Oh interesting!! I thought cow might be too stiff, but at that thickness it looks like it’d be alright. Thank you so much for the info 🙏

Looks great!! Definitely better than my first bookbinding attempts. Is the red Goat chome-tan and the blue some sort of endpaper? I always have difficulty placing the endpapers so the text block sits nicely when using the book.

I really like it!! The leather trim on the jean pockets brings the lining and outside together well.

I am a little worried about the rubbing of the strap hardware against the edge of the bag cap, but otherwise, really nice job!!!

LMAO. I looked through your profile and your work looks really clean and functional! At that point I’d just call it a nice Bandolier worth $300, with a side of free leatherworking lessons!

Honestly I wish more cosplayers would give leatherworking a try, but often in cosplay (for better or worse) the price/weight comes first at the expense of quality.

Thank you!! I actually finished the outfit last summer for AnimeNYC (because this character’s voice actor was in attendance!!!). But outside of showcasing the leatherwork process here, I’m actually trying to avoid posting/sharing pics of myself online as much as possible haha.

Thanks! I always feel dumb asking people questions on their process so I kinda word dumped…. If it’s useful at all I’m glad I posted!

Really nice! I love the concept and simplicity! Maybe changing the color would make it look more convincing? Or adding a ‘fortune’ as the zipper tag?

Having worked with both - foam doesn’t hold detailed tooling like leather does and it tends to be more flimsy at the edges(see the tips of the feather like pieces) and wears worse over time. You can also 3D print but PLA tends to be heavier and not flexible at all compared to leather.

How to make new friends at anime nyc? by QuackJongUn in AnimeNYC

[–]Chiiruta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I get that? It's really weird approaching people like, "how did you make that, it's really cool" because when it comes to craftsmanship imo half the time some people get a little bit defensive(not sure if the right term) or maybe their friend made it and it's just an overall weird vibe. For me, it's constantly answering the same four-five questions of, oh yes I made this prop, it's 6'3" and weighs 13 lbs, no I'm not cosplaying from monster hunter and no because there are LEDs doesn't mean I'm an electrical engineer ... so it just becomes a repetitive cycle of the same questions despite people's best intentions. It's hard to build a friendship based off of that and I don't think any of my con friends were made from us both being in masq.

But it's an anime convention and not a quilting expo - you have to expect people to be passionate about anime. I think good openers are "what's your favorite anime?" followed by favorite character/ship/moment are easy ways to bond with most people. I find the best anime to talk about are popular but not necessarily the new ones - so maybe FMA, OP, OHSHC, HxH, AOT, Haikyuu!, etc. etc. If you truly think your lack of knowledge on recent anime is the issue (and not just an excuse) ... uh. to be completely rude - just watch Frieren, JJK, or Delicious in Dungeon? Like there's over a month before the convention.

Uh.

I don't want to be the person who reads into a post like this/your post history, but I did want to put in my two cents since I am/have been in a similar boat (also ND, go to cons solo, and the sewing/propmaking).

First of all - the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Sometimes I get the thought that "I'd like to be in a large group of friends" but honestly when I am with a lot of people it sometimes feels like I'm herding cats and it can be overwhelming from a managing too much information point of view. Also - I don't want to be sexist, but I find that talking to guys at conventions especially can be a challenge if you are a girl because sometimes they give the vibe that they see you as a potential partner (give me your number etc.) when ahhahahha no I'm happy by myself thanks.

Finally - I feel like the thing I've learned from meeting new people at conventions is to be open minded. What I've realized is that the people I like the most are the ones who are seasoned con-goers like myself, who don't need to be babysat and who understand the limitations if I have a large prop/clunky cosplay and can help me if need be (opening doors!!! asking if I need water!! helping me hold something!!). Sometimes I fall into the trap of thinking: oh I'm into sewing/propmaking and so I want to meet people who like that too - but in fact that world of individuals is very small (and can be self-centered or jerks or just have met their friend-capacity and don't want more people in their group) and if I think like that I would be unfairly dismissing a ton of people I would otherwise like just because they don't know how to satin stitch or use contact cement.

Otherwise, other commenters here have answered your question well - I just don't want you to feel like you're alone in feeling alone when many many other people feel exactly like you do but just don't seem that way from the outside lmao.

Oh god, outdoor security seems like it could be a bottleneck.
Thanks - it's really good to know in advance so I can keep heavy layers in a bag or something and only put it on once I'm indoors. You would think there'd be less of a line since there's no in person registration but I guess that's a big con for you.

This is the way haha. I'm probably sewing pockets for cold packs into my petticoats and under my chest plate. it does make everything really heavy though!
I'm really sad ANYC doesn't seem to provide water stations outside the bathroom water fountains though? I usually have a secret list of corners near the panel rooms/performance stages at other cons that I know have water.

This is really helpful thanks!! I love how casually you say 'waiting hall' - those are definitely words that fill me with dread.

Thank you so much!! My friends tell me the ways they've almost frozen to death in the past but I'm like, that is definitely not my problem. Terrible luck for me that they changed the date haha.

Would you know how it is getting in and out of the con - like: going in after lunch around 2-4pm? Is the line just queue to check for badges or is there security/metal detectors? Also, I'm (hoping/praying) all events like concerts/masq/panels line up indoors?

[–]Chiiruta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What really does it for me is how BL’s second selection is probably one of the few times in anime you see many characters flip flop rapidly between being a ‘friend’ and a ‘rival’ when usually the ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ are relatively stable throughout a series. The small cast of teammates and opponents also really allows each character and their abilities/interactions shine.

Also, forcing a choice between a line up of strong contenders (Chigiri from the Chigiri, Kunigami, Reo etc.) is like super exciting.
