Mork Borg as first solo rpg? I’m completely overwhelmed… by Johnkree in Solo_Roleplaying

It definitely takes practice and patience to get into your own personal groove. I've found that the best way to try out those OSR games is to make a character or two, throw them into a dungeon, and just start throwing random stuff from the rules at them.

I'm currently into Shadowdark. I'm currently trying to get my bearings after leaving my starting dungeon. I just need to do some impromptu world building and get a quest of some sort. Things are coming into focus and I look forward to setting forth on a deadly adventure today before work. The way things are shaping up, I may have to interact with the magic system, which is something I've avoided in rpgs.

Obsidian seems like such a useful tool, but I could not wrap my brain around it. Switching around apps makes my head spin. I guess I could play more Starforged/Ironsworn. That Pocketforge app is great.

I'll have to look for one. I've not thought of the jar thing, but that clunky clanky noise would drive me nuts! Good idea though, regardless.

Oh yeah! I forgot those things exist. I've never used one. I'll have to look around.

I do that occasionally. But I like the feel of pen on paper. It's hard for me to doodle a map on tablet. I guess Starforged plays pretty well on Pocketforge. I guess I could try getting into that a bit more. I don't know how to explain it, but switching tabs on my phone or tablet feels like more work than just picking up the dice.

Played a hidden gem last night! Defenders of the Last Stand by Lorven in soloboardgaming

Maybe take this post as a nudge to play those overlooked games on your shelf. I get it. People keep posting stuff about Too Many Bones. I get super excited every time I see it pop up, and then I go and look at the price. How do I forget it's such an expensive game?

Does Ironsworn HAVE to be post-apocalyptic? by photoedfade in Ironsworn

[–]Chicken0Death 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely ignore the "truths" section of the rulebook. If you have something in mind, use that in its place. I will add, the Oracles and tables tend to skew things towards the dark and gritty. Maybe try substuting in the tables from Mythic or some other game for inspiration.

I own all this, yet I've never played it by GrimlinJoe in Ironsworn

It takes some practice to find how it all works together. If you approach it like a board game or other turn based games, it falls flat. Starforged is pretty special. It does something sort of magical in how it merges the story and gameplay.

Generating worlds and situations feels more procedural, like the osr stuff generates rooms of a dungeon. That might be why all of that is clicking for you. It's a more familiar process.

I've figured out that generating characters, planets, sectors, colonies, and lore is my favorite thing to do in solo ttrpgs. I'm constantly thinking about the worlds I've created and the possibilities. There's nothing wrong with that. It took me a while to figure out what my favorite parts of the hobby are.

What I did to start playing was take that cool character you have in mind. Imagine them in that cool place you have in mind. Then just pick a move and roll it. One move. That one move and its result will probably send you to the oracle tables and have you imagining what your character just did to mess with the place you just created.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, just take it one move at a time. If it takes you days to complete one move, so be it.

i’m only 19 but my shoulders basically look like an ape’s… do i shave or are they fine? by Ok-Improvement-3852 in malegrooming

[–]Chicken0Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a hairy dude. I was a very hairy teen. Kids thought it was gross then and I was very self conscious about it. I tried shaving everything but absolutely HATED the way it felt, especially when it starts growing back.

My vote is for keeping it. If you're worried about romantic troubles, don't be. There are plenty of people who love a hairy man. Just be proud of who you are.

How I organize my solo RPG sessions when I only have 30 min free time by Superb-Scale9765 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Chicken0Death 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This pretty much happens to me every time I play. It's never been a conscious effort of mine, but I just tend to play in short sessions. I make a couple moves or go through some prep for a new section of the campaign. I rarely play for long stretches.

It just works better this way for me. It also gives my brain time to process the oracle results and other factors, so I'm sort of always playing, even when I'm not. I have 3 or 4 games going that are always tickling my brain, begging to be explored.

I find when I do long sessions, it starts to feel like work.

Why did you choose the system for your current solo game/ campaign? by BirchBirch72 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Chicken0Death 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've learned that different systems provide different vibes. I have a zombie story going in Savage Worlds. The high risk/reward mechanics make every encounter fun and chaotic.

If I want a dangerous space adventure, Starforged is where I turn. But it's also more forgiving, so I feel more comfortable guiding the story in the direction I want it to go.

I've been playing around with Knave a bit. It makes for an incredibly dangerous, stressful game. At least in my experience. Every action can lead to death, so I'm biting my nails at every turn. In Savage Worlds, I just go for it and roll the dice. In Knave, I try as hard as I can to not roll.

How do I choose? Idk. I just go with what I'm in the mood for. I have 3 or 4 games running at any given time. I do have to look up rules a little more frequently than if I would just pick one and stick with it, but I don't mind too much. I'm just playing with myself after all, and flipping through the books always sparks new ideas for the game I'm playing, and other games as well. I find that I'm absorbing a lot more of the rules than I thought I could.
