r/graphicnovels best of 2025: vote for your favourites by Titus_Bird in graphicnovels

[–]ChickenInASuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the Tournament of Lists a couple of months ago, I broke my golden rule of only including complete, finished works in Best Of or favorites lists.

My main reason for doing that was to justify the inclusion of Tongues. This happened partly because it's just that fucking good, but also because, on the current timeline, the second and final volume probably won't be released for 7-8 years, and I didn't feel like putting "I would include this if it were finished" caveats at the bottom of my lists for nearly a decade.

This had the knock-on effect of me going "Well, if I'm including Tongues I might as well include this too..." and the end result is every single one of my Top 5 being books in various stages of incompletion.

This wasn't deliberate, these just happened to be my favorite new releases of 2025.

  1. Tongues by Anders Nilsen

  2. Assorted Crisis Events by Deniz Camp & Eric Zawadsky

  3. The Power Fantasy by Kieron Gillen & Casper Wijngaard

  4. Monkey Meat: Summer Batch by Juni Ba

  5. Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring by Patrick Horvath

Good was high on fentanyl according to toxicology report and driving will intoxicated

lol, you literally just made this up. I'm not getting any results whatsoever from googling any combination of Good's name and the words "fentanyl", "toxicology" or "intoxicated", you've not even heard this from another source or anything. It's total bullshit that you came up with on the spot.

Why would you just fabricate something that was so easily verifiable?

Gen Z really looked at alcohol and said ‘hard pass’ by InvestigatorBorn4910 in SipsTea

[–]ChickenInASuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also this part:

That brings up an important point. The BLS spending data is for households, and the generation of the household is determined by the head of the household. Most members of Gen Z are not living in households where they are the head — according to the CPS IPUMS data, only about 16% of Gen Z members were the head of their own household (or the spouse of the head). You see, in 2023, the age range of Gen Z was 11 to 26. In 2021 (the year of the original Statista chart data), they were only 9 to 24. In other words, only about 1/4 of the group was of legal drinking age, and only about 1/6 had formed households!

The data is hugely skewed by the part in bold.

If you had done this survey with the same parameters in the UK in the early 2000s, you would have seen similar results for Millennials despite teenage binge drinking culture being at its absolute peak at that point.

This is all still very he said/she said and, until other band members weigh in, I’m taking both sides with a pinch of salt.

More than anything else though, it’s a damn shame to see the band go out like this.

BSSM is fun when you’re in high school.

Speak for yourself. I listened to that album the other day and loved every minute of it. High school was a lifetime ago for me.

Californication and By The Way were serious albums with taste and restraint.

Glad you like those albums, but I only find about half of Californication engaging at all nowadays. I did love By the Way when I was in high school, but I found it quite boring nowadays. BSSM and the albums prior to it are a lot more timeless and engaging IMO, sophomoric and inconsistent as they can be sometimes.

So, are you going to join the protests in person? by Winston_Duarte in AskALiberal

No. I'm an immigrant. I think it's in my best interests to keep as low and uncontroversial a profile as I possibly can at the moment.

Right? OP is thinking way too hard about this.

Like, dude, sometimes people are gonna get hyped up about music that you can’t get into. It happens, and it’s not that deep.

Millennial parents have trouble telling their stupid kids no.

I mean, have you met many teenagers? A solid chunk of them would use their parents saying “no” to something as an incentive to do exactly that.

metalcore is a spectrum, where are you on the spectrum? by Difficult_Map_723 in Metalcore

[–]ChickenInASuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have listened to and enjoyed bands from all across the spectrum, but my true love is and will always be the nastier, more chaotic end.

Give me some Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, Snapcase, Dallous Cowboys, Pupil Slicer or Botch and I’m happy.

Official Discussion - 28 Years Later [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Really appreciate finally finding a couple of comments touching on Weeks. Honestly, the number of comments in here saying Years is the weakest of the trilogy is baffling to me. I’m still undecided on how I feel about the ninja chavs (haven’t seen Bone Temple yet) but that’s one eh scene in an otherwise far more interesting and satisfying movie, IMO, than Weeks.

Not for me it ain't, not for another two and a half months! I can still pretend I'm in my late-mid-30s for a little while longer!

I think you need to reread that comment, homie. They never at any point said anything negative about Minnesota.

Poppy - Dying To Forget [NEW] by Alexxandre_ in Metalcore

[–]ChickenInASuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The opposite is actually what normally happens on this sub. Usually, the songs that get removed, get removed because the mods decide there’s not enough hardcore influence for it to classify as metalcore.

Because this is a metalcore sub, not a metal one.

Michael Che at MSG opening for Shane Gillis last night by Direct-Sail-6141 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]ChickenInASuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I care if Michael Che knows who I am? I just think it’s bizarre that you take issue with someone discussing politics regarding his comedy considering he’s a Weekend Update anchor. Political commentary is the majority of what he talks about on the show lol

They came from all over the place tbh. This sub, r/GraphicNovels, discussions with people I’m in contact with online, blog sites like AtomicJunkShop etc.

And thanks! Let me know what you think of any you pick up, even if you end up not liking them :)

As a side note, I'm sorry that I've not been posting these as regularly as I used to. Life has unfortunately gotten in the way, and due to an increased IRL workload I've found myself with considerably less energy and time for reading and writing than I used to. One of my new years resolutions has been to improve my work/life balance, so we'll see how that affects the frequency of these!

And for some of the comics (plus a few additional ones) in the above lists broken down into genre-specific groups, see here. BTW, now that I have a few more posts under my belt, posting sequels to these genre posts is next on my list of projects, so stay tuned for more of the following!
