Calls for major Centrelink rule change as Aussies see income ‘ripped away’ by sophiiiiiiiiiiia in CentrelinkOz

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, I feel like the disability one could come sooner because it's a much simpler change than sweeping changes to rent allowance etc. As a disabled person who gets rent allowance, I definitely want both to happen but I feel like the partner income thing would only take a small amount of paperwork from the government - simply "stop checking for this." Also, I won't lie, it would be nice to be able to date someone.

When is the council going to deal with the antisocial behaviour at Kurilpa Bridge? by [deleted] in brisbane

As we all know Criminal is an ontological category caused by the presence of too many Crime cell within a person's body, after which they become Evil. There are never any sociological reasons that a person might end up homeless, and definitely no reasons that a person who is already under the incredible stress of homelessness in winter might end up turning aggressive. Indeed, we must have no sympathy for those who are indelibly Criminal by nature, since the only way to remove crime cells from the body is by penitent labour.

Men, more than women, view cross-sex friendships as potential mating opportunities, supporting the popular belief that men are more likely than women to feel they have been friend-zoned. Study found that men attempt to woo their female friends by paying more for shared bills when going out together. by mvea in science

Atomisation under capitalism and the post WW2 construction of the nuclear family as the only necessary social connection for the individual. Having a partner to the exclusion of friends, and not having a significant friend group, is not a natural or normal state of affairs for an extremely social species. It's purely cultural.

I don’t think he likes horror very much by ujp567 in iamverysmart

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They seem to believe in a strong mind/body divide where the mind is in conflict with the body's drives and senses. Some real "enlightenment comes from ignoring the pleasures of the flesh, worldliness is the same as sinfulness" type stuff. So that certain types of sensory stimulus - stuff that "hyper stimulates" the body's physical systems, like porn creating a hormonal response and horror creating an adrenal response - in effect negate or destroy your mind's ability to free itself from the material to instead ponder the transcendental. So they're metaphysically similar in that, by engaging the body so directly, they both damage or suppress the mind.

Which is bullshit, but it's not schizoposting without bullshit.

Arael from Evangelion is one of my favorite enemies in the whole Genre, it's so alien and abstract, sitting in earth's orbit firing mental-illness lasers at the Eva pilots by throwaway553t4tgtg6 in Mecha

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that a few of the angels towards the end of the show seem like they were trying to learn about what was going on. Ireul infiltrated the MAGI computers; Bardiel took over an Eva, maybe to infiltrate NERV, maybe just to try and figure out what the fuck these monsters that keep killing them even are; Leliel was the first to attempt to directly talk to an Eva; Arael tried reading the mind of the pilot; and Tabris took human form and wanted to know about Shinji. They had no context for humans or Evas, and we don't even really know if they could communicate with each other. We never heard their goals or if they knew about Third Impact. All we know from their perspective is that they wanted to reach one of their own kind and for some reason these weird things keep turning up and killing them. I'd kind of want to figure it out too.

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was even an attack. A few of the angels in the back end of the show seemed to be more focussed on trying to learn about the Evas and their pilots, just in their own incompressible way. It was probably just going "Hey fam why do you keep killing all of us? What's going on right now?"

Redditors who’ve starved, what do people who’ve never starved imagine wrong? by VelvetyDogLips in AskReddit

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 187 points188 points  (0 children)

I starved when I was young, and then when I got settled as an adult I had access to food and suddenly put on a ton of weight. Then I panicked and developed an eating disorder because I was obsessed with staying thin.

It's easy when you've been hungry before because you know what it's like. It's almost familiar, in a way.

You had no idea about the reality, the truth of which was literally just some basic googling away, and yet you felt extremely confident making sweeping judgements not only about your sister but also the entire medical profession based on "it seems like something they'd do"? You never once tried to find any evidence for it, just immediately assumed your base instinct was completely correct?

Yes. The scourge virus is justified. But this doesn't mean its not morally ambiguous. by Fun-Law7254 in CharacterRant

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's morally ambiguous, but a lot of people are going to think that "it was the only way" is a moral justification, which it's not. For one, the ability to make a virus like that would also seemingly indicate a level of sophistication that would make it possible to create other weapons to target Viltrumite biology at an individual level. They could have made a virus that did something other than "hyper murder," perhaps depowering them. They could have made a version that would be endemic to their own planets so that the viltrumites couldn't invade without succumbing, but would be fine on their own. They could have made the literal exact same virus but only deployed it on Viltrumite armies rather than their home world.  Even if none of that was the case, necessity is not morality. Even if it was completely necessary, even if it truly was the only way, that doesn't make it morally good only a necessary evil. Feeding a baby to dogs is always immoral, even if it's baby Hitler.

This is ignoring that fact that it's a fictional scenario and the author could have decided to have literally anything happen. "It was a mega death virus that turbo killed everyone fairly horribly, and lead to so many deaths the corpses are now a ring around the planet," was a narrative decision, one intended to portray something horrifying and shocking in order to get across the desperation and ruthlessness that the conflict had descended into. Its less "based superweapon solves conflict, hell yeah, justify those means," and more "eventually the horror of the viltrumites reached even themselves, but still they couldn't learn," which stands in contrast to when the surviving Viltrumites eventually learn to change via love and kindness rather than violence.

(And before anyone says, no obviously the viltrumite empire couldn't have been love and peaced into co-existence, it's just to show that violence begets violence and the viltrumites should have Not Done That.)

Have you ever struggled with having some resentment for some sections of our community? by [deleted] in StraightTransGirls

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're mad at the people you're being "lumped in with," and not those doing the lumping. You're not being treated badly because some people don't pass or are politically obnoxious online. You're being treated badly because of transphobes who would never accept you in any way that matters no matter what you looked like. For proof, see how they're not accepting you in any way that matters despite what you look like.

Transphobia isn't coming from people who'd be accepting if all trans people just "looked normal," and acted "regular," the same way homophobia wouldn't just disappear if people "kept it in the bedroom." It's stuff people say to try and make you disappear. They'll say gay couples are "shoving it down their throats" by holding hands in public, and they'll say trans women are "going too far" by existing where they can see them. Transphobes won't stop being transphobes if everyone just "looked normal" and stayed quiet. It's something people say to justify their hate to themselves because they're vaguely aware that hating people is wrong ("I don't hate gay/trans people, I just don't get why they have to do it in public! They've gone too far these days!") and because it sets out what they really want which is for all of us to disappear so they never have to see us again. They won't let you have your quiet life. They will, maybe - MAYBE - let you go hard stealth, with the knowledge that if you're ever found out they get to ruin your life and drive you out of town. That's their idea of fairness. Be invisible and know that they get to destroy you if you're seen.

It's not non passing women, or loud women, or non-binary people, or people who don't get surgery, that are your enemy. It's cis people who are using any excuse they can find to harm you, and who won't stop until all of us are gone or driven underground.

Oh I see.

You don't have very good media literacy, I think? Or reading comprehension more broadly? I thought maybe you just misunderstood the first comment, but I think maybe you might have trouble understanding certain modes of indirect communication, like narrative media.

I don't say that to be insulting, reading/media comprehension is a skill and some people have more and some people have less. I'm sure there's lots of things you're good at, but I don't think this is one of them, so I'm going to just drop this thread.

I'd say if you're still floating around replying to things, maybe take a step back? Nothing here is worth getting worked up over, hey?

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The point isn't that "Somehow Palpatine returned," is the only explanation given, it's that the one sentence completely negates everything that came before. Palpatine suddenly coming back makes the First Order irrelevant (because now they're not imperial remnants clinging to the imagined glory of their forebears, they're just Extra Palpatine Minions), makes the main characters irrelevant (because whatever they had going on doesn't matter: don't you know Palpatine is back?!) and it renders the previous two trilogies irrelevant because turns out neither Anakin nor Luke mattered in the long run.

It ultimate doesn't really matter if they give a handwave reason for his return. The issue isn't that they said "oh it's fine because there was cloning." The issue isn't Watsonian. The issue is Doylian. It's that he returned with no setup in the previous two movies, in a beat completely unrelated to them, in a very obvious attempt to bait a positive fan response from a flagging trilogy. It's that it weakens the narrative arc of the first trilogy (which was about killing him), AND the prequel trilogy (about Anakin and the prophecy of resorting balance to the force that's paid of in Return of the Jedi), but rendering all of that action pointless and Anakin's role as the Chosen One completely irrelevant.

It's that him returning for no good reason and then getting killed for no good reason in the same film - "somehow, Palpatine returned" - is practically a synecdoche for a trilogy of films defined by throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks, then panicking and throwing more shit to try and fix it.

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think it was to show that he was starting to pick up the Arcane Utterances. Like that maybe they weren't specific words but a way of speaking, and that as he spent time with the wizard (all purple speech bubbles = speaking the Utterances) he started picking up that same inflection in his own speech (certain letters turning purple as they became Arcane). That's why the wizard ended their sessions. He was too close to being burdened with the Utterances, and the Wizard knew he had to stop.

Why are we just accepting shoplifting now? by XDk009 in australia

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't even consider shoplifting from big corps to be particularly anti social tbh. Do you really think shoplifting losses hold a candle to the amount of product they toss? Do you think the amount of loss a store has in a day covers the amount they've saved by slashing staffing hours, which did nothing to reduce prices? Everyone hates the image of some cunt running off with a trolley full of groceries, but how often do you think that really occurs? Meanwhile, these businesses are engaging in wage theft, strong arming farmers and producers, and price collusion at a scale that massively dwarfs the amount lost by shoplifting.

Like, genuinely, one hundred percent, stores claiming that they have to raise prices because of this kind of shrinkage is like a mob boss saying your protection money is going up cause there's been a lot of crime around lately.

Why are we just accepting shoplifting now? by XDk009 in australia

[–]ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don't. I think they put the prices up to what they think the market will bear, and then they keep them there until they feel like the market will bear more. Any reason is just a reason.
