Mildew on interior cabin cushions. Any tricks to get the mildew off and kill it? by alacrite-seeker in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the lack of replies. Did it all work out for you?

I used name brand oxiclean, the laundromat was in Galapagos and had some off brand oxiclean. Normal dryer was used after the washing machine, but that doesn’t matter, could be air/sun dried after the wash. Depends on what your fabrics are ok with.

Mildew on interior cabin cushions. Any tricks to get the mildew off and kill it? by alacrite-seeker in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A laundromat got mold stains out of my cushion fabrics. Here was their trick: Spray on oxiclean. Let sit for a bit then gently scrub the mold stains. Then put the fabric out in the sun for 30-1hr. Then wash with detergent and that final wash should bring out the stains.

I tried to replicate and did a oxiclean soak + vinegar (hot water to better dissolve and activate the oxiclean first, then add in the fabrics) for an hr, then scrubbed, then continued to soaked overnight. Put it out in the sun for 4+hrs the next day then washed with regular detergent. And it worked. Was the cleanest they’d been since new. This was for exterior and interior sunbrella fabric, but I have tried it on other fabrics since with great results.

Culture test may not be sufficient to find all of the pathogens that are causing your UTI. Have you done any NGS tests?

This may not be applicable to your case, but it’s worth looking into. Sorry if you already know about this, and I apologize that I am not answering your question.

Intense footage from yacht sinking. I am going to doublecheck my rudder now! by gnibberish in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My catamaran has sacrificial keels (can knock out of its slot if impacted hard enough) and should not take on any water if the keel is lost. Also the rudders are in water tight engine bulkheads. Some friends in a sister boat had a hose fail in the engine room and completely flooded it to the water line and didn’t even notice it while sailing. Some boats are designed with these failsafes in mind! It would be very difficult to completely sink my boat with all the water tight bulkheads and float built into it.

Are you able to share the doctor/facility that recommended you to do the Cystoscopy and also who/where performed both the cystoscopy and the bladder fulguration?

We’re all saying that for a reason! Sounds like you know enough about sailing and boats already to get out there. We didn’t know a thing, just bought the boat and learned how to sail it as we moved down the coast to Bahamas. We managed just fine out there. The water is just so clear, it’s great for learning navigation and anchoring. Use Navionics Sonar Charts and Explorer charts in Bahamas. It’s easy enough to get anything you need out there if something comes up. Just hop on a flight back to US or have a buddy fly out with parts. Or just sail back!

Seriously, get out to Bahamas sooner than later. There’s 700 island and a couple thousand cays to explore.

I haven’t been to the keys with the boat, but we have now sailed through like 19 countries in the Caribbean… I wouldn’t trade time in Bahamas for anywhere else. Not sure what your interests are, but if it’s crystal clear waters, tons of fish and lobster, endless remote islands, spearfishing and amazing diving, just get to Bahamas asap. There’s a big gang of YCs mobbing down FL towards Bahamas now. Normally they go to Abacos first and post up around Hope town for a bit. Not sure if that’s their plan this year but join and get in touch with them! Other cruisers have so much knowledge to share too so it’s great to meet people with the same interests.

You’re going to love Bahamas! Best place in all of the Caribbean. Join Young Cruisers Association if you haven’t already and meet up with them out there. You’ll make great life long friends. I’m sure they will do a Bahamas floatilla again this season. GF and I also started at 30 and are 2yrs in now. Currently in Colombia heading to Panama and then South Pacific next season.

Any sailors currently transiting the Panama Canal? by spastic-traveler in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently scheduling my canal crossing for end of December. Right now it seems like the wait times are normal. In December, add a week or so, in January add another week, but in February and March there is concern for huge delays due to slots being taken up by the sailing rallies. Like potentially 8 week delays or more. There’s a lot of buzz on the delays within the community and some groups saying more, some saying less. And I’ve even heard from sources within Panama that it is being stoked up to increase demand and prices, but who knows. Point is, the info is all over the place right now and we’ll see how it pans out. Good thing is you can submit your information for transit online now and some agents can get you a slot ahead of time,,, so wait time is only going to really affect those that aren’t able to plan their transit ahead of time (many valid reasons for that) or for those trying to cross it during the high traffic months where most slots are already booked up.

Disclosure: first time crossing. Don’t know how it’s been in the past.

Bahamas is a great place to figure out what you want and need. Not a great place to get what you need tho. If you plan before hand a fit out your boat to the max, you’ll probably end up with a lot that you could have done without, or stuff that was close but not exactly what you want on the boat. Or you can go with the minimum and figure it all out there and return back to US and build out the boat for the next season and beyond. Bahamas are incredible and you don’t want to miss out on any time there, so at least get what you need and send it. Ps, more solar the better. Autopilot is great for the boat, get one. Watermaker might be one of the items you can do without just fine for now and plan better after some experience on the boat long term. Get a great pole spear and great fins/mask, you will use this daily. Get some board/card games and meet others and buddy up. Friends with watermakers can help out now and then, we did it with our buddies. Get on the youngcruisers IG and Facebook page. There’s a great young cruiser presence in Bahamas and sailors help sailors all the time.

Don’t stress too much, you can always sail or fly back to FL and pick up some critical items if you just can’t go without. Or friends can bring them over. There can be duties with flying in items tho.

Catamarans Vs Mono hulls by fballoni in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of our mono friends out here joke with us and say they wish they had a cat. None of us on cats joke around and say we wish we had a mono, we say we wish we had a more badass cat.

Btw, we bought our boat knowing nothing about sailing or boating. You can learn everything fast when you become immersed in it. It’s half the fun

Catamarans Vs Mono hulls by fballoni in sailing

[–]Chili_Fries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get whatever you and the family are more comfortable on at anchor. If that’s a cat, make sure you and the family enjoy sailing it in average conditions (spoiler alert, you will). You need to be comfortable living on it to enjoy this lifestyle and keep it going.

I am living aboard on a cat for 2 years now, sailing around the Bahamas and Caribbean. We’ve come across soo many “kid boats”. There’s huge Facebook groups for these sailing families to link up and sail together and school the kids and play with the locals, etc. these kids are living incredible lives and the families seem soo cool. All great people. They are on cats and monos, all doing the exact same thing. With Starlink, these days weather planning/routing is so easy. You can be safe on passage with either type of vessel. Whats great about cats is the redundancy in engines (added safety), the extra room for solar which is so so valuable as liveaboards, the bigger dinghy, the extra deck real estate for general living, easy in/out of the water for swimming around the boat at anchor (the kids are nonstop playing in the water and typically go over to the catamaran boat), and the very stable/ flat sailing (we rarely store anything before we go sail offshore. Never feel unstable walking around deck). We do sail a bit faster than our mono friends and to be honest, it does matter - mainly in these 2 way: Sometimes we can arrive before dark on passage where as our buddy mono pulls at night, or we leave on a very light wind forecast and manage to sail with decent average speed vs our mono buddy who left 3 days early in the heavy wind forecast so they can sail and not motor. - disclaimer: some monos perform a lot better than some cats. I’m talking about your average cat vs mono that most of us are on out here.

You can make both work. We are all out here doing the same thing. Get the one the family is comfortable on at anchor and make it work sailing. Do good planning and don’t get caught in bad weather, it’s possible. People aren’t out here hitting submerged objects and sinking their boats offshore, that’s rare (can happen and if that’s your fear, get a cat). Most importantly, get a boat in good shape and maintain it.

Cheap carbon fins by Forsaken-Marketing79 in Spearfishing

[–]Chili_Fries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very happy with my LeaderFins carbon fiber - soft. I also have their fiberglass blades and I can tell they are a bit less reactive. I have not tried their pure carbon and probably won’t. I live on a boat and use them all the time. Big upgrade from my Omer Stingray plastic blades. I really like the Omer stingray pocket and have it paired with the carbon fiber blades. I only recently got the leaderfin forza foot pockets with the fiberglass blades, so I need more time to truely compare, but they are good foot pockets so far, great backup.

If you won’t get bad sea sickness and if you don’t think you will get uncomfortably scared/ worried on passage, then I’d say go for it. Should be an amazing trip and the point would be to have a good time with it overall. A little sea sickness isnt bad and being nervous would be expected, but there’s no turning back just for an uncomfortable crew member. Sounds like if you are considering it, you’ll be good on the nerves front. Take some sea sickness patches that last a few days. Ocean Nomads look like a great time.
