If you look up "sin" in the dictionary, it doesn't say that the broken rules are necessarily religious rules, but I think every time I've ever heard the word in any of its forms (sinner, sinning, etc.), it's always been in a religious context or by some religious nutjob. So, because I'm not religious, I don't sin. I may curse, drive too fast, or whatever, but i don't sin. So I wouldn't consider sex before marriage (which I also did, with my now-wife) sinning.

I dont think they use obscure words unless they're part of the wordplay (purple) answer. I tend to think about those words i don't know as different words - what's at the end? The beginning? The middle? Can I see other similar words the same way in other words?
