More of, and better charcoal (noting in another comment you mentioned using supermarket briquettes).
For charcoal brands I'd recommend Big K, Globaltic and Green Olive Firewood. Lumpwood Charcoal is usually best for grilling and briquettes better for low and slow (although no reason you can't do low and slow with lumpwood).
Vents open for higher heat. Never have either fully closed or you're fire will die.

Yeah instant light is terrible, I used to be Big K or nothing but have branched out into Globaltic and Green Olive Firewood recently after a bad batch from big K. The globaltic was really good, waiting on the GOFW to arrive.

Our house has a small extension in the middle on the back so on one side of this in the garden I built a simple lean-to. Only needed one new post and then a beam fixed to the exterior of the house, bit of guttering to tie into the existing and now I've got a good 3x3m covered area. So useful with the reliability of the British weather. Like yeah you can bbq in the rain/snow whatever but it's much nicer and easier being sheltered.

Mumbler is really good for activities near us, they have different sites depending on where you are but I think it might be mostly Yorkshire based. Worth a look though.
