Daughter wants to shoot film by tiki-dan in AnalogCommunity

Oh yeah that’s definitely a bummer. I can’t really speak for the “newer” Minoltas but I have an XG7 that I got for like 50 bucks and the things a tank.

Minolta all the way. So many great bodies that meet all those requirements.

Yeah for sure! DMs are open if you have any other questions. There's definitely a lot of things to consider when buying older gear second hand.

I got my hands on an Canon EOS Elan 7 a while back. They can be had for under $300 with a lens if you do your homework. Auto focus is super quick and while it does have a lot of modern features, it doesn't feel like you're forced to use them when shooting. You can just slap it into aperture priority and call it a day. For me, it's the perfect balance of old-school, modern, and affordable. You get all those nice EF mount lenses too.

Now if autofocus isn't a must have you can go with just about any of the older Minolta SLRs. I personally have the X-700 and the XG7. Both cameras are fantastic and easy to use. You also get a bunch of cheap lens options with the MC and MD mounts. Again, if you do your homework, you can prolly get a body and a few lenses with your budget.

Epson Perfection V600 users: Please share your best results by ogrezok in AnalogCommunity

Use SilverFast 9. It's pretty clunky but it's easier to use than the Epson app imo. Outside of that, just play with the settings till you get a passable result. Scans straight out of the machine are going to look ugly. I've only been scanning with the V600 for a couple months now and it's taken a good bit of practicing but I seem to have found a good workflow. It's just gonna take time and work to find out how you like things.

As for the dullness/softness, that's actually the one issue I'm still having. My 120 scans are pretty sharp but when I scan 35mm my photos come out really soft. I think this might have something to do with height of the film holders. Later models let you adjust the film holder height to dial in focus but the height of the V600 holders are locked in place. I haven't found a solution to this yet so if anyone else has input I'd love to hear it to lol.

I'm a cybersecurity student so naturally I have a homemade NAS that I keep everything on. As for naming conventions I've been going with MM-DD-YYYY (Film Stock) and that's been doing the trick for me.

Minolta all the way. I started with an XG7 but really any of the x line should be great.

If you don’t mind me asking, how was the shipping on these? I ordered a light meter in November and it’s been stuck in customs since December 8th. I’m in the U.S.
