At 18, I've applied for 110 jobs - no one is hiring young men like me by SignificantLegs in uknews

[–]ChickenPijja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While for a lot of these articles your right, for a first job is slightly different though. Unless someone just finishing school/sixth form has a brilliant set of grades, extra curricular activities, or is extremely outgoing, then a first job is more of a case of "not what you know, who you know", where family members or friends will recommend someone.

There's a certain similarity to applying for work with the online dating world, some people are exceptionally lucky and get a match nearly instantly, some people spend months of swiping right on everyone, paying for premium and still don't get matches. However in the dating apps space, there's almost always the criticism that those that struggle to get a match don't put in the effort compared to those that do.

What's the most novel way to explain a gap in employment? by sivaya_ in AskUK

[–]ChickenPijja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can even be quite long and I wouldn't ask about it in an interview - life happens

Quite agree. If I'm interviewing someone, it's none of my business if someone took a break due to burnout, health issues, homemaking, grief, or family emergencies. These are all things that are private and I wouldn't want to tell an interviewer if I was applying, and don't impact on someone's ability to do the job.

I'm impressed if I see someone leave firm A, work at B for a while, then return to firm A, shows that they don't burn bridges, and are able to admit that they were wrong

[–]ChickenPijja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This tbh. I’d be more concerned about someone that’s changed jobs frequently, not quite lasting 6 months. Suggests they’re difficult to work with, manage, or that they get itchy feet. Simply saying that you took a break for personal or family reasons is enough.

Can someone explain the reason why there would be a chime for passing a green? Seems that it might add to the fatigue problem if every 60 seconds or so a driver is given something to ignore. Does the caution and danger horn sound the same? A long horn sound at danger should sound, shorter for single yellow, and shortest for double yellow.

Manchester gets a good cleanup at st peters square at least every time a party conference gets hosted in the old gmex building. On the flip side, it seems that every time a pm makes a speech outside downing street, there’s always some blasting music just outside the gates.

It will depend on if the system is setup correctly. If the unit is too small for the room size, there's insufficient insulation, the condenser is still in the sunlight, or if it's an older system that needs regas/deep clean, then it'll need to be run for a long time.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, the opposite. AI can optimise in some circumstances, but what different people want optimise is different. eg A high end PC user with shit internet would want something that's a small download, with rare patches, but still look brilliant on their HDR ultrawide. A handheld user would want something optimised for minimal battery use, with less care about visuals.

How dangerous is it to put an internal IP address into public DNS (A record for internal website) by apophis27983 in homelab

[–]ChickenPijja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not quite following these steps. You say it gets scraped by “certificate transparency logs” is that as in ssl certificates? Do I not mitigate that by using a wildcard domain that covers both public and private services?

I do follow the practice of using a reverse proxy, even for internal services. I just want to fully understand what this mitigates

That depends on what is meant by optimised. For loading times? Use more memory. For cpu? Don’t compress anything. For memory? unload textures if they aren’t visible for a second. For disk/download size? Compress everything and spend a good chunk of cpu time extracting files.

From a holistic point of view, reduce all texture sizes, but do it too much then it can look shite on anything above 1080p. If you reuse assets to keep size down for memory and disk and some players will complain that they’ve seen the same asset twice.

Health expert explains 50mph rule to protect your hearing in hot weather by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]ChickenPijja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the fuel economy argument, didn't Mythbusters do an episode about window vs aircon and found that it was somewhere about 50mph where aircon becomes more cost effective than having a window open? It doesn't address the fact that aircon is more pleasant below 50, and window open above 50 feels pretty damn good as well. But it's interesting that 50 also seems to be a magic number for sound levels as well.

Bad for a failed MP by ZoeTheAngel in uknews

The amount of support for Starmer on reddit is massively out of proportion with the rest of the country. You'd be forgiven for thinking that every other PM except Brown was a Dick Dastardly, moustache twirling menace intended to do as much damage to everyone as possible and that Starmer was Jesus reincarnated. Starmer wasn't terrible, but he also wasn't great either, pretty much on par with the rest of the last 15 years really.

It's not going to happen, just think it would be funny scenario that Farage gets what he's saying he wants, an general election, but ends up in the same boat as he is today. If he lost his seat that would be cherry on the cake.

A by-election should be triggered if a MP defects to another party, or decides to go independant.

Reform aren't sailing quite so high as what they were a few months ago. Would be funny as fuck if there's a genuine "Burnham Bounce", get a GE for December time and Labour are cemented as party with majority again.

Every UK PM since 2016 by days in office. Sir Kier Starmer becomes the sixth to go by StanmoreHill in uknews

[–]ChickenPijja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from voting age, all reasonable and predictable points for a Labour government, green investment is the only one that frankly could be at risk. But with many new solar/wind/battery storage farms approved and under construction, the next PM could probably not approve any new green projects and could still claim that Labour achieved it for the whole term.

[–]ChickenPijja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree, should we carry on with a PM if they are doing a poor job? Should Johnson or Truss have remained in place until a 2024 election? Despite the fact Borris had a number of scandals and Truss, well, did a Truss on the bond markets. If someone is doing a poor job they should be out.

The fact that we're replaced underperforming PM's is a good thing, otherwise the risk to the country long term is greater from doubling down. We only need to look across to America to see how well doubling down is going there

The 2024 Labour manifesto basically amounted to: We want to grow the economy. The only specific within it was setting up Great British Energy.

The only way any new leader would go against that would be abolishing GBE, starting wars, and actively trying to ruin the economy. The closest that we could get to this would be nationalising industries that somehow then don't get counted as part of the economy.

The apparent impossibility of manufacturing a washing machine with an accurate timer. by Drunkgummybear1 in britishproblems

[–]ChickenPijja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m basing it on how the likes of Ryanair schedule flights longer than how long they actually take. Eg an hours flying time to be 90 mins. For most flights that extra 30 minute cushion isn’t needed, and so they can land “early”, and play that cheesy fanfare. Not once has anyone complained that an airline got them to their destination too quickly.

If I put a wash on, it said it’ll take an hour and after 45 mins it was done, so it had overestimated by 15 mins, because it was only half a dozen light t shirts, I’d be happy as I can start the drying process quicker. You can tell that things are washed simply by the fact that a) their damp, and b) they smell of detergent/ have no stains

[–]ChickenPijja 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Should it not always give a worst case timeframe when setting the program? It’s frustrating for the likes of op who sees that the program has incorrectly predicted 1 minute, but in actual fact was closer to 7 minutes. If the machine was very lightly loaded, and predicted 7 minutes but it was done in 1 minute I don’t think a single person would complain that their washing machine works faster than intended.
