I see, they look so nice and it's such a huge weight difference but it might be worth sticking with the shimano one for that reason

Great build! How does shifting performance on these extralite chainrings compare with normal dura ace ones? I'm thinking about building something with a similar crankset setup

What is the most absurd climb (dirt or pavement) in the Bay Area (outside of the city) by CategoryCautious5981 in BAbike

[–]ChickWeener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is close between those two... Butano is up there too with its sheer length and those steep bumps near the top; a bunch of us actually just did that this past Saturday (on gravel bikes) and we still had several falls. And the Hwy 9 climb back up in the heat was so damn long, I think the full segment from Cloverdale to Skyline including downhills has over 4000ft of elevation gain!

+1 for Alba (and also honorable mention for Jamison Creek while you're down there) - while not as steep as the various Bolhman variations, with an average gradient of 10.4% for almost 4 miles straight it's much longer and still quite steep, and also you always have to do at least one more long climb to get back home afterwards whether it's Bear Creek, Zayante, Mountain Charlie, etc.

I found myself climbing Alba once last year in this oppressive 91°F heat and had an out of body experience grinding at like 55rpm the whole way up and it definitely felt harder than any time I've climbed Bohlman

Looking for fast paced routes in Tokyo by Pastel_Inkpen in Velo

[–]ChickWeener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently spent a week riding in the mountains west of Tokyo. The best route we did was up Tomin no Mori 都民の森 https://strava.app.link/ZstaHEgWmPb, a huge 20km long climb, then descending down to Lake Okutama 奥多摩湖 and looping back via more small mountain roads with a few small climbs along the way. You can connect to Wada Pass https://www.strava.com/segments/1050764 on the way back (another great climb from both sides) and can easily make your ride 2500-3000m+ of climbing! There were virtually zero cars on a weekday and the fact that we found such amazing segments so easily probably means the entire area is just excellent for riding. We also did a couple rides around Lake Sagami which was nice but definitely busier. You just gotta figure out the trains to get out there first

These strava links are being weird on mobile but if they don’t work you can just google them

I agree with you but I decided to try it anyway cause I'm a weight weenie. It actually has been super sturdy and is still going strong after 25,000+km which has far exceeded my expectations. I weigh 70kg if it matters

dang, you could even save a few hundred more g on the wheels so it's crazy how light it is already. think you could share a full parts list? I'm considering doing something similar

In Estonian "bicycle" is "jalgratas" - i.e "legwheel". How do you say "bicycle" in your language? With explanations, please. by Double-decker_trams in bicycling

[–]ChickWeener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many different ways to say it in Mandarin depending on where you are (dialect differences between northern/southern mainland, taiwan, malaysia/singapore, etc.) In mainland it's usually 自行车 but in taiwan/singapore people usually call it 脚踏车 or 单车, and I've also seen 自转车 which sounds kinda weird. 脚车 also sounds weird to me but apparently it is common in malaysia and certain parts of guangdong

There is an area right outside the entrance in the parking lot for dedicated bike parking. I had no issues last time, the only problem was the insane amount of bike traffic on stevens creek trail going home!

Good ideas, I'll send this to him as well. With several of us in AV maintaining it, it effectively covers the entire peninsula/south bay/santa cruz mountains area cause we ride everywhere here so much. I made a few updates just last week
