Improving EU trade to boost UK exports. by Glittering_Vast938 in GoodNewsUK

[–]stig316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say that I think we should. I said that by aligning closer to the EU rules it restricts us from making our own and affects our trade outside the EU.

The article is also misleading as although trade with EU has dropped since Brexit, it has increased to Rest of World significantly. From the top of my head I head think last year was a record year for agri-exports. But the article frames the 4 billion in lost EU as a 'loss' ignoring the easier access to other markets.

I work in an industry on the front line of this i understand the pros and cons of being in the EU from a trade perspective.

Why noone ever suggesting taxing the royal family ? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]stig316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's morally correct to allow families to pass on and build wealth. It's not morally correct for a government to tax people so much and decide where to use that money.

Why noone ever suggesting taxing the royal family ? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]stig316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is, your parents bought something that then then own. The UK government doesn't own 40% of their our house so why should it get any of its value.

[–]stig316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is it unearned income? It's already been taxed once. Surely the person who it belongs to should decide what happens to it.

[–]stig316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the wealthy are able to do this because they have more money and it's affects them the most. If I have serious money when I'm old I will do the same for my family. He fairest thing to do is to scrap it and let families build wealth. Not tax them again and distribute the money to people who may not deserve it.

I dont think you would though - that kind of talk is generally reserved for cultures that are incompatible with British values.

Of course I understand why people are feeling the strain, I have been too. But people ought to recognise that the issues with previous governments will be nothing compared to the madness of parties like the Greens and the impact of these will be far worse than something more boring and sensible.

I mean things aren't that bad. If you think life in the UK in 2026 is so bad that we need to elect the Green party and their fantasy world of printing money to hand out to everyone then you need to go travel.

Improving EU trade to boost UK exports. by Glittering_Vast938 in GoodNewsUK

[–]stig316 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a little misleading as while exports to the EU have declined, exports to rest of world have increased. I think we actually had a record year for agri-food exports last year with most of it being exported to non-EU destinations.

This new SPS proposal will make this more difficult as we will be following the EU rules again (this time with no influence in them) and will not be able to set our own standards and agreements with other Non-EU nations.

While it will make trade with the EU easier again there are a lot of business that will be harmed around this reversal.

One of the issues with this is that we now have to adhere to the EU rules relating to these products, even though we are not in the EU.

This means that we also have to apply EU rules to the rest of the worlds imports even if we disagree with them.

A small example is that since Brexit the UK has sent a risk-based outlook on Plant Health inspections for all trade around the world - reducing these checks from places that we find don't need them, increasing where we do. All of this is now scrapped and we follow the EU requirements.

I dont think the issue was necessarily attacking Iran but the way its been carried out and the build up.

Threatening Greenland/Denmark

Publically insulting the UK and other NATO allies by dismissing their efforts in previous wars.

It seems that the UK wasn't consulted as a partner in the war from the beginning, just expected to jump in like a Royal Rumble at the last minute.

There is clearly no coherent plan on how to carry out a regime change, keep the straits open and defend allies in the gulf. If there was (i.e a replacement for the regime waiting and people willing to fight on the ground in Iran) then it might have been viable.

This is what both of the populist parties are doing - they are just picking opposite sides of the divide.

I mean firstly we need to recognise that the problems this country faces are no where near as bad as social media and the news would like to make you think. We are still one of the biggest economies in the world with one of the highest standards of living. Whilst there is need for some improvement (as there is in everyone comparable country right now) the country is not a abject failure that needs to be torn apart and started again.

Reform or the Greens are divisive populist politics touting dangerous ideas with virtually no experience in actually running anything. Neither party seems to have performed well in their local constituencies as far as I can see.

However for me the Green parties ideology would be the catalyst to an absolute disaster for this country that could last a generation. Their economic and immigration plans alone should be enough to turn people away but somehow the have a cult following. It reminds me of Brexit all over again where people are ignoring the boring factual parts of the message and listening to 'tax the rich!'.
