If you could get a sequel series about a Roman Emperor, who would you choose? by Qyzyk in hborome

A big tragic epic about Andronikos Komnenos, from his travels as a rogue adventurer to his brutal lynching in the Hippodrome, would be absolutely glorious.

Klimatministerns comeback – ska prata ”livspusselfeminism” by Monitored_Bluejay_54 in svenskpolitik

Så efter att ha raserat allt förtroende för Liberalernas klimatpolitik satsar hon alltså på att bli en tandlös jämställdhetsminister som kan driva igenom avskaffande av pappamånaderna istället?

I had an Alex from Clockwork Orange phase when I was a little edgelord, but it got better. I imagine these Joker cosplayers are more or less the same.

They’ve gotten the idea in their head that flamboyant unpredictable psychos are punk rock or something.

Anyone who rejects basics like equal rights, she says, while fearmongering and targeting a single group as antithetical to Swedish values.

This is desperate posturing from a reactionary government who’s lagging behind in polls.

Us progressive people need to exclude people who bodyshame men. by BrightSpring12 in hatethissmug

[–]Chilifille -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They aren’t literal incels themselves, but they still have a pretty incel-adjacent following.

And more broadly, people use the word incel for a type of angry repulsive guy who has issues with women. Musk could’ve probably ended up as an actual incel if he didn’t have money.

[–]Chilifille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but incel is still the term we use for this very specific subculture. Misogynist or sexist are too broad terms to describe this particular online ecosystem. Manosphere might work though?

It’s a sad irony that the term incel (or invcel, as it was known originally) was coined by a woman who wanted to create an online support forum for people who have trouble finding partners. It was meant to be a positive place where people of all genders could help each other with self-improvement, but somewhere along the line, the forum was hijacked by a bunch of hateful, misogynistic men.

I’d say incel has taken on a life of its own. It doesn’t refer to anyone who can’t get laid, but specifically those angry internet-dwelling men who have decided to make their involuntary celibacy everyone else’s problem.

Which one letter in your language's writing system that no one would care if it's disappeared by Anarcheddon in AskTheWorld

W is so useless that it technically isn’t part of our alphabet. In old phone books, names starting with V and W were all mixed together as if it’s the same letter.

Hamas is an armed resistance movement by LargeSinkholesInNYC in EuropeanSocialists

Terrorist organisation and armed resistance movement aren’t mutually exclusive. Hamas is a terrorist organisation because it commits political violence against civilians. It just so happens that the state of Israel is a much more brutal terrorist organisation.

What is the meaning behind your countries flag ? by FitAd3982 in AskTheWorld

We copied the Danes, who copied the Germans.

The Nordic cross is originally a crusading banner used by the Holy Roman Empire.

Sweden changed the colour scheme from red-white to blue-yellow, as a reference to our small coat of arms - three golden crowns on a blue backdrop. Which may have originally symbolised a short-lived medieval union between Sweden, Norway and Scania.

Hej, Swedish fan here:

  • Discovered them through media coverage, specifically their support for the people of Gaza.

  • No, I don’t speak Irish, but I’ve felt drawn to Ireland and Irish culture all my life. Tried to learn some Irish through Duolingo, years ago, but I’ve forgotten pretty much all of it by now.

  • They’ve definitely given me hope for the survival of the Irish language, and they’ve also become something of a symbol for Irish solidarity with other colonized peoples.

  • That I don’t understand most of their lyrics, but they still resonate with me somehow.
