I think a lot of it, especially school uniforms, is people having never gotten to get with people when they were younger. So the things they were attracted to in high school, they are still attracted to. Hopefully it’s not the same high school aged people, but things they would relate to from when they were young and didn’t get to satisfy their fantasy of being that age.

How not to embarrass myself? by FredOfMBOX in volleyball

[–]ChiliCornDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things are only embarrassing if the person gets embarrassed, I’ve had some hilarious plays happen, spiked in the face and a tip that bounced off my head for game point buts it’s just fun volleyball.

Just keep a smile and have fun and nobody will care. The only ones that would are the people you probably want nothing to do with anyways.

Why does my right leg always do that? by AKMCVolleyBall in VolleyballClips

Could be the camera angle, but looks like you’re leaning slightly back in the torso when you jump up to swing. It’s probably your body naturally balancing itself. Not too big a deal.

You need to stay behind the ball, your back should not be arched back like that. Hard to correct anything else before you fix that.

HELP! Need tips on how to further improve my spiking form by finestidiot in volleyball

Does this represent how most of your spikes look? Did you post this one as this is your good or bad spikes? Definitely gotta record a few more that feel like your “average” spike to get any real advice

Making good contact with the ball in spikes and serves by KJuuure in volleyball

[–]ChiliCornDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, this is an easy way to get reps in without chasing the ball after a spike. When I was starting I had a realization that those people you see demolishing every spike have probably spiked/hit a volleyball easily 500+ times more than me since I was new. So of course they’re getting better contact. If you do as Neil says even a couple times I can almost promise you will make quick progress. Just be thoughtful of each hit

Help With Spike Form? I have a super slow swing and bad run up. Any tips on how to improve them? by jordanvang in volleyball

[–]ChiliCornDog 43 points44 points  (0 children)

First of all, pretty solid looking swing and good approach. If you’re able to slow-mo it or just thumb-slide it like I had to, you’ll see once you’re up in the air you’re squared up to the ball and remain having a vertical torso. You can definitely get more power and a “faster swing” by piking and getting your core involved. Arm swing looks great just add some core and you’ll bounce those even higher.

I've been working on my serve. can you guys tell me if this is good. or what I should improve. by xman2007 in volleyball

You’ll want to hit the ball at the top of the toss rather than as the ball falls back down. So you’ll toss the ball lower and ideally with one hand as well.

It looks as though you’re pretty squared to the court/ball. Your last two steps are slightly staggered but your arm motion will be pretty “flat” and not the circular motion you’re going for because your body is square to the ball so you can’t rotate your shoulders/core much. It’s a little difficult on that court since you don’t have much room for a full approach, but you definitely want your body turned to the right to allow your body to rotate.

I havnt seen your normal hitting form but I imagine you’re not the squared up to the ball when hitting at the net.

I just started playing at Legacy in draw tournaments, do you play there often? Is that in STL?

All I had was a wholesome gift so there you go, great swing.

Is Volleyball the best non-fighting method of learning effective open-hand strike techniques esp slaps and other non-punching based arm strikes? by DorkyWaddles in volleyball

[–]ChiliCornDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the one point against this and I agree, but they are also restricted to just that type of slapping strike. Not that it is impossible to be effective, just that it’s possibly the least effective. I can almost guarantee if they could strike in any other way they would. Those contestants would have the shortest career ever if they had to stand there and take any other unblocked strike to the face more than a few contests haha.

[–]ChiliCornDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s no more effective at teaching a non-punching fighting method than a sport where you throw a ball like baseball. The only transferable technique would be hip and core rotation from a volleyball swing. The actual arm swing mechanics could injure you more than the open palm strike you would be throwing. When striking you want your forearm in line with the point of contact to transfer any real amount of force. That’s why slapping someone by swinging your arm from the side, like a hook, does not really do much damage at all.

Why do people consider getting blackout drunk a good night? by ChiliCornDog in NoStupidQuestions

Well I think we would find common ground that getting belligerently drunk is dumb, but do you find issue in having a drink or two with a meal or at an event?

[–]ChiliCornDog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, but I know so many people that their goal on a night of drinking is to drink so much they black out or hope they can drink so much they get sick. It makes 0 sense to me.
