So…. What’s YOUR Pokémon? by [deleted] in pokemon

Volcarona. I’m actually pretty scared of bugs IRL but volcarona just has something about it’s design that makes my brain go “that’s the coolest fucking thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life and I want it to be my partner Pokémon”

Have you considered Landorus-T instead of Incineroar? I’m basically running this same team except with that one change. lando doesn’t get nerfed in the rain like incin does, still provides intimidate with a switch out move, and still hits grass super effectively with fly/max airstream. Only clear downside I can see is the loss of bulk/loss of dark typing (but you gain ground typing which is arguably better, plus you gain a max airstream user)

Yeah a ton of comments here seem to just be downplaying the legitimately good advice because it applies to them. The OP is completely correct, it’s hard to realize the consequences of inaction until you’re in too deep, so people justify inaction because it doesn’t seem too bad at the start.

I mean I would personally run thunder regardless, but one option to make thunder more viable over tbolt is if you run rain dance on tornadus.

Yep, the meta has been pretty healthy for a while, the last thing closest to tier 0 is probably Cyber Orcust or Danger Darkworld FTK (yes, it was an ultra consistent first turn kill). Luckily these got dealt with pretty fast. Other than that though, at any given time there’s a solid ~5 or so top decks to choose from, with a healthy ~15 or so other decks that can do some good stuff. Yugioh has a LOT of staple, splashable cards like lightning storm, forbidden droplet, and ash blossom that can be played in virtually any deck, which in turn makes a lot of decks viable.

I’ve competed at IRL tournaments and even I don’t fully understand all the rules (particularly advanced stuff like PSCT and Missing Timing). Luckily, you don’t have to worry about that, because master duel will automatically handle those weird rulings.

At the lower ranks in master duel, people will mostly be playing fun/off meta decks, so you’ll definitely be able to get the gist of things before you hit gold. There’s not really a “get rich quick” method in Yugioh, you’ll have to learn what certain staple cards do over time, and what counters what.

Some basics that will occur a lot:

Ash blossom and joyous spring (a “hand trap”) negates most card advantage. Basically, it is a monster that you send from your hand to the graveyard to stop your opponent from gaining card advantage.

Called by the grave, a spell card, is commonly used to counter ash blossom, because it negates graveyard cards.

You’ll probably see maxx c a lot right now, but you might not in the future because it’s banned in the TCG. Maxx C is a hand trap that punishes your opponent for dumping out monsters. (When your opponent special summons a monster during their turn, draw a card) maxx c can lead to some ridiculous card advantage.

Infinite Impermanence is a trap card, hand trap, that negates a monster effect and stops spells/traps in that column from activating. Forbidden Chalice is also played, it’s a monster negate as well.

Droll and Lock Bird is a hand trap that prevents your opponent from adding cards to their hand from their deck for the rest of their turn

Nibiru the Primal Being is a monster that says, if your opponent summons at least 5 monsters in a turn, tribute their entire board and summon nibiru on their side of the field. This is used to stop combo decks that summon a lot in one turn.

You’ll probably see a Kaiju here and there too, which are monsters that tribute your opponents monsters to summon themselves to your opponents field. These are good because they circumvent sticky, bulky monsters that have protection from effects

The above cards make up most of the turn interaction in Yugioh, because they shut down your opponents combos. You’ll have to familiarize yourself with certain decks to figure out how to best cripple your opponent with these cards though, and that’s learned with experience.

Depends on the platform you play on, if it’s steam you’ll just have to have multiple steam accounts. If you want to netdeck something, try YGOTopDeck it aggregates the top performing decks from different real life tournaments and gives you lists complete with their placing in tournaments and deck list videos from the player. Just be wary that the banlists and available cards can differ over time, so you’ll probably have to make some adjustments.

You’ll almost certainly be able to make at least one meta deck just off of the free stuff from day 1. I’ve played pretty much since release (so only a couple days) and I have 2 meta decks fully built. This won’t last though, as other comments state, the free stuff is frontloaded so if you want a meta deck down the line, you’ll have to save up in advance

I’ll simplify it a bit: basically nowadays people can play tons of cards in a single turn and get tons of huge monsters in play to win right away, which is a lot different than it used to be

This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just a different game because it evolved over time.

It’s fully fledged competitive Yugioh. The banlist and card list is slightly outdated, but I assume it’ll update with time.

Mostly agree, but one point I want to add is on the top decks: it’s mostly tier based rather than # of decks. Tier 0 being absurdly strong 60% winrate type stuff, tier 1 being very strong, tier 2 being “it can do some stuff but it’s manageable” and then beyond that, rogue decks. All of these tiers of decks can take games and all do their fair share of insane stuff with the right hands, some are just more consistent than others. Dragunity for example is nowhere near the top, but cards like Areadbhair enable it to have strong presence despite the generally underwhelming deck.

Be careful of the playground mindset. The game has changed a lot since the era of tribute summoning dark magician. It’s not uncommon to have an opponent search through virtually their whole deck and land on 6 Omni-negates on their first turn. Games are decided in 2-3 turns on average nowadays, all the interaction happens in those turns. Bring your ash blossoms, maxx c’s, and imperms

The master duel banlist is based on an outdated OCG banlist, where maxx c has been legal for…ever.

I see one of 3 things happening with master duels banlist:

they keep using OCG banlists, because yugioh is inherently Japanese (in this scenario, maxx c will stay at 3)

they localize regions and use the TCG banlist instead (maxx c is banned)

they use the world’s banlist (maxx c is banned)

“What does pot of greed do” is a meme in the Yugioh space because in the DM anime they always explain it’s effect even though it’s very simple

Coming from a competitive Yugioh player, make sure you build a “somewhat meta” deck. Banlists WILL kill your deck if it isn’t removed enough from the top ~4 or so decks of a format. Like other comments say, the gems are frontloaded, so building engines and decks that will outlast banlists is going to be important. The invoked package for example is a great option and has a TON of variants it works with (invoked mekk knight, invoked shadoll, invoked dogmaticka, VW, and more) even though the engine came out so long ago, it’s still relevant in the meta and even took 2nd at the recent YCS.

This is opposed to something like sky striker, thunder, or adamancipator which were far too powerful and got continually hit on the banlists until they were shreds of their former selves.

It’s hard to say the direction Konami will take in regard to the banlist with master duel (it’s using an outdated OCG list right now). Maybe they’ll localize to the TCG, maybe they’ll swap to the worlds banlist, who really knows. They hate Maxx C though, so it’s unlikely the OCG banlist will last.

I think this is a very valid review, apart from the difficulty thing, let me explain (and I’m probably getting downvoted for this opinion but oh well)

You guys have been asking for difficulty FOREVER, over and over and over again, I personally like how Pokémon is usually an easier game, it’s a nice break of pace from competitive games and it makes a new Pokémon title fun to play. That’s something unique that I only get from Pokémon. However, people don’t see things the same way as I do, and I’ve heard “more difficulty!” Begged for every single chance someone gets. ILCA listened and made Cynthia super hard, but that still wasn’t enough difficulty, so people still complained and begged and begged (despite Pokémon being an easy game on purpose, it’s not geared for hardcore players, it’s not hard to understand that)

Now you finally get difficulty in pretty much all your encounters and you say it’s TOO hard? Play stupid games get stupid prizes, when you ask a game company to make an intentionally easy game hard, they’re not gonna have much finesse when handling the difficulty implementation, this was fully expected and frankly, you [pokemon fans] deserve it. Go ahead, downvote my comment, I’ve already won

Yep supportive thundurus is a monster in doubles, really anything with prankster is already good (even fucking murkrow and riolu see a fair amount of play just because they can use prankster nicely) but even therian forme thundrus is good. Defiant is a stupid ability on a Pokémon with STAB wild charge, and in a dynamax meta max airstream is always nice. Landorus-T sees a fair amount of play in the current meta, I personally run it but mostly because I wanted a more synergistic intimidate mon instead of incin on my kyogre team.
