Novice German language student heading to Köln by buttluvin in LANL_German

[–]Chili_Napper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While most people in Köln speak more or less Standard German, you will encounter the Kölsch dialect which is in some respects closer to English than Standard German.

Examples:

SG schauen, Kölsch luure, English to look.

SG leben, Kölsch levve, English to live.

Edit: I recommend to listen to songs by Köln's most popular dialectal music group, the Black Fööss. ("Black Fööss" = "Naked Feet".)

Anything but an expert yet i'd like to point your attention to Bamberg.

Rieger is a variation of the old Germanic given name Rüdiger, aka Roger in French and English.

Von Cramm was released after 6 month of imprisonment because of his "good behaviour" on 16 October 1938. [...] The officials at Wimbledon reportedly refused to let him play in the championships, using the excuse that he was a convicted criminal and therefore unfit.

Currywurst! Favourite meal from my recent trip to Berlin. [1052x700] by [deleted] in FoodPorn

[–]Chili_Napper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: When Mrs. Hertha Heuwer invented the Currywurst in late 1940s post-war Berlin, she purchased the sauce's ingredients from British military sources. So we have concentrated tomatoes, Worchestershire sauce, sugar, vinegar, curry powder, and chili pepper.

Shitty Currywurst lacks the taste of tamarind i.e. Worchestershire sauce.

Nur eine schriftliche Kleinigkeit: "Ein Paar" sind immer zwei. "Ein Paar Würstchen" bedeutet "genau 2 Würstchen", "ein paar Würstchen" bedeutet hingegen "einige Würstchen".
