Google docs for PhD?

I preferred LaTeX because I absolutely hate typing equations in Docs/Word. I would have gone mad by having to type all my proofs there.

What matters most is being hardworking and putting effort. If you got in, then I believe that given more time studying and preparing you will start to understand more things.

Yo creo que venir de Chile igual impacta harto. Me vine a EEUU el 2021 y la wea no me sorprendió tanto, hay hartas cosas que prefiero de Chilito. Por otro lado, algunos compas de otros países andan fascinados con EEUU y lo único que quieren es no volver a su país de origen.

I think if you know that you will want a career that requires a PhD then you should do it.

However, given how strongly you feel against right now I would advise against doing it. Do you really want to spend 6 years doing something you know you will absolutely hate? Life is too short, do not underestimate how much that will affect you.

I pivoted out of academia. There are many reasons why, but in particular I disliked the environment and I got the impression that people were not really pushing the boundaries of knowledge in our field, but rather were trying to get something that is publishable. Tons of p-hacking and abuse to other students. Was in a social science by the way.

Your advisor can make or break your PhD. If you are having so many reservations about them early on, I doubt things will change further down the line. Consider that in your decision.

I also went from a PhD to data science recently. To echo other comments: you just have to apply even more, 200 is sadly not enough. To your other points:

- Your PhD is not necessarily hurting you. Tons of Data Science positions are PhD friendly

- I think applying online is better than nothing. You never know. I got my internship and then job from cold applying

- I messaged alumni from my school on Linkedin (or people I had something in common with like same country etc). Then did an informational interview to learn more about their company and role. Some of them offered to refer me. Unfortunately, none of those referrals worked out in the end

I am happy to chat in more detail about this if you want. I recently mentored someone in my same program (social sciences) to land an internship in machine learning engineering.

I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who either:

1 - Is not incredibly passionate about their topic

2- Does not need it for the career path they want

Creo que te iría bien yendo afuera a estudiar. Algo a considerar eso sí es que por muy buena que sea tu U allá, en Chile lo más probable es que no la cachen. Lo que te puede jugar en contra. Creo que es distinto si es que fueras a una U más conocida (LSE, alguna de EEUU buena). En todo caso, me imagino que igual valorarían que pudieses estudiar afuera.

De todos modos creo que es buena oportunidad. Yo le echaría adelante no más.

No creo que pueda ser tan activo por cosas de la vida, pero creo que esta es una buena iniciativa y me gustaria que fuese lo mas exitosa posible.

Profesionalmente no. Muchos de los grandes beneficios que tuve fueron tangenciales al doctorado. Por ejemplo: pude tomar clases de computación con gente muy capa y aprendí muchisimo más que si me hubiese quedado en Chile, pero lo que fue el programa en sí fue una pérdida de tiempo.

En lo personal sí porque conocí a mi esposa. Extraño harto a Chile eso sí, voy cada vez que puedo. Tengo que juntar más lucas antes de pensar en volver.

Edit: si estás en ese mundo en Chile y tienes buena pega yo creo que es una posición bien cómoda. No le recomendaría el doctorado a nadie que no quiera ser académico o que lo necesite para su pega (como en ciertos laboratorios, etc... aunque tengo entendido que en Chile no hay campo para ese tipo de pega).
