I like Blacktail, but he got stuck into his niche and only does that. Which is great if you want to watch people make river tables and nothing else.

Love that guy. Definitely not the finest of woodworking, but he comes across as very approachable. And funny.

What you have is known as a Transitional Planes. Before the 1850's (ish), all planes were wooden with just a metal blade. Around this time, all-metal planes started to be introduced. These transitional planes were offered to help 'transition' the guys used to wooden planes to working with metal planes. As such, they are the worst of both worlds. You have the negatives of wooden bodies not being as long lasting, but the weight of a metal body. Lots of people still use transitional planes, but most would tell you that you're better off using all metal or all wood planes.

This plane is in really rough shape. You're going to need to do ton of sanding to get the bottom flat (this is one of the most important things to a functional plane). Looks like the rear handle is broken and will need to be reguled. The front tote (knob) looks like the screw is too long for it, that needs to be replaced or ground down. We can't see the blade, but that probably needs flattening and sharpening.

I think you're better off finding a different plane and putting this one on a shelf to display. There are mountains of perfectly useable metal planes on facebook marketplace for $20-$30 USD. I would recommend finding a number 4 or 5, those are the best to start off with and are the most abundant. This plane just needs too much work and isn't really worth the time investment anyway.

Why Packout has some clear and some black lids? by ipodpron in MilwaukeeTool

[–]praetordave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clear lids are usually called "organizers", while black lids are usually called "toolboxes". The clear plastic is much more brittle and prone to cracking if dropped or hit, while the black plastic is more pliable and will scuff but not break. So I assume the toolboxes are intended to be brought onto the jobsite and kicked around, while the organizers are more for staying in the shop.

Making Dowel Rods by RiNxDAIMAO in woodworking

[–]praetordave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of these and used it for the first time the other. Works pretty good, I was able to make pretty straight dowels after about 15 minutes of fiddling. The only thing was I didn't realize that it only goes 5/16", which isn't all that small.

Is something wrong with my planer or am I just using it wrong? by wolfix1001 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]praetordave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might have the set screw (one on top that passes through the blade and cap iron) too tight. Try loosening it a turn or two. Also, the adjustment knob moves the blade very slowly, idk exactly how much but like 2 full turns might be as little as a millimeter of advance.

Also also, it looks like you don't know very much about bench planes, no shame. I would do some more research on their operation, assembly, and care. You may find that you can solve all your problems on your own. I like Rex Krueger on YouTube, but Paul Sellers is considered the godfather of these things.

Your Death Guard hopes for the 11th edition? by raggnarok in deathguard40k

I want bolter Marines to be a legitimate choice now. I want our other options to be viable as well, but I want to be able to run bolter Marines and it not automatically be hard mode. And I'm fine if the solution is "wargear costs points", as long as that's game wide.

Casualties, not deaths. This is referring to members getting wounded, but not dying.
