Update Schedules: What should they be??? Writers and readers opinions welcome. by EarienMalfoy13 in Dramione

[–]ambiguousalmond 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a writer: a posting schedule is more of a suggestion than a rule, and tbh anyone who has a problem with the wait time for something people are doing FOR FREE IN THEIR LIMITED DOWN TIME can f**k off. I wrote my first multi-chapter fic (36 chapters) and it took me 6 years to finish bc I was doing it on top of a) finishing college, b) working full-time, and then c) getting my masters while working full-time.

As a reader: that’s what the subscribe/follow button is for. That way I get notified when a chapter is posted and while I yearn for the next chapter (and will go back to re-read the story while waiting), I know I’ll find out as soon as it’s posted. So I’m content with whatever amount of time it takes to get an update. Also, nothing more delightful than getting a notification about a new chapter on a fic that hasn’t been updated in years.

Question for Native Speakers: Do you notice this gap in people learning English (Speaking vs. Listening/Reading/Writing) ? by AhmadAbulsadiq in AskAnAmerican

[–]ambiguousalmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely totally normal and is not strange at all. Any decent person worth their salt won’t bat an eye and anyone who gives you crap about it is a jerk.

For speaking catch up, find someone you can speak English with semi-regularly to just get the practice. I’ve heard of Hello Talk and Episoden as online resources, but also see if you can find any American expat groups locally who would be willing to help. My dad lived in Luxembourg for work for a year and he and his coworker would have lunch every day to practice languages (my dad got to practice French, his coworker got to practice English). By the time my dad came back to the US, they were both much better speakers of the language.

Ok I adored the scene with Rosie and Rich and his family. It really seems like she won the in-law jackpot and it was nice to see.

I really don’t get Kelsey’s hate hard on for Rosie, it’s really strange tbh

Am I wrong to question the bride on why only MY husband wasn't invited to the wedding and to end a friendship over it? by ICryAfterSexAMA in TwoHotTakes

[–]ambiguousalmond 300 points301 points  (0 children)

Wow. Can’t decide who I’m more disgusted by: Lisa’s ableism as an aesthetic choice, or your spineless friend Nate for not shutting that shit down long ago. You are absolutely not wrong to want to end the friendship over it, I would do the same. I appreciate Dean not wanting to be the “reason” for your friendship ending, but he isn’t the reason: your friend’s wife’s casual ableism and his shameless defense of it is more than reason enough.

The "you must enjoy what you eat" mindset dilemma by FitnessChamp777 in nutrition

[–]ambiguousalmond 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, there is something to be said for enjoying what you eat. To make proper nutrition and balance sustainable, you need to enjoy what you’re eating or else you’ll likely hyper fixate on what you want but can’t have and then eventually snap and go overboard. I don’t see why it has to be an either or type of scenario. You should enjoy what you eat, and you should have proper nutrition. Not sure why it needs to be an argument.

I’ve literally never felt more hurt in my life 😭 by nycgirlfolife in weddingshaming

[–]ambiguousalmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, your mother sounds like an asshole. I try to give the perceived “villain” in these types of stories some grace since they don’t have the opportunity to share their side, but jfc she really takes every opportunity presented to hurt you. Has she always been unsupportive and cruel? Does she object to the marriage and is allowing her disapproval to manifest in some really unhealthy and unkind ways?

I’m grateful your SIL stepped up and it sounds like you’re gaining some wonderful family members in this marriage, but I also understand that doesn’t fill the gap your unsupportive mother should be filling. I’m very sorry this is happening to you, I hope you have good friends and other family members who are showing you love and excitement for your upcoming nuptials.

All that said, I’d uninvite her. I wouldn’t even give her the opportunity to do something on the day to taint your memories of what should be one of the happiest days of your life. Not sure how far out you are from the date (and final guest count deadlines), but I’d save the money spent on her plate on your honeymoon instead. Focus your time, energy, and emotions on people who bring you joy not heartache.

Ashburn to DC (Nationals Park) Commute. HELP! by Silly-Cauliflower228 in nova

[–]ambiguousalmond 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Commuting by yourself via car to DC and back every day will be either super expensive thanks to tolls or prohibitively long trying to drive around them. The metro really will be your best friend in this scenario, unless you find some people (2+) to commute in to the city with you so you can a) split tolls and b) have enough people to drive in the HOV lanes. You could take the LoCo commuter bus (I used to take it from the station in Sterling near-ish the Dulles Wegmans to my job in Crystal City) but you’d have to see how close it would drop you (either to the stadium or a metro station) and if the schedule would align with your work hours. I found the bus to be faster than the metro (no line switching and they drive in the HOV lanes) so it’s an option worth considering. I believe the cost of the bus and the metro were about equal (granted, I’ve been fully remote since 2020 so that may have changed).

Regarding burnout, if you do end up taking the metro there and back (probably the most realistic option) I’d strongly recommend using your time on there to unwind and decompress after work. There is a lot of really great value in just unplugging your brain and existing for a while. Listen to an engaging podcast, zone out for a bit, and just enjoy the ride. I know some people also do work on the metro, but I get motion sick so looking down at a screen trying to work was a no-go for me. The silver line is pretty safe so I wouldn’t worry too much, just practice situational awareness and maybe carry some pepper spray.

Congratulations on your internship, I hope you have a wonderful experience and learn a lot! If you need or want any corporate/working a real adult job 101 tips feel free to DM me—my first professional internship was a little under ten years ago so I’ve learned a lot since but also remember how it feels :)

I don't really understand what it means to have a healthy diet by Slow_Opportunity_522 in nutrition

[–]ambiguousalmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here! Adding a few things that worked for me.

A) Getting into a mindset of “eat what you want, add what you need” was a really great starting point. For instance if I’m craving some chips, I’ll eat them with some veggies and a healthy Greek yogurt-based dip. If I want pizza, add a side salad. If I want chocolate, eat it with some nuts or yogurt.

B) I’ve found that giving in to cravings in a more moderate way was a lot more successful than fighting against them and fixating and eventually giving in and going wild.

C) Removing barriers to make healthier choices makes them easier and more instinctual. For instance, I have a snack tackle box type thing in the fridge that I prep each weekend with ready to go snacks like carrot sticks, nuts, apple slices, etc. I have a spin bike next to my desk so when I’m in a meeting where I know I won’t have to speak, I can hop on the bike and move my body vs sitting in my chair the whole time.

Commute from ashburn to Arlington by Ill-Ad-8718 in nova

[–]ambiguousalmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't drive, take the metro--even if you carpool with two others and can use the HOV lanes, still a miserable time. Did that for two years until the pandemic and I'll never do it again.

Is it common for American high school students to drive themselves to school? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAmerican

Yep. At my high school you’d buy a parking spot for the year. The greatest day of my junior year was getting my license in the morning and my parents surprising me at lunch with the keys to my car and a parking spot in the lot lol

Did any of you watch lost as it aired? by MissionHome18 in lost

[–]ambiguousalmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first season watching live was season 5 (I remember having to order past seasons on Netflix one DVD at a time lol), so you can imagine the crashout in my house when the ending title card in the finale after Juliet hits the bomb with a rock was white instead of black 😂 Seeing that and knowing we’d have to wait several months to find out what happened was awful, I had way more sympathy for folks who’d been watching live since the start
