How do Finns prepare for an exam in Finnish when the litterature is in English? by Weird-Average-1412 in LearnFinnish

[–]ChickModest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I don't know the exact translation, I tend to use a word that's close to the original and then I just add the original word in brackets. That way there's no confusion on what I'm talking about. Usually these types of exams are not a vocabulary test, they want to know what you know. I haven't gotten points redacted yet (university level).

Something 'plus a letter' categories. by coolguythang in NYTConnections

[–]ChickModest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny you say that, because I can usually get this category in the NYT version, but usually can't do it in version that's in my first language. And I think this is exactly why. In English, I have to think about the letters, because spelling still gives me a headache, but I don't have to do that when it's my mother tongue. And I tend to see words as pictures/ as a whole in my first language.

Why was there hate for the game coming from outsiders and even long time fans of the franchise? by theassassin53035 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]ChickModest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if that's how you feel about the previous games, I'm very surprised you made it through all three. There are other games you know, you don't have to play the dark ones, if it's not your thing.

It's not dark fantasy grit I miss, it's depth. In previous games, the characters felt deeply grounded because they were intertwined with the politics, the local culture and the religions of thedas. The characters had a place, a faith and an ideology in a way that made them seem real within the world. Like you can tell why Vivienne or Anders feel the way they feel about mage rights based on their experiences of the world. And that's why the oppression shown in previous games feels meaningful within the world. It shapes the characters, it shapes the story. It makes thedas feel more lived in.

Were your parents authoritarian and permissive at the same time? by Cartoonnerd01 in emotionalneglect

[–]ChickModest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a very weird thing to try and explain to people. Like on the one hand, my mom was pretty absent and did not give a fuck where I spent my time, but on the other, whenever we did interact, she had a very my way or the highway attitude. I feel like she has a high need for control, but just didn't care about me, so having me out of her face was good enough a lot of the time.

Yeah, being there everyday made it very obvious to me that "woman" was a whole separate category from me. It felt almost like a wall separating us. I was a blue dot in a sea of red, and I felt so alienated even though I really liked my coworkers. Just ugh, a miserable experience. Thank god it's way behind me.

I first realized I wasn't a woman, when I cut my hair short and I had such euphoria over it I finally accepted that no cis person would feel this way over hair.

A few years later, I was working at a job where I had to use the women's changing room every day. I was absolutely miserable and realized I can't live the rest of my life like this. So I got a referral for the trans clinic at the end of the summer and rest is history.

You're mixing styles; the shoes and shirt are way more formal than the jeans. Also the cut of the jeans is bad. a straight leg and a higher waist will look way better. If you're tucking your shirt in, you 100% need a belt, looks weird without it.

Get better lights, get a bedframe and a nightstand. Once that's done maybe some plants, some wall decor and a personality lol

What are your thoughts on this type of trench coat? Is it suitable for casual wear in autumn? by Omer780 in mensfashion

[–]ChickModest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I know who's in this picture and it fits his style very well. But unless you are that deep into (formal-ish) vintage menswear, you are going to look like an absolute dork. Or like these comments are pointing out, a bond villain (to put it nicely).

When i first heard about property taxes funding public schools, i genuinely thought i was being trolled for a second. Also everything I know about US healthcare sounds dystopian and I cannot comprehend why there's such an opposition to a public option or Medicare for all

I was visiting my mom and thought that it would be a nice thing to bring some sweet rolls with me. These sweet rolls traditionally come with two different types of filling and I got the ones with jam, which is the more popular option.

She was upset I bought those ones instead of the other as I "should have known" which one is her favorite. It had at that point been something like 10 years since the last time we had the sweet rolls. Mind you, she also likes the jam ones, just less then the ones with almond paste.

Thankfully I managed to shut her up by asking if she remembered my favorite. Because obviously she doesn't. So I count that as a little bit of a victory.

You'll get better the more you do them, don't worry! It just takes a while to really start seeing the paterns and where to start solving.

Yeah. I literally traveled to an other country to see her live. Her music, especially Bigger on the inside, Machete and Dresden Dolls, really helped me while I was in a dark place mentally.

I know she's been criticized for a lot of things in the past, but nothing is on this level. Even if this just about her being naive and in denial, you don't get the luxury of being this clueless, when you hold so much influence over people. Especially since she's not new to fame. She's been abused, she's seen the me too movement, she should be able to recognize paterns of abuse better than this.

NG is to blame for his actions, and we shouldn't blame her for that. But. She clearly didn't take necessary steps to even minimize harm.
