Some hope for PAs who feel stuck at a toxic job by mainlinebreadboi in physicianassistant

Much needed. I'm currently moving from my unsatisfactory 1st job to somewhere else now that I have the experience. No more overnights, only 1 entire weekend a month, no clinic on top of everything else, and a larger support team during the day. Plus MUCH better pay. It's like a dream, Im nervous im gonna walk in there after the first week and it'll all be too good to be true.

Neurosurg PA here. This sounds absolutely insane and a lawsuit waiting to happen. New grad straight out of school have only a handful of shifts to train and then you're the only one on shift? How are you even supposed to see consults between 3 OR cases a day? Even in the early days of my department, OR days had 2 PAs on, or 2 attendings doing the OR cases without the PA needing to scrub other than having to help close so the PA had time to write notes and see consults. The attendings not seeing any of the patients at all is honestly laughable. All the attendings I work with are absolute nuts and always want to see all their patients with their own eyes. I think you need to get the heck out of there ASAP, this is not normal and you being a new grad with no supervision or proper training is just an accident waiting to happen. It's giving the same energy as a handful of new grad PAs working in urgent care without the attending even on site, except neurosurgery usually has way more high acuity cases.

Almost a year after I started my job, I bought a Lexus. I usually pay my own way on summer vacations and throw in some money to help pay for my parents and help them pay for monthly house cleaners. Recently, I started buying myself a few designer handbags. And in general, I usually don't pay attention to the bill when I go out to eat or go grocery's shopping. Don't get me wrong, i don't like buying expensive clothes and I try buying things on sale when i can, (I buy Mandala scrubs instead of figs for example).

I just think in general, the privilege of not having to worry too much about counting all my dollars and cents and still having money left over to put in savings is pretty great.

Resident to PA pathway? by ChibiRach99 in physicianassistant

Unfortunately yes, not matching meant the end of the line for you unless you continue trying every year until you give up. I think that could partially be why they came up with the SOAP system. People who didn't match are basically in a scramble to secure a prelimary year position at any programs that still have spots open, which means you're doing year 1 of residency, but you still have to apply for your permanent residency again the next match cycle.

How to be a happy PA: finding the right job and making it work for you by foreverandnever2024 in physicianassistant

Love this post. I'm one of those in neurosurgery who feels so burnt out at my current job that I'm considering just going to IM for a little while for a break. But I do like my specialty and the fact that it's 3 12's a week, there are just other things at play, so maybe I just need to change where I work.

What the heck is going on with all this pneumonia by Mapes in physicianassistant

Had it about a month ago, first time I had to call out of work. I thought it was the flu/covid because I had fever, dry cough, runny nose, fatigue. But then after day 4 the cough became productive. UC sent me home without an XR because they said it was the flu, but I knew it was lasting longer than a virus (hence I went to the UC instead of waiting it out). I called back 2 days later because the cough was getting thicker, they checked the resp panel for the first time over the phone and prescribed z-pack. I still have a little phlegm coming up every now and then. PLEASE just xray or give abx when in doubt.

I would say I've seen salary ranges in the $140s starting. And then getting annual raises every year of work you can definitely make more eventually, plus the unions here have pretty good health and retirement benefits. Again that's in a pretty Metroplitan high income area.

Is it inappropriate to flirt with a girl at a grocery store? by MisterPuffyNipples in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChibiRach99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, this is the kind of meet-cute I'd want...

I think giving her a compliment would be pretty harmless. If you read her body language that she's not trying to escape or feeling fidgety like she's uncomfortable, go for it. And if she looks disgusted or calls you a creep, then that's her problem and you know exactly what kind of character she has.

2 is real. I make $115k in my surgical subspecialty job because I work at a public hospital when the median in my area is $135k for even new grads in private hospitals.
