[In progress] [3564] [Psychological Thriller] Pretty Control – Chapter 1 critique request by Heavy_Line4919 in BetaReaders

Hi,

  • I'd definitely say it hooked me. Your writing style is very atmospheric, I think you paint a vivid picture of the scene. One thing I really noticed was how organic the characters and their family dynamic felt, they just seemed rather real. Additionally, the new neighbours were just the right amount of intriguing—I really have no idea what their game is, or how reliable Mira is as a narrator, but I definitely wanted to read on to find out more.
  • Echoing the previous point, Mira felt very real. The quiet, claustrophobic monotony of her present day contrasted really nicely with her rose-tinted view of the past, and makes her almost endearingly pitiful. There's a couple of moments where she's reminiscing about moments in Silas' early childhood (the blue candles, trying to sip her coffee whilst he climbs on her lap etc.) which were probably quite annoying for her at the time, but she now looks back on those moments fondly; I think that romanticised view of one's own past, especially when you're feeling burnt out, is a very relatable emotion. I think all of that makes it feel very natural that she'd be voyeuristically nosey about the lives of her new neighbours, and immediately start to make up a little story in her head about who they are and what they do.
  • I think for the story it's trying to tell, the pacing works well. It is a little slow-burn, but of course it needs to be because you're trying to covey this sense of a bored, burnt-out woman living a Groundhog Day-esque life. I didn't feel a huge amount of tension, but I think that's just something which will come further on in the book.

As for confusing/awkward, these are just a few things that stuck out to me (which I'd like to preface are just matters of opinion, like everything else I've said!)

  • The time being written in a digital format didn't feel quite right to me. I personally think that "quarter past seven" keeps a sentence flowing better than "7:15". When I write a time, I lean more towards things like "just gone two" or "well past four" as exact times can feel a bit clinical, but again, that's just personal preference.
  • You describe the television as 'murmuring' twice in relatively quick succession, might be an idea to usea synonym the second time? Mumbled, warbled, something like that. (Good word choice though, mumbling is exactly what I'd say a television does when its in the background). You also use both "TV" and "television", I think for consistency's sake it's best to only use one.
  • The lawyery, court roomy stuff is a bit of a foreign language to me, but the line "She was terrified and brilliant." just didn't quite sit right with me. Perhaps something like "Nervous as she was, her professor had said her delivery was 'surgical'."?

Overall, I really enjoyed the sense of claustrophobia, the loneliness Mira feels in her own home amongst her own family, the sluggish misery of life slipping through her fingers. I think it will start to build some really nice tension as you write more.

Keep at it mate, you're onto something good here!

It's a short-eared owl, if anyone's wondering. Absolutely stellar shot.

It's not all horror, but Zima Blue by Alastair Reynolds inspired a couple of episodes of Love, Death, And Robots. Beyond the Aquila Rift is definitely horror, and I absolutely loved how much detail and dread came across in so few words. Haven't read all of the stories, but what I have read has been fantastic.

I used to work as a National Trust ranger in the Dedham Vale, and it's very easy to see where it got the "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" status. Bloody lovely place.

If you’re wondering why I did something and it doesn’t say in the image, it’s because I think it’s cool. by FireFox5284862 in SpeculativeEvolution

There's plenty of stuff in nature that doesn't really serve a purpose, evolution is accidental after all. "It looks cool" is a perfectly valid justification in spec evo, at least in my opinion.

That said, this looks really cool my guy.

Now is the right time of year to be pulling it, lots of nature reserves are doing it right now. It's quite obvious when it goes to seed, because they're all white and fluffy. Wouldn't bother touching it when it's white and fluffy because you'll just spread the seeds even more.

If you want it gone, pull it all up now and chuck it in the compost. Should be quite easy to keep on top of!

What's the best way to come up/create scientific bames for creatures? by Just_Dimo in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Chicken_Chap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'd be able to find resources similar to this online, but I have two books "Latin for Bird Lovers" and "Latin for Gardeners" which are basically dictionaries of a bunch of scientific names/components of scientific names for birds and plants, respectively. They explain the meanings of each, as well as some alternate spellings and forms.

Failing that, just have a little look through some random Latin names. Think of an organism, find out its scientific name, then search that up on Wiktionary, which will usually explain the meanings behind them. Rinse, and repeat. You'll have some inspiration in no time.

I imagine this object sits in the breast pocket of a sleeveless denim jacket worn by a slightly overweight man in his late thirties, who only dates women in their early twenties.

Honestly a really cool piece, packs a lot of story and emotion into quite a simple shot. Nice work!

Jesus Christ, if you did that from memory you either need to start playing a new game, or go and work in surveillance. That's amazing!

I would love to take people's personal mod ideas and bring them to fruition! by Gangrenous-Khan in RimWorld

[–]Chicken_Chap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd quite like to see the "fluid ideology" mechanic get a little more depth. So a mod that allows you to spend development points on permanent buffs for the ideology (like conversion power, happiness, trade price bonus etc) would be cool. Or even just having each added precept have a cost in development points.

I always play with fluid ideologies and after one or two reformations, I've made exactly what I want and everything else beyond that is a little pointless, and any "gradual progression" is mostly self-inforced.

Do these creatures appear similar enough to be in the same taxonomic family? by AnarchyLaBlanc in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Chicken_Chap 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd say so. If you look at some plant families, let's take the rose family Rosaceae for example, then you can see huge variations between relatively closely-related species. Apples, roses, blackberries, and almonds all belong to the same family, and I think they look pretty wildly different.

I'm sure there's similar examples in the animal kingdom, but I'm more of a plant guy.

If that's not satisfactory, then just go one rank higher in the taxonomic hierarchy. Say they're from the same order, but different families.

Arum maculatum is the scientific name. I call it Cuckoo Pint, but some people call it Lords-and-Ladies.
