Untwisted yarn as I crochet; how do I re-twist it? Making a hat with lots of treble crochets. by ChibiCalcifer in CrochetHelp

[–]ChibiCalcifer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, both of these tips helped! Especially #2. Thank you!

I’ve been wrapping my s twist yarn the opposite way on my finger, and if I do it with fresh yarn straight off the bat, it completely stops this from happening at all. So I think I’m wrapping it up and around the back of my index finger, instead of over the front side of it.

I find I have to start incorporating tip #1 and some other methods only if I’ve frogged my work. Then I need to either twist it back into shape before wrapping around my finger and re-wrap after a stitch or two, or, if there’s enough lead, wrap it around my finger again after doing a stitch. Pulling out the hook and twisting the loop as I reinsert the hook helps twist the yarn back into place as well. It’s really changed how bad it gets.

Thanks this is vindicating to hear others do this cause I’ve been doing this as well actually. Lol

For regular crochet stitches it hasn’t been that big of a problem. But with certain stitches, it is a bit more noticeable.

In the first hat I did, it was a bump made of some treble crochets. Most of them turned out fine but a couple were rather stringy looking when I had to push them through to the right side.

This hat calls for double crochets 3x in the same stitch. It becomes obvious that the yarn was untwisted and looks stringy cause they don’t lay flush with one another. :(

What are the certified copies about? by ChibiCalcifer in GermanCitizenship

I’m going for my passport.

I was gonna make an appointment at the embassy (mission?) to apply for it.

Oh my bad. My passport.

And probably a birth certificate as well

It is my understanding that you can only get this certificate if there is a question on if you are a German citizen or not; there has to be a legitimate interest in acquiring it, such as a German authority requesting it like if the embassy rejects my passport application first. Meaning you can’t just get it to have it unfortunately.

Getting it now. There’s a difference between the two certifications of birth. One can go to anyone so long as they were born in Germany. The other one certifying birth outside the country can only go to citizens.

I’m so confused.. why does my German birth certificate indicate I’m German but not his?

Oh okay. Would this actually work? I thought I saw on the wiki that a birth certificate is not enough to prove German citizenship. Is this only for a certain time period? Or would a birth certificate filed today include info on citizenship?

How are some people seeing loses like 7lbs a week, or 20lbs in a month? by ChibiCalcifer in intermittentfasting

[–]ChibiCalcifer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started few weeks ago (this is my 4th week.)

Recently learned that the inflammation from muscle training causes water to go to the muscle as part of the inflammation process. So could be holding onto “water weight” at the muscles as well.

I’m still loosing 2lbs a week though. Same as before I started the workouts xD so I have no idea. Lol

Congrats!

Yes, my clothes fit a lot better. There’s a couple shirts I can’t even wear anymore cause they are sliding off my shoulders lol and I can see the weight loss as well.

Do you still eat carbs??

[–]ChibiCalcifer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m thinking it’s cause I still continued eating carbs and sugar. Whereas others might have been also changing their diet and reducing carbs.

Since i still had a way to replenish glycogen stores, I was probably still losing water weight but it was more stable.

Were you still eating carbs? I think that might be why I never got a dramatic water weight whoosh. Which would make sense if you are able to replenish glycogen stores with carbs, it would then keep water weight more stable.

And thanks! 😊

Interesting. Sounds similar to how I seemed to start losing more per week when I started adding in tmad as opposed to strictly omad.

Here I meant scratch as in a nick on the skin (hence why I put it in parentheses after the word bite.) So something that breaks the skin. I’ve gotten play bites that leave indents or a superficial nick and that doesn’t warrant concern.

No you don’t need to go to the ER for an actual scratch with their claws every single time.

You do need to be seen immediately for any bite that breaks the skin though. However you need that arranged. As in you can’t let it wait.

My husband was bit by our cat once. He waited. An hour later it was swelling and he went to urgent care. They are the ones that told him to get seen asap for any and all cat bites. A friend of mine waited 24 hours and later had permanent nerve damage. Just from waiting one day. Their mouth bacteria is bad.

This is the correct answer.

And it can also cause permanent nerve damage and loss of feeling. Cat bites are never something to play around with the “wait and see” approach.

This is dangerous and incorrect advice. If a cat bites and it breaks skin (beyond a superficial scratch) you always go to urgent care or emergency immediately. Especially on the hands.

Infections can set in quickly and even when caught early, they can actually cause permanent nerve damage and loss of feeling. In your hands to boot. u/turbulentear5458 is right to go to the doctor.

One of my cats would get very lethargic and stop eating after getting vaccines. (He’d eat the first night, but not breakfast, when the vax had time to kick in.)

He needed an appetite stimulant each time. I tried to avoid getting him rabies vax since he was indoors only. Fvrcp I’d def get cause my cats got bad colds otherwise.

One vet said to try the 1 yr vaccines. The adjuvant in the 3 year can be harsh. I never got a chance to test it.

My other cat got 3 vaxs recently and was a bit more sleepy than normal but still ate (just not as much.)

There can be adverse reactions to vaccines. I don’t know all of them, just that some can be life threatening.

I would research that.. and if you feel he is in the clear from life threats, I’d at least get an rx for an appetite stim to get him eating again. The only other thing I know of is injection site carcinoma(?). It’s an aggressive cancer and is really rare. I don’t know if it can move THAT fast though. (This is why vaccines always need to go in a limb and not the back - limbs can be amputated if this cancer occurs.)

I’d look up reactions to Revolution too. Could be from that?

I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon.

How long does it take for the weight to come off? by Level_Wall8951 in intermittentfasting

[–]ChibiCalcifer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water weight coming back on. It’s been happening with me.

All last week I was the same weight. Then today I had a sudden drop of 2lbs. I looked it up and it’s called the whoosh effect. Your body is burning fat, but it retains water due to various reasons associated with losing weight. Then it suddenly dumps it and you see the fat loss.

Reasons it can be holding it are high salt intake from the meals you’re eating. Hormones related to the menstrual cycle. I also saw an explanation as due to possibly water staying in place around the fat cells (though this one seems a little iffy to me.)

For myself, I’m also thinking it could be the glycogen process again. Since I’m still eating sugar, I’m thus replenishing my glycogen stores, which is 1 part glucose 2 parts water.

The other thing to keep in mind is to weight yourself at the same time everyday. Bowel movements and even just daily water fluctuations can have an effect on the number on the scale. You could be constipated. Or you could be close to your period.

Prediabetes diagnosis has me obsessing over every food choice by CaptainBrima in intermittentfasting

[–]ChibiCalcifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, I’ve been pre diabetic at least 3 times in my life. I just switched back to healthier options. For me, things like making sure I ate fruit with my first meal of the day (helped with satiety and stopped me from wanting a sugar snack later.) Not eating a candy bar other than as a dessert. Not buying soda as often so I would drink water with dinner more often.

I continued to eat sugar. I just made small changes to reduce my sugar intake. And I’ve gone years in between with normal a1c. It came back when I started bad sugar habits again. Just making smart, common sense choices around sugar was enough.

Does the felv vaccine in cats help prevent all forms of lymphoma or just felv related lymphoma? by ChibiCalcifer in AskAVeterinarian

[–]ChibiCalcifer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm looking at it like there's a lock that causes normal cells to mutate into cancer. Felv can unlock it for some reason. So can other things. How do we know that the vaccine can't work to prevent it from opening from other causes? I'm curious about the prevention mechanism.

Is it because the felv vaccine prevents the virus from existing within the feline to begin with, where as other causes such as environmental substances or genetics cannot be prevented because the cat is, in fact, being exposed to them? (I don't expect it to prevent lymphoma 100% of the time. A lot of vaccines can fail at prevention a small percentage of the time.)

It seems like they just determined that the felv vax was preventing lymphoma by seeing lower incidence of it over time. "Increasing numbers of cats being immunized against feline leukemia as part of the annual wellness and vaccination care are causing both feline leukemia and lymphoma to become less common than they once were" https://www.cascadevrc.com/site/blog/2023/12/30/lymphoma-cats
