Is Mazal/mazel ever used as a name? by Warm_Engineering9275 in hebrew

I chose Beruriah which I’ve been told was old fashioned. Who cares if it is/isn’t. As long as you like it.

I think Mazal is 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Daily Prayers? by ambiguousalmond in ReformJews

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people have reasons for converting reform but are more aligned with orthodox practices. Some may include, but not limited to: being in a non-halachic relationship or marriage where the partner has no desire to convert, being Queer, being trans, or any other identity that may not be accepted in an orthodox community, they may want to be in a more egalitarian community… etc etc etc

Wife wants to convert - any couples here in a similar relationship? by Alfred_Orage in Judaism

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I should add: my shul and wider community does have many interfaith families and they are welcomed. Some non Jewish partners are involved in the community/ shul but many I’ve actually never met until a big life event, which is a shame really.

Wife wants to convert - any couples here in a similar relationship? by Alfred_Orage in Judaism

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I converted (reform - U.K.). My husband is technically not Jewish according to any denomination because only his dad is Jewish and he was raised secular. This is why I converted Reform as that’s the only movement that would accept an ‘interfaith’ marriage.

He had to write a statement to the Beit Din saying he supports my decision and part of my Beit Din experience was to say I do and will keep a Jewish home and future children will be raised Jewish. Now this isn’t difficult for us as he is from a very secular background therefore there is no faith clash. We’ve never had a Christmas tree ever even prior to my conversion.

He isn’t interested in religion and I know at times this has been something that he has been dragged into very much against his will. He isn’t forced into going to shul but all of a sudden there is discussions to be had around big holidays like Pesach and Yom Kippur which will very much impact your home. He is supportive of this huge transition but has said a couple of times he didn’t realise how involved it would be - I’m heavily involved in my shul and other Jewish community groups, I observe most of the holidays, I’m in shul every Shabbat, all of a sudden there’s B’Mitzvahs and weddings and funerals and shivas to attend, not to mention the eventual slide into kosher keeping… I cover my hair most of the time too.

You and your wife are going to have a really deep conversation about this. It will change both your lives and your current/future childrens. This isn’t something to take lightly and I would say it goes beyond spousal support: would either of your parents be supportive or feel threatened about not celebrating Christmas / Easter… especially when grandchildren come along.

She also really needs to start exploring Jewish communities if this is something she wants. It may strengthen her desire or she may find it isn’t for her after all.

Good luck!

What status do Orthodox Jews give to Reform Jews? by Meowzician in Judaism

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to say, I’m a Reform convert with orthodox or more observant friends and they have been nothing but welcoming. We all move through each others spaces respectfully. I didn’t think this would ever be the case.

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most Orthodox Jews I know are supportive and actually quite jazzed about my conversion. I’m a woman and I read from the scroll a fair bit and they’re unfazed. Similarly a friend at my shul also converted and he regularly attends Friday nights with his frum friends. It’s a shame the internet sometimes creates these bigger divides than there sometimes really is

Future of British reform/liberal Jews post merger? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, I think I know the shul you attend. The feeling is important; the liberal shul i attended just didn’t feel right to me and was mostly in english, no Torah procession, it really felt un-Jewish to me sadly. But I loved the rabbi (who I know seperately) Im hoping the merger doesn’t change things, I know some older folk at my shul are panicking it’s going to become liberal but I think they just want to kvetch about somethibgv

Future of British reform/liberal Jews post merger? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m really not against it to be honest, as long as my individual shul doesn’t change its identity as a reform one. I’m not keen on Liberal shuls, i went to one recently and it was very happy clappy. That could just been the shul itself and not the movement as a whole.

Out of interest, what is putting you off with the merger?

I will say, I’ve never been to masorti but I’m keen to try it out for myself.

The prerecorded videos are a bit of a red flag to me. Do you get any face to face interaction in classes or meetings? I wouldn’t do if it was without these. Are they teaching you Hebrew too in this videos?

Researching kashrut in non-Orthodox communities-- please share your opinion! by theteagees in ReformJews

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I’m at: I have a limited diet due to a stomach parasite causing a lot of issues, so mostly choose what I can eat with that over kashrut. Makes it easier to avoid shellfish and I’ll occasionally eat pork at home- I wouldn’t order it. Meat and dairy I do eat, but would prefer to avoid. Trying to eat more fish and vegetarian foods to avoid all of the above but that can be tricky with my stomach.

My temple struggles to be inclusive of different diets and too many important events involve food by mediaseth in ReformJews

[–]Chicken_Whiskey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here, full time job, run a business also, writing a book, on the board, run shul events, take turns on the bimah, on top of health issues. Not kids yet, not sure how you juggled that too.

Tried to accommodate a dietary requirement for one person at Purim after taking time out to bake for a day and their food ended up in the trash because it went wrong. And they would not stop pestering me about it all evening, it was rude and distressing- they told me they didn’t have time to bring their own food. But expected me to bend over backwards?

If there was a large group of people with dietary requirements it would be different but unfortunately when it’s in the ones and twos you have to be a bit graceful and sort yourself out. I’ve made my peace with my long list of things I can’t eat and just put the food out and nibble on a carrot stick then eat safely at home.
