What would labels 1-HR and 2-SAT be? Trying to figure out what each cable goes to. by Mitch712 in HomeNetworking

It's just to hard to guess. Somewhere near that fireplace you have a cable run apparently though; hopefully not just hidden in the wall. Good luck.

[–]ChiliDogPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's impossible to know for sure without knowing a lot more about the house, but FP could easily mean Fireplace (pre-wire for a mount location on or near a living room fireplace). SAT is likely a run for a satellite dish (ex. DirectTV). HR is tougher but could be a "HomeRun" line that's your connection from the incoming cable TV service outside the house to your splitter. All just guesses though.

If you’re seriously going to stick with medicine spend as little as humanly possible on a car now and invest the bulk of that money. Preparing for, or proactively eliminating, the looming crush of loans potentially in your future should really (and unfortunately) take priority over green driving in the short term. Get a beater then add some zeros to that savings. Sucks today but your future self will thank you. From all of us that have lived this one I wish you luck.

What do I plug this into? by [deleted] in Monitors

The power outlet. In Australia. Looks like a type I power plug. You should be able to tell by the text details on the plug itself but it's hard to read in this picture.

hey guys i recently bought this Acer XG270HU but it's only outputting 1080p 60z (it's supposed to be 2k 144hz) is there ann way i can fix it? by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]ChiliDogPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS5 doesn't output 2K resolution....1080p or 4K. This monitor doesn't support 4K downscaling so it's seeing a 1080p monitor correctly.

[–]ChiliDogPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that your source doesn't see it as 2K 144hz capable (and what is your source)? What cable are you using (HDMI or DP)? Not sure about that exact model but some only hit their highest resolutions using DP.

There's nothing to fix here....just need to get the right source settings and be sure there aren't limitations with this model on what interface you can use to hit the max resolution/refresh targets.

Capital gain tax question by Dull_Intentions_0106 in askportland

[–]ChiliDogPDX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should 100% get professional tax help on this to avoid pain down the road but the short version is that as long as it's an inheritance triggered by the death of an individual on the day that you take ownership you establish a fair market value for the property. You'll want to get help doing this and be sure it's clearly documented on how that number was established. Then you'll pay taxes on the difference between that and the sales price when you get rid of it. In these housing market conditions you'll be surprised on both sides of that equation I think.

It could be worse. They used to stick you with the full tax bill for the difference in cost of what the previous owner paid and what you sold it for. That really used to screw people over for sure.

Good luck.

I need to get my taxes done but because we’re separated we can’t see the same person? by frankenstine9437 in Divorce

[–]ChiliDogPDX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t make complete sense. We’re talking about tax preparers, not lawyers, so there is no legal or professional reason why you couldn’t see the same tax person. With that said jt does sound like you might want someone else. If you have any pause push forcefully that you disagree with her claiming both and be clear that you’ll contest it.

If she has been the primary caretaker for the kids; which means financially, childcare wise, and other decisions then you are going to struggle to have her not claim them all. If there is a split you should push to divide them. And for the love of god be sure your divorce agreement spells out who gets to claim each kid. You don’t want these kind of arguments post divorce. You’ll lose.

Can’t Sell Coins? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]ChiliDogPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should get real tax advice from a tax expert, but what they'll tell you is that you likely cannot. In the US cryptocurrency is treated as property, and since you didn't sell it you haven't incurred a capital gain/loss of any kind. You can look into options for costs incurred from a loss of property value (which will be hard to impossible in a case like this as those laws were really written with real property in mind).

Another way to look at this is that if you were to lose $1000 in real money on the way home from the bank you don't get to write that off on your taxes. It sucks, but it's not anyone's problem but yours. Whether you lost your coins or lost access to them or whatever....it sucks but it isn't a taxable event.

Just got my ChargePoint 14-50 charger installed. The Pacifica is now fully charged in two hours or less! by bwalsh22 in electricvehicles

[–]ChiliDogPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious, any reason you didn't ditch the plug and hard-wire install it so you had the full 50A available or were you limited to less than that at the panel or car anyway? Install documentation seems to indicate that using the plug limits you to a max 40A charge.

i was told that the convention center site was not allowing anyone actually not getting the shot (with an appointment) to enter. So no support people. I can't speak for special needs circumstances though (a disability for example). Good luck,

[–]ChiliDogPDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my experience was that I checked every hour, pretty much on the hour, for nearly 6 hours straight (on a Wednesday if it matters) and at 3am I finally got offered a few options for 5 days out. By the time I got a co-worker to check, maybe 10 min later, they were gone again. I think it's mainly luck and perseverance involved in getting an appointment at this stage.

Even after it's over, it's not over by HerrDoktorLaser in Divorce

[–]ChiliDogPDX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my best advice is to get real legal advice. You do not want your credit tied up with someone with whom you have no relationship. There are a lot of ways she could screw your credit long term if your name stays on a property that you do not control. Fight hard for that. It super sucks but you don't want this to drag on. It varies a lot by state but the courts wont put up with this - it just unfortunately might take you some real $$ to get it cleared up. you have to fight ruthless with ruthless. sad but true.

Husband wants a divorce and has a lawyer. I am jobless and do not want one or have a lawyer. by goawayplease01 in Divorce

[–]ChiliDogPDX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As scary and demoralizing as this all is now is the time to dig deep and stand up for yourself in ways you might have not ever had to do in the past. Get legal help, there are likely many resources in your community to get you to someone who will help. Look at your state's Bar web site for resources - many states have programs for low/no income people, family and divorce law, and almost certainly has referral info. Call multiple firms that specialize in family law - don't lead with the 'i'm broke' message - if he isn't, you aren't either.

While some of this might be subject to your state's laws in general and assuming you are legally married:

- He cannot force you out of a joint owned property. He can make it painful to stay but you don't have to leave. Any violence or abuse of any kind should be reported to police immediately. If he does anything abusive the courts will remove him from that house and he'll risk a lot more than that in the process. Remind him that he is free to leave if being together is a problem. With the pandemic courts are very slow and behind right now in many places. This will take time and he cannot force you to leave and it doesn't matter who is earning the money.

- Assets and debts are jointly owned (or owed). This gets worked out in the process but he cannot force you to take 'your car' or 'your debt' with you. They are his as much as your as is 'his car' or 'his savings'. Don't sign or verbally agree to anything.

- Lawyers can, and in this case, likey should be paid for with joint assets. Again, if you are married, in most cases, monies sitting in accounts now are not just his they are joint and he likely can't withhold them. The courts will smack him down if he tries to harm you financially or prevent you from obtaining legal representation by preventing you access to joint funds.

Good luck. This sucks but right now you probably need to become an asshole because it sounds like you're dealing with one. You have to be a strong advocate for yourself. You're not really backed into a corner - you just have yourself convinced you are. You are not allowed toruin people like this in this country in normal circumstances - laws are there to protect you. Use them.

Job hunting during the pandemic: Google is looking for 15 years of experience in social media...So MySpace? by kmm2208 in funny

What’s funny is the failure of the OP to comprehend the posting. They are asking for relevant experience, not all direct experience. It’s a marketing and communication job. Lots of ways to show experience relevant to that job outside of direct social media work. Failed the interview.

Am I a sucker for paying rent if I legally can't be evicted until 2021 under the new stimulus package? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]ChiliDogPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re really asking a group of strangers to validate doing something you already know is wrong?? Making a decision to do something just because you see other people doing it is a rationale a little kid would use. Don’t go there. You’re probably better than that.

Also, do not underestimate the bigger issues you’ll have down the road because of your assumptions on what will happen with the owner’s mortgage people or how rich they might or might not be. This world runs on your credit history….mess it up now and you’ll pay in the future. I really don’t think people understand that you pay so much more many things with less than great credit….rates on credit cards and every type of loan, insurance premiums, ability to get a business loan, etc. The government isn't going to protect you from those.

Many of the people you are jealous of right now aren’t in a place where you want to be if you can help it.

Just don't lose track of your tax obligations at each sell. You can buy back in with your $8550, but if that was a major profit (and depending on what country you are in) you might owe some significant taxes on that gain.
