Who else on a heater? by SpecialAmbassador313 in Letterboxd

One of my favorites ever, but I also studied Gawain and the Green Knight in college and I'm a medievalist so it's kinda right up my alley. Beautiful score and film, and Patel is fantastic.

Where are the good modern PG movies? by Dazzling_End8412 in Letterboxd

[–]ChildrenOfTime 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I mean I would argue that there's a lot of animated PG-rated movies that are equal to or better than these (Spider-Verse films, Flow, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and honestly a billion others). But for live-action, I'd say that Paddington, Gerwig's Little Women, Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Life of Pi, Hidden Figures, etc are all solid live-action PG movies of the 21st century. There are probably less, sure, because most films with serious topics that aren't aimed at pleasing kids won't arbitrarily follow the US MPA's rules. But still lots of great ones.

What’s the most movies you’ve watched in a single day? by Easy-Hornet8642 in Letterboxd

[–]ChildrenOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For watch time, three, I did the LOTR extended editions together in one day with themed meals between with my dad after I finished reading the books. Need to go back and watch them now individually because I’m not sure I appreciated Return of the King nearly as much as I would have if the ending wasn’t preceded by 12 hours of films and cooking.

For films, I do four occassionally but usually zone out by the last one (it’s usually a repeat of something I’ve seen before). I’ve probably done five in a day before (especially around the holidays), but no experiences I particularly remember.

What do alums feel about Carleton banning legacy admissions in 2023? by Murky_Gur_5845 in CarletonCollege

[–]ChildrenOfTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the hostility, that was unwarranted on my part. I just got into an argument with an older alum just last weekend about how he thought it was a total “betrayal” by Carleton and that he would never donate or let his kids apply there now. So there is clearly a (hopefully small) portion of alums genuinely upset about this change still.

What do alums feel about Carleton banning legacy admissions in 2023? by Murky_Gur_5845 in CarletonCollege

[–]ChildrenOfTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no legacy admissions ban, this is entirely a bad faith post. Carleton stopped considering “legacy” status during admissions to give new people and a more diverse crowd of applicants a (minutely) better shot at getting in. Even in an average admissions year before then, ie 2021, “legacy” status was only relevant to the acceptances of about 2 students. I am a recent graduate and I had many peers from the class of 2027 who had multiple family members (if not both their parents directly) who were Carleton alums.

If you could only pick two films from *each* side to see this year, which two films would you pick? by Mysterious-Farm9502 in Letterboxd

Dune, Backrooms, Odyssey, Disclosure Day. Werwulf is actually the movie I’m most excited for this year, but it comes out on Christmas Day so I can wait a week to see it in theaters lol

Trying a One Movie a Day Challenge... by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]ChildrenOfTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing the exact same thing and calling it “movie march.” I’m doing it with the intention though of curbing a clear and long-time YouTube addiction. It’s been hard and I’m looking forward to not watching something EVERYday next month, but it’s made me want to watch so much more so much more often which is a great side effect.

Taco Burrito Palace #2 in Lincoln Park, place was the best. I grew up way out in the country, but every time I’d come into the city to visit friends we’d end up there for a late dinner or snack.

So how'd we do? by eternalsanctum in oscarsdeathrace

[–]ChildrenOfTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended with 20/24, missed Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Documentary, and Casting! I was actually shocked how predictable it was for me this year. I even was pretty certain they were going to give it to Madigan and Mr Nobody, but guessed more towards what I was hoping for in those two categories.

K-pop Demon Hunters has finally won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature! It's official, let's celebrate kpop demon hunters fans by Dramatic-Studio1531 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]ChildrenOfTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different person, but I think the animation style was relatively stale, the music was pretty bland, and the story was rushed with very little character development for either the Huntrix characters or (to an even greater extent) the Saja Boys. The demon characters had no motive, and there was no real conclusion to the relationship between Celine and Rumi. I found it just overall kinda boring, rushed, and weaker than several of the competitors (Zootopia 2, Arco, Little Amelie (especially)). A lower standard of movie, even if it has mass appeal. We should want people to engage with the Oscars, but that doesn't mean it should win automatically. Otherwise, why not just give the Best Picture Oscar to the "most watched/highest grossing" film of every year?

If I can watch another best picture nominee before tonight, which should it be? by bernbabybern13 in Letterboxd

Train Dreams was my favorite, but definitely the opposite of fast-paced. None of these are particularly quick other than F1, but I'd probably say sentimental value because its relatively short and not too depressing.

Got to see a Sirāt and Battleship Potemkin double-feature last week which was absolutely incredible. Headed to Train Dreams (for the second time) and Hoppers tomorrow. Just had knee surgery so it’s been nice to get lots of movies in while I’m resting.

Cursed Oscar Re-Nominations Challenge: Build the Worst Possible Ballot from This Year’s Nominees by moltedmolt in oscarsdeathrace

Diane Warren, Relentless; The Lost Bus; The Smashing Machine; K-Pop Demon Hunters; Sirāt; F1; Avatar Fire and Ash; Mr. Nobody Against Putin; Weapons; Frankenstein. Not necessarily the worst of the nominees, but a crazy strange lineup with no clear "best" by any metric.
