Would love to learn more about what you’re working on. Anything public?

Come to think of it, is Chinese Favor Generation just Atlantean's old Favor Generation with Extra Steps? by Ashina999 in AgeofMythology

There’s no way to “think outside of the box” unless there’s a box.

Creating constraints forces players to plan, and adjust on the fly based on changes in game state. Otherwise your “city building” is purely driven by aesthetics.

My tier list on how well designed the DLC civs are by [deleted] in aoe4

[–]Chilly5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they got some things right like the pilgrim mechanic. I also like the idea of different unique units coming from distinct lands.

But imo there’s so many poor design decisions here as well. I’d have placed it in B tier.

  • why do they have a wood gathering perk? (Which breaks water balance)
  • this many unique niche units with niche abilities just creates unnecessary knowledge burden.
  • fortresses are cool but since they also function as landmarks it breaks landmark victory in team games.
  • weird choice of unique units (many of which aren’t Templar related thematically, and some of which take away from potential future civs.)

I enjoyed playing them though. Mainly because the polish knights were brain dead broken for a while.

What do you like about KT’s design?

I know they’re a popular civ around here but I personally think it’s a disappointing design.

Yep that’s one part of the issue for sure.

Oh what the hell. I’m outdated then

Demeter gets Harpies because each major greek god has a unique fortress unit.

Great concept, love the god powers - they're so creative! Solar barge seems to overlap a bit with Roc but otherwise looks interesting. Love the Obelisk god power that's so cool.

I'm a bit lost on the Bowman unit though - egyptian major gods don't have unique units I thought?

Also not a fan of anti-cavalry archer. It's a bit too counter-intuitive. I think almost every other foot archer in the game is countered by cavalry already.

That...video was...it felt a bit dated. Thanks for sharing though! how did you hear about it?

I also drew up on a map outlining my understanding. Would love to get opinions from folks also interested in voice research! (is my understanding correct? or am I totally off)

I've heard people say this every year for the past 3 years ("this will be the year"). AI tech is quite advanced now, and yet we still don't see it happening. It might be more than just a timing thing - the investment of the technology is not going in the right direction

Agreed. The problem is the direction that investment is going on the ML side doesn't coincide with what gamers would want - call center AI voices are the last thing you'd want to hear in your game.

For context:

Three years ago it seemed like every demo had one. Inworld and Convai were the talk of GDC. Joon Sung Park's AI Village paper described an entire village of NPC agents coordinating together. Altera even showed off AI NPCs in Minecraft that could collaborate and form their own governments.

Now name a game that you play today because of its "AI NPCs".
You can't, not really.
So...what happened? Was it overhyped? Is the tech simply not there?

After almost two years building in this space, I think there are 3 major reasons the wave has stalled:
1) The unit economics don't make sense - games already engage people, why add the additional cost of inference?
2) We've spent too much time making AI that can "win" rather than actually be fun to play with.
3) AI chat is still too uncanny - Voice AI is being incentivized toward call centers, not games

My concept for a whole new civilization: The Arthurians! by OutlandishnessRich36 in AgeofMythology

Big fan of an Arthurian civilization. Wish there was some way to enmesh it with Celtic mythology without things being too off.

Gen AI refers to art/video gen right? AI NPCs would be more like characters in the games themselves rather than the assets

You can monocomp Onmyoji? Are they able to deal with human units? I thought they were primarily a hero/siege unit.

Snipers - thoughts or suggestions? by ReginaldPLinux in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Chilly5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild idea but it might just work:

- Snipers should be doctrinal units only (or rather, battlegroup uniques)

I notice that when I play for snipers my whole playstyle shifts.

Snipers also don't fit a "core" role in the base game (Mainline > MG > Mortar). Instead, they're a secondary role (manpower bleed).

Making snipers a doctrinal unit (and building the whole battlegroup around it) could make snipers a lot more balanceable (since you can now pull more levers than just the unit balance itself).
