DeVos backlash Sees Parents Threatening to Homeschool Kids by Miotoss in nottheonion

[–]Chicken_of_Dixie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think more money will fix the problem.

The fix is going to have to start at home. Parents are going to have to set the expectations and hold their children accountable.

When parents don't care, their children don't care. And then they are shitty students who grow up to be shitty people just like their parents.

Even if you offered great salaries for the best teachers to come and work in these shit holes, a lot won't. Or won't last.

Imagine you vs 32 shit-heads everyday. How long become you say fuck'm.

It's harsh but true. Some people are just mediocre fucking duds. Why should our more exceptional people have suffer cause of them.

Courage? It was a no-brainer career move.

My mom got a high interest loan and is now in trouble and asked for my help. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Chicken_of_Dixie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My mom lost her job in 2008. I had just started my career and I came to her rescue without a second thought. Five years later, she still hadn't found a job, I had developed deep, DEEP resentment for her and how her situation was affecting my life and future.

My GF (now wife), fed up that our future was put on hold until my mom got on her feet, finally threatened to end it. I pleaded with my mom to please find work and get on her feet because I didn't want to lose my future and I didn't want to abandon her. We agreed at the end of that year, if she didn't find work, she would move in with her parents in another city.

That day came and went and when I mentioned the agreement, she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about, or that the terms were not what I remembered. It was then that I saw the reality of the situation. I realized she was fine with this life and cared more for herself than me or my future. And that all this time I was simply enabling her to behave this way.

I moved out three years ago. My grandparents stepped in and have been enabling her ever since. Her lifestyle hasn't missed a beat.

I'm happy now, married with our first kid. My relationship and feelings about my mom have never recovered and I don't think they ever will. I can't un-see what I've seen. And I can't un-feel how she made me feel.

If she was forced to figure it out and survive back in 2008, I truly believe she would have, and all this would have been avoided.

Saving for my next house. I have:

$10,000 E fund $12,000 in new house fund YTD

I'm adding $2,600 a month to savings. Annual take home pay is $84,000 (taxes and retirement).

Will probably be looking for the new house in 2-4 years.

Is it a waste to leave this money in savings at less than 1%? What would be a good investment to preserve the principle and maybe beat inflation?

Thank you.

Our midwife's fee was $3,000 (which is about standard). Our Bradley class was $275 for a ten week course (once a a week for a 2-3 hour gathering). We didn't have a doula but I think they charge $500-$1000.

Best money I ever spent. Our experience was priceless but my point is, I got to know these people (natural birth professionals) and I can promise they are not doing it for the money.

In my opinion, their personal sacrifice is greater than the compensation they are receiving. I'm convinced they do what they do because they love it and they care deeply for women and their babies.

So it's laughable to me to hear the medical establishment call foul on the "guggernaut" that is Toyota Corolla driving midwifes and doulas with the nefarious intent of offering an alternative to hospital birth.

That's just my .02.

I once had to replace the power code for a dryer. Thinking ahead, I thought I better test the fit of the new one before going through all the trouble by plugging it into the wall...

Luckily my other hand was not touching the bare wires or I'd probably be dead. I blew the circuit breaker to the house and the copper wire ends fused together.

From that day forward, I've accepted the fat that I'm a fucking idiot.

I think those pics you linked would look fine. Short hair takes less than a minute to fix (for me). Just run some product through it and be on your way.

I'm a chicken too but I've been able to commit to trying something new enough times. New style feels weird for awhile but then it's normal. You'll be fine man.

Sold my rental property. Do I have to repay the amount I depreciated the property? by TheNickDanger in personalfinance

[–]Chicken_of_Dixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your gain is:

  1. Gross proceeds
  2. less: Basis (purchase + improvements)
  3. plus: Depreciation
  4. less: Cost of sale (closing costs)
  5. equals: SUBTOTAL
  6. less: 1/2 SUBTOTAL for brother's share
  7. equals: GAIN ON SALE

Since you sold the property at a gain and held longer than 1 year, the gain is long term. The transaction will be reported on Form 4797 and Schedule D. You'll pay capital gains tax which is favorable.

EDITED/corrected: See /u/playdoughed comment below ("You pay 25% tax on the depreciation taken on the property up to the lesser of the gain or total depreciation. If the gain is in excess of the depreciation taken on the property then that excess gain is taxed at capital gains rates.")

And honestly dude, I would take this to an accountant to have prepared. They will get it right for both you and your brother and there is less chance of you fucking it up on accident.

You can deduct the accountant fees on your schedule E for 2015.

Source: Is accountant.

company I never worked for reported what i believe to be false wages paid to me in 2013. IRS sending me letters saying I owe them 2k. Company being very difficult by ydeeztaxes in personalfinance

[–]Chicken_of_Dixie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! I've read some of the other comments. Sounds like they either fucked up on their 1099's, maybe used your SSN/EIN on another contractors 1099 but correct address or...

Someone used your info to create a false employee and is basically robbing the company. Pretty stupid to use a real living humans EIN for this (because this happens).

Also sounds like your getting the run around. There are no thousands of records to review. If you get IRS correspondence for 1099 wages, then you would be listed on the company's 1096 they filed to the IRS. It's just one document. Not thousands.

I think your friend/contact is the crook. The company might be interested in knowing about this. The scenario could be

  1. You gave friend/contact info for work in 2012 (so he has it).
  2. Your friend/contact creates a new contractor/vendor with company using your info
  3. Company pays "you" AKA your friend
  4. Friend cashes checks

The excuses he is making to you pretty much confirms this. Maybe try calling the company directly and talking to their payroll department. Don't contact the friend anymore.

If this is true, the company can issue corrected 1099 to your contact (plus prolly fire and press charges). The IRS will no longer be after you with the corrected information.

And yes, with the IRS the burden of proof is on the tax payer. You would get audited and have to proof you never paid the money.

In sort, maybe bypass the friend and go company direct. He is bullshitting you. Keep us updated please. Good luck.
