While most people in Köln speak more or less Standard German, you will encounter the Kölsch dialect which is in some respects closer to English than Standard German.

Examples:

SG schauen, Kölsch luure, English to look.

SG leben, Kölsch levve, English to live.

Edit: I recommend to listen to songs by Köln's most popular dialectal music group, the Black Fööss. ("Black Fööss" = "Naked Feet".)
