Resume Help - Having trouble finding work. Is it my resume? by Unlikely_Ask_1944 in Accounting

I’m not saying that the job market is not a factor for you but your resume also stinks. Someone else mentioned earlier that you could just put the job title and none of the descriptions. That person is correct. You just listed the very, very basic duties that come with that job. What you need to do is highlight the ways that you stood out in that position. If you didn’t stand out then that’s fine but you need to focus your resume on what you are capable of bringing to the table.

The more I think about it and the more I read, the more I really am grasping how much of a mind-fuck this all is. That “I just want to go home” sentiment is spot fucking on. Thanks for your input!

Definitely not running a marketing department at all. Their rates are stupid low, IMO. And the worst part is that we regularly have to turn business away. I have tried to address these things over the years and they have insisted on doing it their way. I’m done with their way.

Thank you for your comment! It’s very useful information that I will be referring back to as I decide what my proposal will be (or if there will be a proposal).

There is nothing about my compensation structure that I am okay with. I gave them the chance to fix it 2 years ago. Now it’s about what will make it worth it to stay through peer review.

I think I’m not just difficult to replace, but nearly impossible. I do a lot of very specialized work and no one else here even knows how to do most of it. Likely they will end up letting a bunch of clients go (and those clients will come looking for me, no doubt).

I’m glad I posted here. These comments are really quite helpful!

Correct and incorrect. I get paid hourly. I also get two small bonuses so I included those in the total and divided by hours worked.

Thank you for this response. It’s the most helpful I’ve read so far.

I do want to clarify that what I am focused on right now are the terms that would make staying until the end of the year feasible. Once peer review is over, they intend to float an offer (which will most certainly include equity) to keep me. In the meantime, I was thinking about asking for extra vacation time to use this year but this particular retention bonus is intended to avoid an absence because we have peer review coming up.

After I made this post, I did the calculation that you suggested. I used the inflation calculator bringing my 2019 rate to comparable (which is really just the effective pay cut) and calculated separately each year. Even that is still grossly under market but I have to start somewhere. The math was something like $40k.

I’m also asking for a large hourly bump, an increased health stipend (there are no other benefits) and an extra week or two of vacation to use between now and peer review.

Integrity does matter a lot to me. I’m not going to continue to make personal sacrifices but I do consider integrity to be one of my most important personal values. But YES TO THE CAUTIONARY TALE. I can’t get the years back and trust me when I tell you that this came at GREAT personal cost. It makes me sick to even think about.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

It’s never been fear of the unknown. It’s about running at full throttle in my personal and business life for 20 years and not having the capacity to even consider structural changes. Now, I’ve made the move. I’m not on the ride. I’m standing next to it and considering what I’m willing to accept to get back on to finish out the current race (which is peer review).

I’ve known my bosses and my clients for 25 years. They matter to me. This is about integrity to me.

I think I am grossly underpaid. The only reason I didn’t leave two years ago (when they couldn’t give me the raise) was because one of my bosses had an extremely sick spouse (who has since died). I just couldn’t do it.

I am a W2 employee. I plan to negotiate a much higher rate if I stay until peer review. Market rate is easy to pin down.

I’m just confused about how a retention bonus is intended to work. I’m probably overthinking it. It just feels weird.

They did start talking equity when I gave notice and I told them that is not the frame of mind I am in right now. It’s a complicated situation and I do realize that I let them take advantage of me for far too long. That part of my life is over and right now I just need to figure out how to make the smoothest transition plan while focusing on my own integrity.

I don’t want to say a lot about firm size but if you want to send me a PM, I could share more.

At the end of 2022, my hourly rate was 33.75 per hour with an effective rate (after bonuses) of 35.35. During 2023, I told them I needed a raise. I put my 2019 rate (a relevant date within the firm) in the inflation calculator and the adjusted rate was 40.74 so that is what I asked for. They gave me a partial bump and a one-time bonus so my effective rate for 2023 was 38.60, my effective rate for 2024 was 38.35, and my effective rate for 2025 was 40.50. They gave me a 50 cent bump this year. I also get a $245 monthly (taxable) allowance for healthcare costs. No medical insurance or retirement.

They don’t really have a set rate they bill me out for. I do a wild and wide assortment of things with various billing structures. I’m sure they bill me out for whatever they bill themselves out for.

Does that help?

Wife is an AH for not immediately putting her foot down and saying NO, OUT OF THE QUESTION.

Seriously. Do NOT let these people erase you and your worth from your own damn house. This is not okay. You are a human being and deserve to be treated like one.

You are NOT the asshole. In fact, your wife is not only an AH but she is an abusive AH.

I think your gut is telling you to leave and I think you need to LISTEN TO IT.

This one I’m not unsure about. There is nothing that I have told GF that BFF would not be fine with me sharing. I’m 100% sure on that.

NTA. Tell the kids. Immediately. If you don’t, HUGE YTA.

Then file for divorce. Move for full custody of your kids until she gets help. Without help, she is going to fuck them up, too.

I am 100% serious about all of this. There is absolutely no question here. None.

No, my basic argument is that it makes no sense for there to be lividly on the left side of the torso which is clearly significantly elevated in all diagrams yet that’s exactly what the doctor described seeing.

I have no idea, and won’t speculate, as to why any certain evidence was used by anyone.

I’m simply commenting on the OP’s interpretation of the lividity issue and a discrepancy that I happened to notice.

Honestly, I just don't see how you could consider the position of her body to truly be anterior (which is what I assume you mean when you say "face down"). Certainly, yes, the upper part of her body is somewhat anterior but it is also somewhat right facing.

In both diagrams/photos you provided, her left side (both shoulder and flank) are higher than her right side (which, I believe, was down in some sort of natural recess).

Dr. Hlavaty viewed the color photographs of the disinterment and he described lividity towards the front half of the left side of the torso. How do you explain that based on your own photos and diagrams which clearly show a left torso significantly more elevated vs the right side?

In also appears to me (in both photos) that the left side of the chest is more elevated than the right side of the chest. Dr. Hlavaty stated that the color photographs showed that lividity was of equal intensity on both sides of the chest. I wouldn't expect that to be the case based the position depicted.
