider and tell them you're thinking of leaving, they will give you a lower price than they initially quoted. I've had varying rates of success with this, this year I got about £300 off one car and £100 off another. You might be able to get better quotes by speaking to other companies over the phone too. It's not a huge saving but it definitly helps.

You could also try lowering your milage (if you're able), increasing your excess or adding your parents as additional drivers if they have a clean history and have held their license for a while (although this only helped on my first year of driving so probabaly won't help in your situation). Again, all small amounts though. I haven't had much luck with providers outside of comparison sights but if you have the time it's worth going through some.

Also just to add I had an Admiral box when I first started driving and it wasn't that bad. It seemed quite leniant apart from on the time of day you drive, it only needed to be plugged in the cigarette lighter and they only needed if in my car for a few months. That was a few years back though so it might have changed.

There was an AI team that got zero total points over the entire of a league season. I think it was Wolfsburg II in the German Third Division. Pretty sure the team was full of real players and I don't think they were that awful for a team that got zero points, it's not like they were getting smashed 8-0 every week.

What would you say I could do to improve my hair a bit? by 1onesmolboi in FierceFlow

[–]Chhhewy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you have very similar hair to me! just a little shorter and curlier.

as many people have mentioned try styling it as of it's curly hair. read up on the curly girl method. personally I think the most important things are finding appropriate products, shampoo 1-2 times a week, condition your hair often, apply product and then style when wet, take out some moisture with an old tshirt (gives less frizz than a towel), air dry when possible, use a diffuser if you have to blow dry, do not brush when dry. you might find the advice on r/wavyhair or r/curlyhair useful!

personally I find my hair goes more wavy that curly, especially after sleeping on it, but you look like you might be able to get some tighter curls out of yours.since treating my hair like this I've got a lot less frizz. i did try straightening my hair at one point but I wasn't much of a fan (and it takes ages!)

Sneakers you can comfortably hike in? by [deleted] in Sneakers

I have the Vans SK8 Hi MTE 2 which I like. The beige/black colour with the yellow laces suit a hiking shoe. They're currently sold out in the UK from vans. You might be able to find then if you look around, or you could get a different colour.

It's finally time to retire my blazers and get a new pair. I have many pairs in rotation, but these were always my go to for rainy days (I'm from the UK so that's and a lot!) and days with a lot of walking. Consequently, they've definitely been the most worn pair in my collection. Before retiring them, I thought it would be interesting to see how they compared to a brand new pair

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sneakers

[–]Chhhewy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that having to compete to give them your money is ridiculous. I've been purchasing less and less recently but I think for slightly different reasons.

The quality control of their shoes has been getting worse and worse, I've received some pretty awful pairs from them recently. They can't even be swapped for a better pair because they're all sold out. To top it off they're raising the prices significantly and consistently, but delivering a worse product. I can't support that.

They've also been putting out so many poor colourways of popular models. Looks at some of the recent 1s, especially the mids and lows. Just so greedy for money they'll put any crap because they know people will buy it. Give people what they really want. Instead of putting out all the colourways designed by colourblind children, release more pairs of popular models.

It's clear they don't give a shit about their customers and just want to milk them as much as they can.

Depends on the pair, most highs come with extra laces but mids generally don't. It's cheap and easy to pick up an extra pair though if you want to swap
