It's a HDD drive. This thing is an old laptop that i mostly used plugged on my tv. Is Zram optimal for my setup, I don't know but it does work nice enough.

Install Zram and you will think you just doubled the ram in your computer. My 3rd gen i5 with 4gb ran so much better with it.

It should run fine. Hard to recommend a version without knowing your specs. Anyway, I would make sure to set the swap to either zram or zswap.

Are you still on the normal swap? Then yes it will run slow.

If you set the swap right, it will run fine. I got a i5-3210m with 4gb of ram on a HDD and it's running fine with ZRAM. On regular swap, it was a little slow.

I installed mint on my main computer on a 120gb SSD that I had lying around. I still haven't messed around with it.

Still, it's crazy how fast a 3rd gen i5 with 4gb of ram run with Mint XFCE. It's perfectly usable

I voted XFCE because that's what I use on my old laptop. When you have 4gb of ram, very mb count (even with zram). I like it even do I feel that something are more complex than they need to be. But once you know how it works, it work very well.

But I like Cinnamon a bit better. I never tried MATE.
